I'm new here and I must say i'm so incredibly obsessed with OSC. He is my hero and my insight... i've been reading his books over and over since the publication of Ender's Game...and yeah dumb me just discovered this site....it never occured to me....

Anyway, is there anyone else out there who is so obsessed with OSC's Enderverse that they find them selves naming their children after his characters? heh, well My oldest son's name is John Carby Lewis (we call him Carn) And our new son's name is Peter Aiken Lewis...lol.

well isn't that just dandy. I'm sure Mr. Card will enjoy that he is so popular.

I have always wanted to name a boy if I had one Nikolai, but that was from B.O.S.C. (before osc)

We have met more than one child named "Ender" -- or named Andrew and called Ender -- at book signings. The oldest was a very handsome 16-or-so year old boy who did not seen at all traumatized by his name. The youngest was a baby girl! We'll see how she fairs with it if we meet her again in 16 years.

I don't have any kids yet... I read Ender's Game for the first time when I was about 12 or so and from that day on swore I'd name a boy Andrew and call him Ender. I'm 26 now. I love the nickname Ender but not so fond of Andy and what if he couldn't stand the nickname I wanted him to have?!

Plus - that's a lot to live up to! I figure I'll give the (future) kids some other names and let them make their names into the kind others want to name kids after... ; )

I still think it's a supercool idea, though.

I also love Nikolai, if I ever have another son, there's a very real possibility I would use that as a name. However, I have a habit of taking names out of literature...

I thought my son had escaped that, for the most part, when I named him a fairly rare biblical name (Azriel Jacob) only to find out AFTER he was good and named that Azriel was the cat off the smurfs.

On the other hand, the girls name we had picked out for him was Alia Krystapher (Alia from Dune)

Right now my favorite girls names waiver between Antigone (I think Tig would be a neat nickname) from ancient greek literature, and a true Card name of Chveya (cuz Veya is also very pretty)

I haven't named any children after OSC characters, but my daughter does share her names with a Joss Whedon character and a George R. R. Martin character, respectively.

It's a coincidence! Really! [Smile]

DDDaysh - better than Gargamel! ; )

Posted by hatrkr81 (Member # 9317) on :

Chveya is such a beautiful name...Homecoming has a bunch of really nice names..and you would never be accused of giving your child a dull, common name!

Posted by Swampjedi (Member # 7374) on :

I'd rather be accused of that than be accused of cursing them with a random name - or even worse, a fad name. [Smile]

We joked about naming our daughter Leia because my husband loves StarWars so much. I didn't think she'd be too happy with the stigma though. So we named her Teia and kept the spelling. She's our Princess Teia.

My son's name is Radley. Sometimes we call him Boo. [Smile]

I guess I would rather the random name, because I was named Chris...how original..and always wished for a more unique name. In fact, my first, middle, and last name are all common first names..now that's a curse to me [Wink]

I helped host a math competition for sixth graders last year and there was this one boy whose nametag said "Andy Wiggin". His team was in the top five, too! [Smile]

According to http://ww2.howmanyofme.com/search there are 6 people in the U.S. named Andrew Wiggin...interesting website...you type in your first and last name and it tells you how many other people in the U.S. have your same name according to the census. Apparantly, 1,713 people in the U.S. have my same first and last name, and interestingly enough, I've met 2 of them (not related to me)!

0 people have my same first and last name... Do I not exist? Should I feel special?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Same here. With both my current last name and my old one. And I happen to know that there are at least a couple!

But apparently none of us exist. [Wink]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Apparently my maiden name doesn't exist, either. As in, no one is listed with that last name.

However, 280 of us have my married name.

Posted by Boon (Member # 4646) on :

There are 0 people with either my first or middle name as a first name. (I use my middle name as my first). Jeryl and Rayann are not very popular at all, apparently.

*waves*

I disliked the stigma (and by extension, Star Wars) for most of elementary school. Then I *watched* Star Wars. Then I loved the stigma. And the nicknames. [Smile]

Can you tell us her name? I'm a huge Martin fan, so I'd love to know!

We aren't going to have any kids, but we decided to name our next pet snake Keener. That counts, right? [ROFL] I've always known that if I ever DID end up with kids, though, I'd name them after either OSC characters or George R. R. Martin characters. I particularly like the names Patience, Petra, Ender, Alvin/Al, and Valentine from OSC novels, and from Martin's books, Bran and Sansa.

According to this site, there are no other Melissa Mistrettas (my first and last names). However, I do know that there IS another Melissa Mistretta out there. I've received email that's supposed to go to her, and had lots of people online ask me if I am "THE" Melissa Mistretta. They're referring to a well-known American Saddlebred trainer who shares my name, but who goes by Missy. [Wink]

Edit: Oh, wait! It says there are seven Melissa Mistrettas after all. I guess the page wasn't done loading yet. [Wink] Well, don't that beat all.

Oh, no! He doesn't exist!!

http://ww2.howmanyofme.com/people/Orson_Card/

I'm sure if I'd searched for "Scott Card," I'd get millions.

Maybe not.... apparently there are no people in the country with my son's last name at all... and since I have personally met at least a dozen, somewhere the data doesn't quite work.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Why this site is not more accurate.

Posted by Karmen (Member # 9666) on :

gah! there's over 700,000 Angela entries! Why did I get such a common name?! My newest little sister has an amazing name though, Isabeau Anjeannette. 'cording to the site no one else has it. My mom took it from the movie Ladyhawk, which is also amazing in my humble opinion.

When I eventually have kids I want to name one Julian. Love the legumes!

I feel so unspecial now. 308 people have my exact name. [Frown]

Posted by RunningBear (Member # 8477) on :

I dont exist.

Posted by DDDaysh (Member # 9499) on :

My college roomate and I compared. Only 1500 people shared my first name, and 1300 shared her EXACT name, first and last. We always used to argue, I wanted a more pronounceable name, and she complained that there were too many Jennifers.

Posted by CRash (Member # 7754) on :

Since the data is from 1990, the one occurance of my brother's name must not be his. Matter of fact, I'm not sure I'm one of the two mes the program is aware of.

Posted by DaisyMae (Member # 9722) on :

Princess Leah, do you pronounce your name LEE-UH or LAY-UH? Just curious. We pronounce our daughters name TAY-UH, but other people I've met with names spelled like yours pronounced it LEE-UH.

Posted by Dark as night (Member # 9577) on :

I don't exist either, which is not a surprise. I've never met anyone unrelated to me whose last name was spelled exactly the same way. And I've only met three people who have the same first name as mine.

Posted by DDDaysh (Member # 9499) on :

You've got me curious now Dark

I don't exist either.

There are six of me.

Posted by Dark as night (Member # 9577) on :

DDDaysh, I think according to that website there are 3000 people in US with my same first name. It's just that I haven't met too many of them. [Smile]

Posted by Steev (Member # 6805) on :

That sight got me right. There are only two people in the US that share my first and last name. But as far as naming anyone from the Enderverse, I'd have to ask my future wife what she thinks because I suck at coming up with names.

Posted by DDDaysh (Member # 9499) on :

Ah, so you're more common than I am!

Posted by cmc (Member # 9549) on :

I guess my whole FAMILY doesn't exist... Last name's not in there.

Posted by B34N (Member # 9597) on :

Ha - There are 298,469 of me.

Posted by Dark as night (Member # 9577) on :

Yeah, so common that there's a rather well-known song with my first name as a title! [Smile]

Posted by DDDaysh (Member # 9499) on :

My name was in a the "long" version of a walmart commercial once... heck a LONG time ago it was even a whole country!!!!

I pronounce it LAY-UH. I know a lot of Leah LEE-UHs and some LEEs as well.

Posted by Dark as night (Member # 9577) on :

DDDaysh, now you got ME curious. How long ago are we talking? [Wink]

Princess Leah... I love it. My now 6 year old nephew, whose name incidentally is Luke, couldn't pronounce my name fully when he was a toddler, and called me LAY-UH. It stuck, and he and his brothers still call me that. [Smile]

Posted by Little_Doctor (Member # 6635) on :

Only eight people share my exact name, but over 600,000 share my first.

Posted by DDDaysh (Member # 9499) on :

lol.. so long ago I actually don't know the date on it... Dacia, from what I remember the last time I looked it up, it was near where prussia is now, but I could be wrong. Incidentally, I also recently realized there's apparently a car company in Europe by the same name.

Posted by Dark as night (Member # 9577) on :

Hmm... That is very interesting!

Posted by Princess Leah (Member # 6026) on :

Dark as night, I'm guessing you're a Layla (well known song, sounds like Leah)? I love that name! And that song.

There must be some sort of Luke-Leah togetherness rule. [Smile] Had I been a boy, my parents would have named be Lucas!

Posted by DDDaysh (Member # 9499) on :

Would they have called you Luke or Lucas?

Posted by Dark as night (Member # 9577) on :

You're guessing correctly, Princess Leah. [Wink] I agree about the Luke-Leia rule. By the way, I love the original star wars spelling of the name. And the song! Unplugged version definitely.

Posted by Solo Wing Pixy (Member # 9489) on :

Well apparently there's one of me. =D

Also, if you find that you don't exist on that site, just know that its based on *likelyhood* of the combination of names existing based on census data, but not taken from census data. So if you, like Mr. Card (or Angelina Jolie interestingly enough), have an relatively unique name, it won't have any results except for maybe this:

"While both names you entered were found in our database, neither was common enough to make it likely that someone in the U.S. has that name."

)= And here I was feeling all special as if it *knew* me. It just guessed me.
