I just started reading Brave New World, and I must say it is very good *though I admit kinda hard to understand at first* so I was just wondering what all of you Hatrackers think of this book!!! It reminds me alot of 1984 which is a good thing, yet I was surprised at how the entire society seems to be built around sex with multiple partners (some say not unlike our own society today)... So by all means share your thoughts.

Sexophones, lol. I thought that was unbelievably funny in middle school.
I seem to remember that it's a good book. I haven't read it since I was 14, so I should probably revisit it and figure out what I think of it as an adult.

Had to read it in college, 25 years ago.
Didn't like it then. (probably because it was required reading). Some of the ideas.....well, it would be scary if society actually became that.

It has been quite a few years since I've read this book, but I do remember enjoying it. Although, I was much more intrigued by Controller Mustapha's character and perspective than I was by Bernard's.

It's one of my favorites, actually. But I agree that Bernard isn't an interesting character. He isn't supposed to be. He's the decoy to help you understand the world, until the REAL hero of the book shows up.

I thought it was a very good book. I had to read it in highschool, and I didn't really like it then, but I had to read it again in college, and loved it.
I do like how easy it is to use themes and ideas from Brave New World in essays and papers. There is so much to talk about.

I see Bernard as a paper thin character put there to represent the authors true purpose... I read about him (the author) in the forward, he's kinda...different.

I cannot undersand why it is that one of the characters could not have a religion without whipping himself. Couldn't there be some sort of middle ground between decadance and spiritual self denial?

I must say, I never actually FINISHED a BNW, but from what I did read, and the papers I've read on it, I'm not terribly impressed. The story moved slowly, and seemed to be... what did someone say earlier "thin". It wasn't as obviously unimportant as the story in Starship Troopers, but it had the "beat you over the head with what I think" feel to it. I got bored, since I already knew the ending, and the points, and just quit.
