My daughter is 8. Can anyone suggest a good summer workshop for writing for her? She's about as smart as the average Hatracker would be at her age.

I guess we could put together a Yahoo group for them. I have a 10 year old who would like to write. But I don't know if they are really ready to handle concepts like constructive feedback yet. Either giving or receiving. She can't even handle getting Robbered in Settlers of Catan.

She's still too young, but when she's 11 or 12 she could qualify for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program. Kids qualify (or at least they used to) by taking the SAT & scoring above a certain benchmark for their age.

I attended summer programs for writing when I was 14-16 and it shaped me profoundly as a writer and a person. I can't recommend it highly enough for gifted kids. It was the best experience of my adolescence, academically and socially.

I just browsed their website and they seem to have a variety of programs for different ages...lots more than they had back in the day when I attended. [Smile]

They have a summer distance writing course, although she may be too young for that still...

When she is about twelve or so (or younger if she is really mature), you might look into Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. They have a great month-long program for writers which also includes going to concerts and galleries. It's a great experience.
