Hello! ive been a loyal Card reader for years. this is my first time on his site, and i am really impressed with the writer/reader relationship that Mr. Card has going on here.
ive read the Ender series...too many...times, treason, enchantment, and i just started the homecoming series. my fiance is a truckdriver and has never compleated a book in his life, and no one in my family is a reader....i have so many thoughts and questions about the books. HELP!!! i need someone to talk with!!!!!

My fiance doesn't like to read either,grr. It's nice to come here and have a group of people to discuss OSC about.Ü

id be lying if i said that reading these books havent changed my life and my whole way of thinking about...everything. the other day my fiance and i were talking about something and i said to myself "hmm...what would Bean do?".....i didnt even realize i said it outloud, and he looked at me like i was crazy.....

Welcome. PD said it simply enough. Have a question? Do a quick search to see if someone else has already started a thread. If not, create one. This side is for OSC stuff. The "Books, Films, Food, & Culture" forum is for EVERYTHING else. Some serious stuff, some sensless stuff, etc.

what is the typical age group?? because i started reading OSC as a young teen...and rediscovered em as an older teen....now what i read seems to be much more then the stories i remember them as, things make sense. im older now, and when i told my fiance yesterday that i had signed up for this forum....you know what he said "wow...when did my hard-core, tattoo covered woman become a nerd?" ....i was borderline insulted...and i refuse to let him make me feel like i wouldnt fit in here. you dont have to be a nerd to love reading and discussion....do you? maybe i am a nerd and i just dont look like it...what do nerds look like anyway??

That depends greatly on your definition of nerd .
Welcome to Hatrack! I'm the same in that OSC's books (particularly The Worthing Saga) have shaped much of my philosophy on life.
We have our share of nerds here, but one of the beauties of it is that it is so immensely diverse. If you're really interested in the community and like to talk about ... anything, check out the Other Side (Books, Film, Food and Culture). There's a lot more activity there. Hatrack really is a jewel among forums, in my humble opinion. It's shaped me quite substantially as well. Who knows what I'd be without OSC.
Edit: As to the age groups, everyone's pretty well represented. Some teenagers (myself included), some young adults, some middle aged adults, some older people ... pretty much anyone and everyone. I think the youngest regular was around 13, though I haven't seen her around much. And I think someone is in their 60's. I'd say most people are 20-40 though.

Hatrack has made me smarter. There are some very intelligent people here and I love reading their threads. Hatrack's helped me open my mind and keep up on world news. I visit at least once a day to keep up, and I'm trying to post once a day now too. I felt so inadequate at first (and I'm sure some still think I am), but I hope to someday be able to articulate as well as a lot of people here can.

I'll add my welcome as well as a few observations I've made around here in the short time I've been present. These aren't rules by any means, merely personal feelings/observations...
- someone will get offended by almost anything you could think of to say. Try not to get offended back or be too defensive, as that probably won't help.
- many people here appreciate The Funny, but some define the term differently. Expect a wide range of responses to most any joke.
- if you would like to critique OSC in any negative way, be sure to couch it in the most polite terms possible. Some posters may be sensitive about this.
- I received this message when I started posting, so I will pass it on to you. Correct capitalization, punctuation, grammar and spelling are highly valued here. Not to say anything specific about your posts, but there are a few grammar nazis hanging around.
- being a nerd is a good thing and there are no physical prerequisites. I have many a tattooed, spiky haired, pierced nerd friend.
Feel free to ignore any and all points made.

Of course you'll fit in here. Why wouldn't you? You're articulate, and you enjoy reading. Those are really the only two requirements for blending in around here. If you bring a perspective that no one else here happens to share (which is unlikely, but possible) so much the better.

If your definition of "nerd" is "person who loves reading and discussion", then yes. And I'm sure that there are people out there for whom reading is so foreign a leisure activity that engaging in it is, all by itself, enough to qualify you as a nerd in their eyes. That strikes me as a painfully limited (and limiting) perspective, though.

I was planning on writing a long post how I get to read the Ender's saga but I can't get myself to post my long explanation . you don't have to be anything to enjoy a good book . I will hardly come under the classification of a Nerd . I enjoyed the speculations and the analysis of Human nature by OSC and his really weird scientific theories I have just completed the Ender's Child of the minds and started with Ender's Shadow which I am really enjoying. Well, you have to enjoy reading OSC in particular. It's very tough around here if you like to find fault with his novels.
Lots of people like to find fault with his personal opinions, though, somehow....
Welcome kristina! We've got a little bit of every kind here: different races, different religions (and no religion), different types of families, different countries, different politics, almost every kind of person - except for, well, people who don't like to read.
And I'd bet one thing we all have in common is thinking, right or not, that we're relatively smart.

Wow, no one has told the newbies where to send their protection money. I'm impressed.
The 21 step program for quitting hatrack:
1. Recognize that you've made an unforgivable ass of yourself on a public forum on the world wide web.
2. Come to believe that you once had a life without hatrack, that maybe you could go back to.
3. Post a goodbye thread in which so many people say not entirely negative things that you make a go of it.
4. Make a searching and fearless inventory, which you then post as a landmark.
5. Take offense at the dozens of people who didn't reply on your landmark.
6. Take offense at the people who did reply, but didn't say it was the most amazing thing they'd ever read.
7. Post-stalk all the people who did appreciate your landmark.
8. Choose your hatrack nemesis.
9. Go everywhere they go and disagree with everything they say.
10. Accept that your nemesis is a prick and stop reading anything with their name attached to it.
11. Try to control your use of hatrack by establish a limit on how much time or a number of posts you will make.
12. Experience an employment crisis and wonder if it was because they were tracking your internet usage.
13. Commit to posting only in serious threads.
14. Burn out on serious threads.
15. Commit to only posting on fluff and "a game" threads.
16. Have it pointed out to you by a friend that you are only posting on fluff and "a game" threads.
17. Start commenting on the first post or title of a thread without reading the whole thing.
18. You start posting mayflys.
19. You begin to have mayflys addressed to you.
20. You start asking Hatrack for medical and legal advice.
21. You start asking Hatrack for marriage counseling advice.

Nah. Not really. Liking OSC is certainly one of the things most of us have in common, but it's not noticeably harder to fit in here if you don't than if you do.

I just remmember OSC saying that you will never learn anything by just accepting everything someone is saying to you, you can only learn when you try to find fault or just think over if what they say is right or wrong over yourself which is very true so there is nothing wrong in finding fault but without a biased opinion

Sure, you can post your opinions. If I were you, though, I'd be very careful about how I worded them, and I certainly wouldn't say anything "bad" about Card. Make sure to be very polite and give the respect due to the owner of the website and highly esteemed author.
These forums have been described as OSC's living room, were we can hang out and talk. Picture it that way: how would you phrase your opinions if you were in his living room having coffee with him? Feel free to question and discuss his printed view, but I would avoid supposing anything that isn't explicitly stated and/or attacking or critiquing the man himself.
Of course, you'll still probably get flamed anyway.

Just saying...
I am 12 (turning 13 December 30) and I've read probably half the books in the series: Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant.
I first read Ender's Game at age 10.
Most people fail to realize how smart children really are. I mean, sometimes I read books, and the children characters are completely... dumb compared to the real children of today.
Intelligence goes a long way. Nerds are just awesome, never mind the stereotypes.
