I just got a notification from Amazon today about buying this book (because I've purchased other OSC books...) but I've never heard of it and its not listed in the bibliography as published, upcoming, or anything. Anybody know what this is? It has a release date of August 20th and the plot looks cool. I'm just surprised I didn't hear about it first here...? Is the joke on me? Has it been here all along?

OK, sorry, I just saw the post below called "Spaceboy". I swear I looked before I created my topic, now its redundant. But seriously, how come there is zero info on this site. I'm used to being able to read the first 5 chapters, etc. months before his book comes out. What is the story?

I've read it already! It was actually released a few weeks ago from Subterranean Press and I bought the Signed edition from them for $35. That edition is sold out and all that's left from Subterranean is the $150 edition, so I suggest picking up the one available from Amazon.

It's more of a novella...under 100 pages and illustrated by Lance Card. Really great story about a boy whose mother disappeared without a trace who discovers a "wormhole" that leads to another world. Cool book!

Sounds like "A Wrinkle in Time" from your description.

Not "A Wrinkle in Time" at all...though I see how you could take that from my brief description [Razz]

OK, so I see that its out there, and I'm sure its good. What puzzles me is why it didn't get any publicity on this site? I was surprised that the first I heard of it was from an Amazon e-mailer. Usually I get lots of advance notice here at Hatrack. Did I somehow miss it?

I was wondering why it didn't get more publicity over here also. The only reason I had heard about it was because I subscribe to Subterranean Press' email newsletter and they told me it was being published awhile ago. Strange...

Amazon had this book listed last week for $21. I tried to order it today, and apparently they are out of stock. One of their 3rd-party "partners" has the book for sale for $45.

YIKES!!! Is it in the stores at B&N yet?

Posted by Craig Childs (Member # 5382) on :

The audiobook is coming out on Saturday, but B&N has removed the link to preorder the book itself.

Does anyone know if Audible is going to be carrying the audio version?

There should be publicity on this site any minute now [Smile] The Hatrack Store will have about 100 copies to sell. It is a limited edition, so it won't be widely available in stores. Look for a link to order here later today.

Amazon.com cancelled my order for SpaceBoy [Frown] They said they don't actually have the book to sell!

It is a limited edition book (so lots of stores won't get any) -- we have about 100 to sell on Hatrack -- I suggest you get it here [Smile]

Is there anything different between the hardcover currently for sale and the version that will appear in the short story collection?

Posted by kacard (Member # 200) on :

The only different is the illustrations.

I think I own all of OSC's books, except for Cardography. (I got the complete list from Michael Collings' bibliography, Storyteller). But I'll be frank: this is a hard one to purchase - after shipping, it costs $43 - that's a lot of money to pay for a story that will appear in an anthology in a few months.

But on the other hand, I do really want to read it... and it would complete my collection....
hmmm... hard decisions, hard decisions...

Did anyone else read this book? I was a little dissappointed in it. It wasn't a bad story, but... it just felt sorta empty to me. What did you think?

After shipping and handling, and ordering the signed version, it cost me around $45. Had I known that it was only an hour long read, I probably wouldn't have spent so much on it. I thought it was a whole novel >.<

C'est la vie. At least I have another book to add to my OSC signed collection.

I did like the story though, I just wasn't expecting it to be so short.

Well, I did, in the end, shell out the $43 for this book and read it in about 45 minutes this afternoon. It was decent short story. But I don't think it was good enough to justify being published as a standalone hardcover with $35 retail.

I don't want to be rude, but this is kind of a pet peeve of mine: many authors commission very high priced limited editions to appeal to fans who want to collect all of an author's books. I realize OSC can publish whatever he wants--and I have the choice to purchase or not-- but it feels like an unfair attempt to wring more money from the most loyal fans.

Kind of like musicians (in the days before MP3) who would put out a "best of" album with one or two new songs. The hardcore fan has to pay for the whole album just to get those two new songs.

I stopped buying Dave Matthews' work as soon as he did that. It really pissed me off.

It's a shame, I thought the point of writing something and illustrating something was to try to get as many people to see it as possible.

I imagine this version of Spaceboy will find it's way onto the net sometime soon... and most people that will download it, would have probably rather strolled into their local bookstore and just purchased a copy, even at an outrageous 45 dollars.

The thing that upset me was that after I bought it, it came out on audible almost right after for MUCH cheaper. Not that autograph's aren't cool and all - but $20 for a signature seems a bit high to me.

Oh well - I learned my lesson.

I just checked out Space Boy from my local Library. It's one of the $35 signed editions. There were only about 2000 of those, weren't there? I don't know if they know that it's signed.
