Does anybody know if Mr. Card plans on hosting another Boot Camp workshop in 2008? I tried to make it last year but work interfered despite my best efforts to make it not interfere. [Frown]

Yes, an announcement about it will be up soon. Thanks for asking.

Good luck, Libbie. I keep debating with myself about this. I know that others seem to speak well of the thing. And the one time I met Mr. Card, which was many years ago now, he could not have come across as being any smarter or warmer.... It was a great experience for me.

So I've been having thinking about attending for years. But so far haven't. But anyway.

I was at Boot Camp in 2003. It was worth every second away from my family and every penny I spent. If you're serious about starting or deepening your writing career, I highly recommend it.

I think this should be my year. Unless, of course, I don't get in. Or if it's the first week of July.

I went this last year, and also highly recommend it. His critiques and instruction was invaluable, and the friendships I made have also been an incredible fringe benefit.

Awesome! Thanks, Mrs. Card. Apparently one of my cousins actually made it in last year so now I can't be left out of the fun. [Wink] I only heard that he attended a few weeks ago. Word travels slowly when you've got 52 cousins to talk to.

TL - I hope you'll give it a shot! It would be so cool to meet other Hatrackers there.

Scott R - I am very, very, very serious about starting and deepening my writing career! I've been serious about it since I was a kid, but only decided that I could tolerate my own writing in the last couple of years, and now I'm obsessed with working on my career (which technically doesn't exist yet, but I THINK I may have just sold something to ASIM and I've got another piece submitted to IGMS [Wink] ). By the way, a copy of WOTF XXI fell into my hands on a recent road trip and I thought Blackberry Witch was the best of the whole bunch. You rock!

Pooka - YAAYY!! I think this might be my year, too, unless I don't get in either. You never know. I could write a real bomb and get a big fat "NO THANK YOU LIBBIE." But I am so hoping for it! I've been wanting to attend a Boot Camp for several years, and thought I'd be able to apply last year. Stupid self-run business always gets in the way of more important things. Okay, it's pretty important to keep food on the table and the rent paid up, but still. Writing is more fun. AND I have family in Orem I could have visited! Nuts!

Verloren - thanks! I have so far heard nothing but good things about it. One annoying wiener on another forum claimed that a friend of a friend went to one and that OSC reduced some girl to tears with a critique, so therefore he must be the world's biggest jerk, but come on - "friend of a friend" stories never ring quite true and anyway, whoever bawls over a critique probably doesn't have thick enough skin yet for an intense writing workshop anyway. It sounds great to me - you just confirmed it. [Wink]

You are clearly a person of superior intelligence and phenomenal taste.

Welcome to Hatrack-- you're completely right.

I know about the bootcamp. Doesn't he do one day seminars open to anyone? Does he still do those? I live in Nebraska, but shall probably live in Utah shortly, so I would love to go to one of those.

Alas, if boot camp is in the cards (ha!) for me at all, it will have to be when I'm not inundated with tiny children.

If I understand the system correctly, this year's bootcamp should be at SVU. At least, that's what I'm hoping.

And, yes (at least in Utah this last year), the first 2 days of the week-long event are open to anyone. He basically goes through his 1000 ideas in an hour session and talks about the kinds of things you would find in Characters and Viewpoint. However, even if it is repetitive in some aspects, having him teach it in person is always fun. Plus, he would add little bits here and there for clarification. And, if that don't beat all, you can volunteer to read your plot card to the entire group and get feedback on it right there.

They're open to anyone, but there is tuition for the open workshop. I think you have to be registered for the workshop to be considered for boot camp.

It sounds like so much fun! Here's hoping there will be no scheduling conflicts for me this year.
