Was shadow of the Giant the end of bean's story? Do we envision him floating around is space forever? I hope there will be another shadow story, one with a happier ending. I would like to know bean found peace, not death in space. Please orson scott card write another bean story.

OSC is on record as saying that Bean finds death in space.

thank you did I miss that in the shadow of the giant?

No. I've heard him say it in person, at signings and the like.

well so much for my wish bean would come home before petra dies. thanks for the info.

Even if Bean did come home before Petra dies she would be old and that shock would be too much. If your read Mazer's Prison you might get a better feel of what would happen to a family interrupted by relativistic travel.

Also Card says that Shadows in Flight will tie in Shadow of the Giant and Children of the Mind so the time difference would be thousands of years after Petra was already dead.

I think that Bean even said that if a cure was found in Petra's lifetime he still wouldn't come back until after she died. It would just be too weird otherwise, with him still being a teenager/young adult and their children still being young, while Petra would be an old lady with a family of her own, already mourning the loss of two husbands. It would be painful and awkward for everyone involved.

No real word on when Shadows in Flight will be published but with Ender in Exile coming in November it couldn't be too long.

Yeah, if the trend continues, only 3 more years until the next Ender novel after E in E.

It occurred to me that Ela & company successfully altered the genes of the Godspoken and could be able to do the same thing for Bean's children so they'd stop growing if they were to meet.

We've talked about this in other threads and I had the same thought but many many many people shot that theory down.

How would Bean react to finding that good ol' "he has the soul of a jackal" Peter Wiggin is his replacement? that and he would exposing the "altered" children to the possibility of kidnap or wanting to stay and alter the world to thier ideals as he did. Even in a post-formic war world, its kinda noticable when a space-ship comes to Earth.

I think Bean grew to enourmous size and due to the no gravity, there was no stress on his heart, his bones whithered away to nothing and he became a huge gelatinous ball that eventually began to take up so much space that he had to say a heartfelt goodbye to his children who were then forced to blast him into space... Beans' children who are, naturally heartbroken look for a substitute to fill the void of their all-knowing blob-father, they decide to come out of lightspeed travel to get in on the news of what has been happening, they hear rumors of the 'existance' of Ender Wiggin in Peter form and are curious, they meet up with him. Peter/Ender begins to take over the universe bit by bit and remove the evil current government... Thats the thought I had...

Clandestineguitarplayer M exact thought (almost [Wink] ) His gelatinous ball is purely grey matter. [Razz]

And Im gonna save everyone the trouble of relating that to Giant Brain/Bean and his brain children making a whole planet of brains, and thusly try to gather all the information in the universe, as is what happened in an episode of Futurama, all leading to the joke too awesome to forget.

Bender's Game.

It'll be a while before Shadows in Flight exists as a whole novel. But I will probably write the Death of Bean as a standalone story, even though it will also be chapter 1 or even <shudder> a prologue to Shadows in Flight. when I write it, it will be published in IGMS.

Thank you for the update Mr. Card.

I really cant wait for some more Enderesque literature... I think I would even take it in documentary form at this point...

I thought that when you announced that Shadows in Flight will unite the Ender and Shadow series that Bean (or his children for that matter) will probably be dead, and might not have a place in Shadows in flight but I believe that they will have done something that will have dramatically influenced the events that take place in Shadows in Flight...

Cant wait for your two new books to come out Mr. Card , but please hurry were all very anxious.

You know, it would be ironic as anything if Bean died from something completely irrelevant, like cancer in the foot, at age 19...

ya but then the book would suck lol

I just finished reading Shadow of the Giant last night. I came here to hopefully find out what will happen to Bean. To kill Bean would be a tragic loss. I was hoping he would show up to help Peter/Ender and Wang-Mu. Besides the fact of what would happen to those 3 children in space alone with a dead father.

This is the first time I noticed this topic. I really should start reading some of the past topics I missed, I guess.

Sad to see that Bean's Death will be an IGMS thing....hopefully I'll get a chance to read it. Even if I don't I'll definitely get SIF when it comes out.

I can't believe Beans story will come to an end over at IGMS. I have never empathized with a character as much as I do with Bean. I'm not claiming to be a genius and I don't recall ever saving humanity, but Bean looks at people, relationships, and the world in much the same way I do. So it is rather heart breaking that there won’t be any more written about my beloved character. If this is how it's to end for the mighty legume so be it, I'll not question Mr. Cards choice, he's proven over and over that he knows what he's doing, it just makes me a little sad is all.

No new Bean...it's going to take a while to come to terms with that.

So farewell my friend. You have brightened many a dark night.
