My youngest sister who lives in Tokyo and goes to school there has told me that her High School English class will be reading and discussing Ender's Game and Enchantment. She also said that Mr. Card is scheduled to speak at her school, is the latter true? If so, when and how long will you be in Japan? Do you have accommodations for your stay? Hotels in Japan are pretty pricey, and I am not sure if the school is paying your expenses. My parents could likely offer you folks up to two rooms at their apartment, if that is an option you'd like to look into. I'm pretty excited for my sister to be exposed to Mr. Card's literary contributions. Also if he is speaking, will he be staying around to sign books or visit with fans?

Do you know if they read those books in the normal english class or an elective class? My old school had a fantasy/science fiction class as an elective(one that they considered me to young to take!) where you read Enders game and other stuff like the Hobbit. I'm stuck reading the Catcher in the Rye, again.

Thats pretty forward thinking, what kinda school does she go to in Japan thats American based? maybe a military base but I cant imagine any of those as being so much more educational than our public schools state side.

I wish my classes could have some studies of Enders Game, or any other OSC novel, for that matter. Unfortunately, high school Honors English classes seem to be illiterate in any genre that isn't tragedy, political satire, minority fiction, or Shakespeare.
But then, Empire could count as political satire... oh, wait, it demonizes liberal groupthink...
But don't Enchantment and Magic Street feature minorities? Oh, wait, the author is white...
The on-level courses get to read Ender's Game, but then they don't have the involved discussions and thorough analysis. What's the point in reading Ender's Game for school and not getting to talk and write about it?

AchillesHeel: There are so many foreigners working in places like Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur that all of those places have schools sometimes multiple schools created by foreigners, staffed by mostly foreigners, and the children of foreigners attend there. They are all privately funded, and exist on land simply purchased by the school.
My own school, Hong Kong International School, had two campuses and covered a K-12 curriculum. The tuition was as expensive as an ivy league college. It was organized by a private Lutheran organization, and so Christianity as well as all other world religions was part of the curriculum.
In Kuala Lumpur I attended school at International School of Kuala Lumpur, ISKL, for four years. That school was not organized by a religious group, and was parent governed. So while we learned about Islam and how to respect our Muslim neighbors, there was no compulsory chapel meetings like at HKIS.

Man am I jealious, I went to public school in AZ, have fun in that whole "ruling class" scene. No seriously, good for you for getting a real education, majority of the people in my state dont even know the prinicipal differance between Judiuism and Christianity.

My wife's minor was Japanese...she speaks about 5 languages not including English....and she would love to go there someday.
We are both history buffs (not in a classroom setting per say but in a real life see it with your own eyes way) and we are in awe of the history of the land and the people there. We went to Gettysburg for our Honeymoon, then to DC to see the town together.
I hope you enjoy your stay there.

There is a Japanese Hatracker here; her name is in the “Shadow Puppets” acknowledgements. Also, you don’t have to worry about signs in Tokyo, they are all in English as well as Japanese.
