Dear Mr. Card (and members of the Hatrack River community),

I have been a fan of yours for years, since someone first put Ender's Game in my hands as a pre-teen. I think I have read every book or novella you have published, regardless of genre. I am enamored with the way you are able to keep human nature, with all its beauty and flaws, the central focus of all that you write.

I have also followed some of your op-ed and column writing. While it's clear to me that you and I would disagree on many topics, I thoroughly appreciate the thought you put into what you write, and the way you prove that being a man of faith doesn't mean you can't also be a man of reason. Your arguments are compelling, whether I share your views or not. There are many, particularly those in politics, who would do well to learn from you, and how you maintain a tone of respect for others, even when you disagree most vehemently.

I remain, as always, a faithful fan.

And thats why i left originally, i hated my point not being taken seriously just because i have never taken a grammer class.

I never took a "grammar" class, either. I don't expect MY points to be taken seriously when they're not presented in a clear manner. The rest of the internet is full of places that don't care about clear communication. I do, and will continue to selfishly attempt to keep hatrack a forum of clear communication.

I generally do have understandable posts so i understand, but i do remember when i would be mocked for grammer mistakes and what not.

i have actually learned to omit grammar on purpose in order to affect a specific, more casual tone.

see, that's casual enough not to capitalize "I" or initial letters in sentences, but not so informal as to fail to cap it off with a period.

other notable informal-grammar fun stuff includes using a period instead of a questionmark to indicate a base, incredulous, or deadpan tone. also fun: suspending all grammar including periods to indicate 'fakeposting' sarcasm. reduction of proper sentence formatting to express a more chillax 'face,' attitude wise.

the options are endless. seriously, it's great.

I am going to try my very best, (using parenthetical phrases and everything) to make the most grammar perfect statement known to mankind: Though only a Junior in high school, I have been educated in the art of word usage; there are some who would criticize this passage, and I welcome it. Please, if you can, find a grammar mistake in all of this.

This has been, by far, one of my favorite topics to have read these past couple days. It started out with something thoughtful and kind, had humor, and absolutely no breakdown to argument.

Not really a grammar mistake, but why capitalize "junior" in that sentence? It isn't like it's a proper noun or anything. [Wink]

Haha, just goes to show that anything can be unnecessarily nitpicked to death by dedicated grammar police. I understand your pain, CGP.

No.

There aren't any real *mistakes* in the passage, it's just worded awkwardly. The thing about English is, intelligibility is everything.
