Hello! I am looking for historical fiction books that do not have lead characters with modern sensibilities. It drives me to madness to read a historical fiction book with the female lead applying 21st century thinking to the story; it destroys my immersion in the story and reminds me that this author knows nothing of history.

Any recommendations for books that fulfill my love of history and fiction without a lead character that doesn't fit with the times?

How do you distinguish between iconoclasts or otherwise atypical characters and people with impossibly modern sensibilities?

I mean, obviously nobody in the 1820s should use the term "mansplaining". But I think it's legitimate for a character in the 1820s to think about how women and black people should have the right to vote.

Do you have any specific examples in mind?

As I am new here, I am not real sure that I have the right nor am in or at the right place BUT I shall make one comment about what you said that women and black people would think about the right to vote. I'm not sure they would. After all, during those times this wasn't even a topic of discussion ergo less likely to be a topic of thought. I would agree that they would think they had a right to not be abused or used and likewise would think of how wonderful life would be if they were free. But thinking about voting? Don't believe they would.

Which times? In the 1820s? I can assure you it was.
