For newbies, the anything thread is where you post something that is worth mentioning but doesn't deserve its own thread.

You can post responses to people and just let the thread go where it will.

Have fun!

My first contribution:

I bought this nifty new barrette to hold back my hair in a ponytail. It's great it's big enough to hold all my hair (and mine is thick), and it looks very nice.

There's only one problem - because it's one of those fancy, new-fangled types, I have no clue how to open it back up now that I've put it on my head. It's stuck there. It might still be on there at WenchCon. I'll just have to wash my hair while it's in the barrette. I mean, it's probably never coming off.

My early christmas present is the HP desktop printer-scanner fax... now I can get Christmas cards done quicker... I should have them in the mail by tomorrow... I know that today is theoretically the last mailing day but oh well.

I'm finally getting over the nasty cold/flu that I've been suffering for about 10 days, but now my mouth is full of canker sores, so I still can't eat.

And the Smallpox vaccine for first responders will not be available in Hawaii until at least the 24th of January, so I don't have to worry about it until after my vacation to Washington DC....

Also we broke down and bought a Kirby vacuum. It was hideously expensive, but has a lifetime guarantee, and it has the strongest suction out there. We really need it it with all of the dog hair. It can adjust to become either a canister vac or an upright. Plus all of these awesome attachments, you can steam clean or do your upholstry or suck the dustmites out of your mattress it is so strong! It also has a really really long hose making it easier to vaccume my car! (which was also inundated with dog hair)

I went to a party at a local Epicurean Saturday night. Even though I was the one who had rented the store, made all the arrangements, etc., I had no idea it would turn out so nice. I must admit I was even nervous about the way it would turn out.

I discovered the coolest way to display "goodies" at a party.

They set up this chopping block in the middle of the store. They threw down a variety of lettuce leaves on the table, which on very close inspection on my nosey part, I discovered was covered with plastic. They then sat down a large oval platter on one end with grilled fennel, eggplant, mushrooms, squash, etc. Then in another corner, two baked bries surrounded by different cubed cheeses. Then the fun part...down at the other end...right on top of the lettuce, they laid out fresh fruit cut in the coolest designs, petite fours, chocolate covered strawberries and mini-cheesecakes. It was absolutely the coolest way to lay out the various appetizers served.

The hot appetizers were of course in the regular serving "things" off to the side.

I just sat there planning my own little Epicurean. It was so cool.

My cousins have named their children:

Hope

and now my other cousin, the one Ive talked about:

Charity

I can say that I am familiar with Hope, Faith and Charity.

I may get screwed out of 120 dollars at my job. Someone put in the wrong hours and they seem to be blowing me off. If they dont fix it by tomorrow and promise me that it will be in my hands by friday, Im going to quit. Of course, I will demand they give me my money if they do fix it, but if not by friday, Im outta there. I need that money.

It was really cold today.

Our room is a disaster after finals week. We're inviting people over Wednesday so that we have to clean it.

The other day, there was so much ice under our tires that Mark had to pour salt on top of the tires so he could get out of the driveway.

Having a bus go a block from your house to a block from your job when you live 30 minutes away is as good as it gets.

My husband's car is still not fixed. Dumb Fords...

I can't wait until Christmas is over so my hubby doesn't have to work long crazy hours.

Great Clips for Hair is going to have a cut a thon at the location near my house and donate 100% of the money paid for cuts during a certain time to my son's heart fund. Pretty dang cool! I'll have to get my hair cut there now.....

Before the LOTR movies ever existed, or were even announced, what was every third post on these forums about?

At the office they kept hiring people whose name I couldn't pronounce because they were of some oddball descent. Today they hired someone to compensate for the previous people - his name, and I'm not making this up, is "E".

I also bought my friend a gift yesterday that is one of those perfect ones that I know she'll love. I love it when that happens!

Finals status: I think I have two A's for two tests so far.

I'm flying home tomorrow.

Random question: It's not often that it feels like everything is going right. Life is good right now.

I was able to salvage what could have been a hideous mistake in the brownie-making process last night. I was making 2 packages of brownies (being too lazy to make them from scratch). After I finished stirring up the brownie mix, water, and eggs, I realized that the batter was runnier than it should have been. In my frenzied haste, I had put in 1 2/3 cup of water, instead of just 2/3 cup of water. Now I started to panic - I was too exhausted to drive to the store and get more brownie mix and I needed to get these made. So, I improvised - I added another 2 eggs and cup of flour (to help thicken the batter and also provide more thickening agent for the baking process), and also dumped in a bag of butterscotch chips (to help fix any flavor dilution). It turned out more like chocolate cake than brownies, but at least it tasted good!

Posted by amira tharani (Member # 182) on :

Well done Ludosti. That's pretty impressive! Admittedly, I can't cook at all, so anything of that nature impresses me.

My room is warmer now. My feet aren't freezing. And I've written 500 words of an essay, so at least I've been vaguely productive today. It was due two weeks ago, though

Finally! The kitty that was asleep in my shirt has gotten up and gone away and I can type with both hands now!

Does anyone have a no-fail fudge recipe? My husband and I have tried four times yesterday and today with different recipes and ended up with one tiny burned-tasting hard batch, one grainy soft batch, one that makes a good substitute for chocolate caramel or tootsie roll, and one good tasting but not as firm as he'd like. That was the one on the marshmallow creme jar. There is no place to buy it already made here.

Heh. So, my mother temporarily kicked me out of the house today/yesterday (Christmas Eve), because I deigned to comment on the fact that she has been yelling a lot in the past few days (yesterday she started screaming and dumping diet cherry coke down the drain because she thought it was regular coke. She made a huge mess and made my brother clean it up. ). It was very funny except for the fact that I nearly got frostbite again. Actually, looking at my hand more closely now, I'm not sure I don't have a mild case of frostbite, just on the back of my hands this time instead of on the palm. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

At any rate, it was a typical family holiday. Each season one of us (out of my two brothers, my father, and myself) takes the heat, or in this case, the cold. Since it was my father at our summer gathering and one of my brothers at each Thanksgiving and Easter, I guess I should have expected that Christmas would belong to me.

(I'm not going to post again to avoid confusion with others who use this nickname.) I've been lurking here, but by the time I'd decided that I wanted to post here, Hatrack was not accepting new registrations. I hope you guys dont't mind, and I'll continue lurking here until new registions are accepted... bye

Depends on what you like to do Mae. You could write a story, not worrying about whether it's any good or not, but just for fun. If you can't come up with a plot, open up some book you've never read, copy out its first sentence, and use it as a spring-board for your own story.

If you like building things, find some raw material that is in plentiful supply, such as toothpicks, drinking straws, Q-Tips, or whatever, a bottle of glue, and go to town.

Or you could always experiment with cooking--take stock of what ingredients are available to you, and play around with them to see what dishes you can make out of them. I've created some of my favorite receipes this way.

You could pick up some book of your parents that you've never read, and read at least the first chapter of it.

You could use online resources to start teaching yourself a new language.

You could blindfold yourself, and see how well you can get around the house without sight to assist you.

You could tie your fingers together (or have someone else do it) and see how well you could do things if you had paddles instead of fingers.

You could draw, or find something to sculpt with.

You could teach yourself to juggle, or get better at juggling if you already know how to do it.

If all else fails, go to Shockwave and play some of the games. I've been having fun with Dynomite, but quite a few of them are fun.

::jumps and down excitedly:: I just got invited to attend Brown University's Pre-College summer program! I'm not, however, quite sure I'll be accepting the invitation. My family is moving in July and I tend to have at least three disturbingly time-consuming projects due at the beginning of the school year. Who knows? I'll probably go anyway. Not only will it be fun, but it will look great on a college application... Or so I hope.

Random Christmas story: My great aunt is obsessed with mothballs. When you visit her, you walk into her house and that is what you smell. SHe is a great lady don't get me wrong. Our christmas presents came in two boxes, one specifically to me and the other to my brothers. So I opened my box and gave the wrapped presents a good airing out for a couple days before Christmas. I didn't open my brothers box because I figured the pleasure should be theirs. Anyway on Christmas Eve evening (when my family opens presents) Nate opened the box and it REEEKED of mothballs. He pulled all of the presents out, and out of the bottom of the box rolled an actual mothball. This caused much consternation because all were overcome by the smell. The sweaters and shirts she gave them were rapidly washed, but they are at a loss with what to do about the complimenting ties!

You can tell that sledding is good for your soul from the soreness it brings the next day. Same goes for shovelling snow. There isn't much about snow, really, that isn't good for your soul.

Frostbite, maybe?

and AJ, somewhere I think I read that being around too many mothballs is not good for you. Maybe your great aunt needs some help there. Older people sometimes lose their sense of smell, too, so she may not know she is overdoing it.

Did you ever try to save snow as a child? I can remember hoarding it in boxes or trying to put it into cups in my freezer but the mysterious white stuff always eluded me and eventually melted. *sigh* I think I thought if I found a way to store it, I could ski all year long!

Congrats to your son, Fael!

And yes, as children we saved a small snowman in our freezer for ages. This was, of course, before we had "frost-free". Eventually he incorporated himself into the freezer compartment frost and we finally had to pull the plug on him. He had by then become like ice, and had become fast friends with a 7" trout stored for eternity in mother's small Tupperware mixing bowl. It was my cub scout brother's first catch.

Or maybe they pulled my grades out of hats...

I registered in August in order to discuss Shadow Puppets, and now I am hooked, though I mostly just read stuff and stay in the shadows. One thing I enjoy most about this forum is that it is so varied in the topics it discusses. It's great to go from a philosophical discussion, into a pie fight, into a touching story, into a hunt for an Evil Monkey, into girl talk...etc.

Anyway, just wanted to pop up for a second to say hi again and here's to 100 more!

At one of my jobs, we're doing a tech expo for faculty all day Thursday and Friday. If you've never had to man a booth before, they can be particularly exhausting, especially if you're doing it the whole day. On your feet the whole time, talking to countless strangers, constant smile on your face and perky attitude... It'll wear you out, even if you enjoy it.

So, not only did the jerks from the department in charge of the thing put my table in the worst location possible for the show, I was just informed that the people manning booths aren't allowed to eat the catered food!!

Now, I've done a heck of a lot of trade shows. A lot! And this is totally unheard of. Vendors are the hard-working people who make the stupid show POSSIBLE, and it's not like they have a lot of time to go out and get lunch. The crappy catered food is usually all they'll eat all day. To not allow them to eat is a huge slap in the face.

Damn them all. If it wouldn't get my boss in trouble, I'd pull the booth right out of the show.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Bring your own food...something extremely messy (sloppy joes? meringue pie?) and share it with everyone who comes to your booth.

(waiting for someone to make a 'booth babe' comment)

Posted by Polystyrene (Member # 3612) on :

I prefer "booth bunny", thanks.

And it's being held in a library, of all places, so you can't bring your own food in!!

I'm thinking a boycott or mass protest is in order. It's not so much the lack of access to what will surely be lousy food, but the principle of it. To not let the people doing all the work eat! It's unthinkable!

I tried a really easy, really tasty Thai fish receipe this weekend. It basically consists of steaming a pound or so of any kind of white fleshed fish--I used cod, but you could use anything--and covering it with a garnish and a sauce.

The Garnish:
1 TBSP kii noo chilis (literally called "rat sh*t chilis, these are the small narrow chilis commonly used in Thai cuisine), chopped almost to the point of liquification.
3 TBSP minced garlic
2 TBSP green onions (the green part), finely chopped.

The Sauce:
3 TBSP lime juice
2 TBSP fish sauce
1 TSP sugar

Steam the fish for about 10 minutes, cover with the garnish, and pour the sauce over the top of it. Eat immediately.

It's tasty if you can handle very, very hot food. I recommend having cabbace, or cucumbers, or something like that handy to munch on if the heat gets to be too much.

The garlic can be a bit much after the fact, but it's certainly tasty while you're eating it.

Random question:
What makes a date a date?

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

good question... in one relationship, or quasi-relationship I was in, this subject was discussed extensively by my female friends and I. We were doing a lot of atheletic activities together, like kayaking, biking, rollerblading etc. But, even though we were both physically attracted to the other there were no holding hands etc. (though it is kind of hard to do these things while kayaking bicycling or roller blading) But we were spending oodles of time with each other and enjoying ourselves. Now that I'm living with someone else the friendship has remained. But for that particular part of my life I still don't know how to define that relationship. We were definitely using each other for emotional support from the opposite sex, and there was sexual tension there, though it was never acted up.

Were we dating or not? I don't know.

According to what someone else wrote here, maybe you were dating in the European sense? Casually hanging out together doing fun stuff? I think this bizzare structure and formality around dating we've got is somewhat limited to the US. At least, I hope people in other countries are less insane about it.

On another note, I started drawing today! I learned how to measure angles at a distance with my pencil, and I drew a chair!! It was very exciting. I still haven't washed the graphite off my hands.

I might actually learn to draw!!

I have to stay home with a sick kid tomorrow. I hope my sick days make it to the end of the year.

Tomorrow I'll find out if my medicaid fiasco is really straightened out like DCF told me it was, when I try to take her to a pcp for the first time since moving a year and a half ago. Until now, we have had to go to the hospital, or pay outright for service at a walk in clinic.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Nope, not straightened out. The doctor I was given a month ago by DCF doesn't accept Medicaid. I may have straightened it out now, but I won't know until March because every time you make a change, it takes over a month to go through. Is this ludicrous, or what?

Speaking of ludicrous government bureaucracy, there is no number listed in the phone book for DCF or for medicaid. You have to start calling agencies pretty much at random, each one bumping you to the next, until you hit paydirt. And no one number could take care of all of our needs. One number will tell you who the Medicaid providers in your area are, but won't change your assigned one. Another number will change your provider, but can't tell you what your choices are. Both of them, however, have a recording before you speak to an operator that tells you to call DCF for either of those things. DCF tells you to call Medicaid. grrr...

I was able to get a pediatrician's appointment for today, though.

You know, I loved playing for that show. A show set in Siam is very good for an oboist. "The Children's March" (or whatever the actual title of the song is) was especially fun - I derive a special kind of joy from oboe solos.

Interesting things about my school:

1) There are at least 19 different places on campus where you can buy a fresh sandwich for lunch.

2) Attached to the main undergraduate library is a tower filled with bells at the top. Three times a day, a student will climb to the top of this 9-story tower and play a 20 minute concert. The afternoon and evening concerts end with the Alma Mater and the Evening Song, respectively. The selection of songs ranges from traditional carillon music to hymns to pop music. The tone of each concert, though, is determined by the weather and the proximity to any major holidays. Thus, as today is primarily gloomy and cold, we heard melancholy winter songs: two hymns, and the "Chim-chimeny" song from Mary Poppins. When it rains we hear "The Rainbow Connection", "The Sun'll Come Out Tomorrow", "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", "Yesterday", etc. Beatles and S&G are particularly popular on rainy days. In the spring and summer, the concerts are filled with lively showtunes and pop music. Christmas carols for christmas, fugues for halloween, songs that have the word "green" in them for St. Patrick's Day, etc. Usually, these concerts are enjoyable to hear as you walk to class. Sometimes, though, the performer in the tower will be either too inexperienced or choose a piece poorly suited for 22 large bells, and everyone on campus will be subjected to 20 minutes of pain. It's times like these that put me in a letter-writing mood.

3) There are 8 different places where you could order Pad Thai in this town, though none are on campus.

4) Garrison Keillor once did an entire Prarie Home Companion at and about my school, including several sketches involving the origin of the town's name and a commentary on why anyone would choose to attach 22 large bells to a library.

5) Almost no one interesting ever went here. The few famous people we can claim are weird and boring. Except for one, but he's dead. And he was pretty weird, too.

The advertisements were popular with some viewers (and annoying to others), doing for slacker college students what Clara Peller did for the geriatric set when she bellowed "Where's the beef?" in Wendy's commercials.

Emphasis mine. Personally, this guy annoys the crap out of me, and it also annoys me that he is portraying my generation. But what's even worse is that other people - like the writer of this article - see him, nod, and say "yeah, that's what college kids are like" - they ACCEPT the portrayal. I have to wonder how many people his age actually like those commercials. They don't encourage me to buy a Dell; maybe they're trying to encourage my parents to buy me a Dell. q:

Big brother Kyle seems to be taking Connor's arrival well so far. He "helped" Mommy changed Connor's diaper and insisted his were never that stinky.

This Saturday, the day after Valentine's Day is the three year anniversary of my best friend's death. She committed suicide by overdosing on Tylenol a month after she turned 21. Needless to say, I am very sad and I want to live in tomorrow so as to avoid getting to Saturday. I am going to the cemetary... I haven't visited her grave in a long time because my mom doesn't enjoy taking me to graveyards. Tomorrow before I spend time with Emp, my friend Cookie is taking me to visit my dad's grave, too, because I haven't been there in way too long either. But the anniversary of his death (3 years) isn't until June 1st. So yeah, that is my random bit of information.

My Son, My exectuioner - by Donald Hall

My son, my executioner
I take you in my arms,
quiet and small and just astir
and whom my body warms

Sweet death, small son, our instrument
of immortality
your cries and hungers document
our bodily decay

We twenty-five and twenty-two
Who seemed to live forever
Observe enduring life in you
and start to die together

My second job, which I started in August and at which I am currently wasting away during a shift, is really starting to wear on me. I don't really do anything here, as there isn't much work to be done, and we're overstaffed. What little influence I had over certain things when I started has been lost, and I'm not sure why. My boss is a wonderful person, but some of my coworkers are starting to act really macho and annoying.

In short, I'm not really happy here. The good news is that another job fell into my lap last week, pays more than twice as much, is totally flexible, and is something I actually want to do. The bad news is that it's going to be at least three weeks until I can quit, and I'll feel really guilty about quitting if I do.

Sounds rough, I know. But, even though this is actually a really good situation in the big picture, it's a bummer right now, and I just wanted to vent. And hope this shift ends soon.

Of course, last week I was miserable as all hell, unable to breathe because of my cold and bursting into tears at the slightest of provocations, so I guess this just evens things out.

*rant*

We have these annoying neighbors. They cook fish 3-4 times a week. Greasy fish. When they aren't cooking fish they reused the grease and cook other things that smell like fish. It is so bad that it knocks you over in the entryway to all four apartments (one of them being mine). The problem being that we can't complain to the management because while there is stuff in the lease on noise pollution, there is nothing about smells. The other night it was so bad I was gagging in my living room.

We (the other two non-smelly neighbors and myself) are combating it with glade plug ins in the entry way and lots and lots of apple cinnamon candles (like 10-12 around the apartment) since those have the most potent scents. I have gone to pre-emptive candle lighting just in case they decide to cook. They also start cooking at about 8:30-9 at night which is just about the time that I am finished eating dinner and looking forward to a relaxing evening and then bed by about 10pm. The problem is 9:30 is when the smell is the most potent and it is getting more and more difficult to sleep through it, since I can't leave the candles on while I'm asleep!

It is highly annoying.

Years ago I bought a Bengali cookbook, but I never really looked at it until a few days ago. The food in it looks delicious! I tracked down an Indian grocery not far from my work, so over lunch I went and bought a bunch of ingredients. Turns out that there is a restaurant attached to the grocery store, and they threw in a meal, which turned out to be some of the most delicious Indian food I've ever had. It seemed more like a home cooked meal than restaurant fare. I'm having a good day.

Good to know! I used to cook a lot of Thai food, and between the shrimp paste, fish sauce, and incindiary kii noo chilis, not to mention the perfume of galankal, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves, I got used to some pretty zingy air.

Hmmm...now I'm making myself hungry for Thai food.

Anyway, I can't wait to experience the scents of Bengali cooking. Has your friend ever passed along any good recipes?

"Don't accidentally run over an open tube of blistex that you didn't realize you knocked off of your desk with your office chair."

This is such a bad sentence I apologize. I was obvious delirious just before leaving work last night!

For clarification: My elbow inadvertantly knocked the blistex off my desk. The chair (with me in it) then ran over the blistex, squirting gooeyness everywhere.

Do you drop the y and add an "i" to gooey? Gooeiness doesn't look right, neither does Gooiness.

I was all set to write something lampooning that sentence, Banna, but you beat me to the punch by pointing it out yourself!

Do you just not like the spices that are typically found in Indian dishes, or do you not like spicy food in general? And by spicy do you mean hot, or are you including things like cumin, corriander, ginger, etc?

I'm a big fan of Indian spicy goodness, so if you ask your friend for recipes that she likes, tell her that she doesn't have to worry about them being too spicy.

Does she know any good Biryani recipes? I don't think that Biryani is distinctively Bengali (I could be wrong about that though), but it definitely is tasty.

Okay, lots more to cover.

First off, I have joined the 21st century by purchasing a DVD player . Its a combo DVD/VHS thingy, and the casing is all metal. Its bas ass.

My DVD collection so far:

Terminator 2 (Ultimate Edition)
Fight Club
Braveheart
American History X
The Matrix
LOTR: FotR (Extended Edition)
Star Wars: AotC (Widescreen)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

On their way from Amazon (though some won't be arriving for weeks):
Saving Private Ryan
Aliens (Special Edition)
Alien 3
Dead Poet's Society

That I plan to get eventually:
The Predator
Shawshank Redemption
X-Men
LOTR: TTT (when it comes out)
Titanic?
Star Wars:TPM?
Good Will Hunting?

I love this format! DVDs rule. I love widescreen too, though my TV is the regular kind, I don't mind the black bars. Letter-box is the only way to go.

I am currently developing an artificial ecology in my AI2 class. I have one predator and prey organism each, and need names!

World, Predator, and Prey all need names. Any ideas?

Hekani cuisine? Nope, never heard of it. A google search didn't turn up anything either. Next time you drive by the place jot it down.

Banna--no rush! Whenever you talk to your friend works for me. I made two of the recipes in that cookbook I mentioned last week, by the way, and they were both phenomenal. Well, one was good and one was astoundingly good. My wife liked them too, and she hasn't been that wild about Indian food she's had before.

In other news, I've decided that I can no longer eat meat, eggs, or dairy products that come from animals who have been raised and kept in inhumane conditions. For a long time I balked at paying the extra cost for free range products, but it occurred to me that essentially I was condoning the systematic torture of living beings by doing so.

My building just had a fire alarm go off, and everyone evacuated. It's a tall building, and I've previously been struck by what I feel are internal similarities to the WTC. I haven't been in a fire alarm since I was in high school, and it was definitely a chilling experience for me. I was very impressed with how quickly and calmly everyone ran down the stairwells (I'm on the fifth floor) and gathered at checkpoints outside to be crossed off a list. My department, in particular, is incredibly well prepared for this kind of thing.

Though a false alarm, it reminded me of all the deaths we've seen recently from huge groups of people crushing themselves in chaotic stampedes. It was both thrilling to see my building work together so well, and terrifying to see how bad it could be if they didn't. I was never a huge fan of fire drills before this, but looking back on how long it took me to save and close what I was doing on my computer, decide what to take, and figure out what I was supposed to do, I think we should do this more often.

Ha! Speaking of the central tooth, when my youngest brother was about four, he was bawling about something or other, with his head thrown back and mouth wide open. Out of nowhere, my mother said, "He only has three front teeth!" We made him stop crying and examined his mouth, and verified that instead of four centered small teeth on the bottom, he had three. How this escaped everyone's notice I don't know. Mom felt like a bad mother for quite some time for not noticing.

So he wouldn't have noticed anything wrong with this: [Big Grin]

And speaking of things you forgot to notice about your children, my ten year old sister told us recently that when she was little, four or five, she ran away from home.

Apparently she packed her little bag, went outside (but not across the street because she knew she wasn't allowed) and walked down the road a block or so and sat down on the curb, waited for someone to notice she was gone, and when they didn't, went back home. She says she did this several times with no effect.

I mean, we feel bad about not noticing and all, but there WERE several other children, and she WASN'T gone more than fifteen minutes. *blush* [Wink]

What would happen if you put a slinky going down the up escalator? Would that be some sort of slinky-hell?

Hmmmm . . . should I sit in on my roommate's evolution class, which is taught by a young, cute British professor (but which only has ten students, so I would really stand out)? Or should I stay here and post on Hatrack? Decisions, decisions . . .

(Edited because of lots of typos)

It doesn't seem right.

The past few days, I have been so full of love for the whole world. Everything just seems to make me happier and more amused. Here, the sun has been shining, the flowers are in bloom, and the air is warm enough that a slight breeze feels comfortable. This morning, a bird so dark that its feathers shone purple in the sun perched on the chair next to mine, stared at me, and made a laughing sound as I ate my sandwhich. Then the chapel bell tolled eleven times and the bird flew off. An old man smiled at me. I ran into Pum and Jenny from my field methods class last semester. I felt like myself from freshman year, and not myself from last year, or even myself from last semester. I realized that, no matter what I convinced my self last year, I really don't hate spring, although I still prefer autumn.

All of that feels right.

It doesn't feel right that, at the time I feel happiest about myself, crazy crazy things are going on in the world. [Frown]

I finally found a pair of chainmail undies. I can now go to the Renaissance Faire in style.

*chortles at Frisco*

I like going to dances with boys who know how to dance. And like to dance. And tell me I'm cute and gorgeous and funny. And buy me flowers. [Smile]

And I like dressing up and seeing everyone else dressed up and dancing with my friends beneath the dinosaurs at the natural science museum.

And I like eating dinner at Michelangelo's. Yummy!

And I like not missing my flight.

And I like it when my parents buy cool things for me when I'm gone. I've decided to name my new laptop after a jatraquero, although I don't know who yet. I think I'll start a contest. So look for it! [Big Grin]

I've decided that I need a second Spring Break now to recover from this not-relaxing Spring Break that just ended.

Ah, the brief taste of freedom, so abrubtly ended...

I tried an effective method when I felt the same way. Dropping out. Did wonders for my social life.

Update on Ciara (the dog with the knee injury due to car crash) after two weeks on anti inflammatories she is doing much much better. The kneecap is staying where it is supposed to and she won't need surgery in the short-term. She is staying on the anti-inflams for another two weeks to let it heal as much as possible.

I had a bit of whiplash after the wreck but nothing dire. The nice thing is that the insurance paid for my chiropractor appointments!

We also bought new bookshelves and a coffee table from IKEA this weekend. Steve also got a papazan on sale from Pier One. THe living room is finally getting decluttered because books aren't sitting on the floor everywhere.

Geesh...I thought the fireworks were loud from home...I'm at work now, supposedly working but spending far too much time here. Work is about a mile closer to Disney. The fireworks are so loud from here than sitting in my classroom, I thought somebody was vandalizing the building!

[Eek!]

I went to the doctor today because I've been having intermittent yet persistent headaches for a few days with a couple other worrisome problems. Looks like I might have migraines - I still need to get the blood work results and have a ct scan but I am so not happy about this. It's the first time I've ever had anything that might be something I have to live with the rest of my life. [Frown]

On the plus side, however, I do get to blame all my clumsiness and verbal tongue tie-ups on the migraines (whether or not the two are really related or not - I don't care) [Smile]

How are your headaches doing?

Random stuff: I still haven't gotten that Indian food recipie for Noemon... makes mental note to self.

I've been doing a lot of bookkeeping sort of odds and ends today. AAA was trying to bill me for 3 months that I already paid for. I changed geographic regions but my OK membership should have been good until May and the Chicago AAA was billing me for renewing in February. After being referred to 3 different people (nicely though cause it was a strange case) I finally got someone who could take care of it, though they still had to go up to their supervisior before they came back to me. Still a pain though.

Also was trying to pay my Sprint Cell phone bill online like always. The first time it didn't give me a confirmation number but kicked me back to my regular billing screen so I did it again. it still kicked me back. I called an actual human being but they couldn't tell what had happened. That person said as long as I didn't get a conformation number it didn't go through. Then I tried on the pay by phone system and it wouldn't accept my card. Anyway now at least one payment is showing up in my account. I'm going to be pretty annoyed if it charges me 3 times though, since it was their system that was screwing up. Hopefully the reason why it wouldn't accept the card is because there is a default not to take more than one payment from the same card in X hours.

Another random happening. I have two warts on the bottom of my right foot, yuck! However we happen to have liquid nitrogen in the lab. I've seen dermatologists assistants apply liquid nitrogen to them before, so I did it myself to myself even though I'm not a trained professional. We will see if it works!

Does anyone know where I can find Carta journals? I've been writing in journals ever since I can remember, and in my experience those are the best ones. I've already spent an hour looking . . .

My wife had a baby shower yesterday, and had a great time. She seemed to enjoy herself, and we got a lot of helpful stuff for the baby. I got to go play some games at CyberJocks all night, and for once I didn't get the tar kicked out of me in Counterstrike (now ranked 29 out of 155 players on their server, woohoo!).

I was going to go see They Might Be Giants in concert, but I couldn't because I am in a pit orchestra for the musical Damn Yankees through the local community theatre..

One of my friends went and he had such a "Kickin' Rad" time that it's making me quite envious.

Alas!

Hello! I'm sort of a newbie here. I've been posting over on the battle school (as Mereo for any other cross forum people) for a few weeks and I've been reading over this forum looking for a good thread to introduce myself here, then I noticed this one and decided to take advantage of it. By the way very cool about Lichtenstien. [Smile]

Hello!! I'm also somewhat of a newbie, and I don't think I ever introduced myself, so I will now... hello everyone! I've only been doing this for a few weeks...

Woooooooooo!! I was just told yesterday that the huge horrible paper that was punishment for not doing well in a core class was ACCEPTED!! I can graduate!! And I won't have to stay here until fall 2004 to retake the class!!!

It's very exciting. I don't know what my chances were, but I'm pretty sure they weren't good. We're talking huge personality conflict here. Thank god there are other professors in the department.

So now I'm officially in the clear! Woo!!!

Yay! Go newbies! (prepares self to be pelted with stuff) Anyhow, I'm new too, go me, and I'd like to say it's nice to meet everyone!! (You were all newbies once, too!)

Congrats, Ayelar! [Big Grin]

Hello and welcome to you newbies. [Smile]

Liechtenstein was very awesome, by the way. It was a loooooong day, but a good one.

I just found a hair (attached, but sticking out from the others...oh, who are we kidding, they all stick out from each other, this is curly hair...) with ELEVEN splits. I've seen bizarro 3- or 4-split hairs before, but ELEVEN. In the last inch! I felt the frightening experience should be shared. [Smile]

(ok. ok. it's time to cut my hair. but you know, i'm scared - i don't know how to say 'just a trim' in czech, and i have this nightmarish certainty that asking for x centimeters off would result in all my hair cut to be x centimeters long, and besides do i REALLY know how long a centimeter is, or what the right 'cut' verb is for hair, or how to make an appointment, or whether an appointment is necessary, or...right. i wonder if i could do it myself...) I love boys, but they're really, really stupid sometimes.

yesterday, via e-mail
boy: I'm going to call you tonight. Is ********** your phone number?
me: No, that's an old number. It's ##########. And I won't be home until midnight, so maybe you should call tomorrow.

later that night . . .
boy: *calls*
my roommate: She won't be home for a long time; you should call her tomorrow.
boy: I just wanted to make sure this is the right number.

(I don't know what he would have done if it hadn't been the right number. Maybe called the one I told him was wrong? [Dont Know] )

today
my other roommate: *hands me the phone*
me: Hey.
boy: How did you know it was me?
(um . . . 1) I never said your name. I could just say "Hey!" every time I answer the phone. 2) I have caller ID, and I know your phone number. 3) Um, you said you'd call, and I wasn't expecting any other calls.)
me: Magic. I knew it through magic.

*sigh* Boys are extremely strange creatures. [Roll Eyes]
