This is another cheesy Chicken Soup thread. The premise is rather simple: Just talk about something that made you happy recently. I'll start.

The trees all over campus are blooming. On the south end of campus, there's this gigantic flight of stairs that's a real pain to climb. I don't remember exactly how many steps there are, but it's well over ten thousand. Anyway, there are lots of trees alongside the stairs, and they're all blooming. It smells nice, and it's very pretty. So even though I was about to pass out from hiking the Stairs of Death, I was rather happy. It had just rained, so the air was very fresh and fragrant. The sun was out, the birds were singing, the flowers were blooming . . . if that's not cheesy, I don't know what is.

I walked 3.6 miles this morning. And on my walk I saw a lady walking her dogs and one of them saw some grade school kids waiting for the bus, so he dragged his owner over there, flopped on his back and got a multi-handed belly rub. It was so cute!!!

Jon Boy--there are 148 stairs. I've counted them numerous times.

I woke up this morning and there were still five surprise cupcakes left over from last night. Yum!

(Though I wonder what cheesy chicken soup would taste like...)

On Tuesday, I had a great day. It started out in sort of a hum-drum lazy spring break manner; I messed around with my computer and took care of my little sister. Then as afternoon approached a couple of my friends ran a spy campaign against my brother and observed him bike to a _girl's_ house (He claimed he was watching a soap opera -- but most soap operas aren't 2.5 hours long...) My spy friends came over and brought croissants, so we ate those and while sitting around talking, I got a letter informing me that I received a presidential scholarship for the University of Oregon. Then my brother came home and we sold him a croissant in exchange for him telling us what he was doing at the _girl's_ house. And if the day weren't fun enough already, I sent the evening driving around north of town with a friend exploring some of the nicer views Corvallis has to offer (Well, that and we drove by the dump.)

My new VCR has funny options. Not only can you screen out offensive language, but you can decide how much you want out. It can be off, tolerant, moderate and strict.

And on top of that, you can individually edit out "Damn & Hell" "Religious" and "Sexual" words. Now, the thing that has always amused my about Prime Time TV is that they will edit out the God, but leave the Damn it. If I set this up correctly, it should leave the God in and take the Damn out. Or, I could do it the way they do on TV.

The thing that made me happy about it, however, was the chuckle I got when thinking about Editing out all the "Religious" words and then turning on Benny Hinn or some other such program. [Big Grin]

(Man, that is so lame. I really need to get a life.)

My roommate and I really wanted to make hummus. We had everything we neede except the garbonzo beans and the lemons. So we went to our local ghetto food supplier, Town & Country Foods, and - can you believe this - not only were lemons on sale (6 for a dollar!), but garbonzo beans were on sale (2 for a dollar)! So I bought 10 cans of garbonzo beans and 6 lemons, enough to make 2 massive batches of hummus and one pitcher of lemondae, all for $6.00!

Merveilleux!!

I got emails from my girlfriend, who is leaving for two weeks, INSTEAD of a MONTH which was what was originally going to happen. She's the craziest, most nonsensically sweet girl I know, and she makes me happy.

Apart from that, I'm now spending time with the kind of people who make lists of the good things in life. This makes me happy as well, knowing that such good people exist.

Well, this was actually on friday, but no matter. I was in my morning dance class at school and my friends and i decided we needed to go to the theater and make sure our dance would work. On our way across campus we glimpsed the parking lot, and believe it or not there was a camel! A camel in our high school parking lot! I don't know what's normal in everyone else's school parking lot, but its never happened to this school and chances are never again. We ran out to the lot (who cares about rule-breaking when there's a camel!) and got to pet the camel. Her name was Cassie by the way [Smile] She was there, because she was being taken to a nursing home for animal therapy, and the guy who was transporting her and randomly chosen our parking lot to give her a breather and clean out the trailer thingy! We got to pet her once she sat down cause she must have been 4 times bigger than me. She was one of the double-humped ones from Asia. Anywho, what are the chances! Couldn't stop smiling for the rest of the day [Big Grin]

I went with Joel to work on building the set and hanging lights for a Gilbert & Sullivan show over at MIT. I wasn't too thrilled with the tech process, because nobosy seemed to know what was going on or how to do anything. But after a while of feeling generally useless there, I happened to glance down the hall and noticed people folkdancing. I went over there and they had live music and they were teaching newcomers and I danced for about two hours and it was so much fun! And I'm happy because they do it every week, so I'm gonna go back again next Sunday.

England won the Grand Slam!!!!! Three years running we fell at the final hurdle, last year we lost to France, this year... what a match! It was fantastic, lived up to all expectations... Ireland gave us a hard time in the first half, and then in the second half we ran away with it, romping all over the pitch, scoring tries from everywhere.... and we won the grand slam with our best performance of the tournament. Next stop, the World Cup! (I will be most impressed with anyone who can name the sport in question).

I'm going to toot my own horn for a bit if you don't mind -

I got accepted into upper division graphic design, which basically means I get to stay in the program and graduate. (YAHOO!)

I've been waiting for my letter since Friday, and it finally came - all soggy because it was hanging out of the mailbox, but still legible.

This is areally big deal because the graphic desgin program at MSU is among the top 30 in the nation, private & public schools included. There were over 80 applicants in portfolio review this year, and only 36 openings.

Now I get to spend thousands of dollars more for a degree I could have had this spring if I would have figured out a major earlier. Yippee!!

I went roller-skating yesterday and didn't break any bones!

Though I suppose I should explain why this is such a good thing. The first time I went skating was just over six years ago. I promptly fell and broke my wrist. Two months later, I tried skating again. I was doing much better until I broke my thumb. I decided that skates and I don't go together.

But last night, I broke nothing more than my record! I only really fell once, though I did have a couple close calls. I think I'll attribute my success to the fact that I was holding hands with a cute girl. She was very patient and helpful, which I really appreciated.

Reading Leonard Cohen reviews and interviews (there are hundreds online). I just put my head down and laugh. God help me, it isn't rational, but I absolutely adore this man.

I'm not a stalker, just quietly obssessed. I spend my life on one career, and it looks like now that I've finally gotten the hang of enjoying music, well ... it's just going to be one singer.

(But migosh, how can you not laugh? From a 1993 review:

quote:
With his close-cropped gray hair, his large features and his lined face, Mr. Cohen looked something like a singing Easter Island head. He introduced many songs by gravely intoning some lyrics as poetry, and he usually sang while standing nearly motionless, eyes closed, his face a mask of penitence that only occasionally showed a smirk.

For Mr. Cohen, the concert is a somber ritual, not to be broken even by obstreperous audiences -- "Thank you for your incoherent screaming," he said calmly after one outburst -- and he ended his Paramount show with a biblical benediction ...

Screamingly funny. Yes, a singing Easter Island head, and yes, utterly beautiful. And yes, calmly, with great dignity, "Thank you for your incoherent screaming." Thank you all.

Good heavens, he is a riot.)

My son put his arms around my neck and said "I love you mama."

The speech therapist for the county told me neither one of the twins qualified for services, in fact they were scoring way above averages now. They've come a long way, since this time last year they were both six months behind.

While we were at the meeting Daniel kept picking up puzzle pieces and naming the shapes and colors, "This blue oval Mama? This red circle?" The kindergarten teacher said she had quite a few students who couldn't recognize the difference between ovals and circles and squares and rectangles. She was most impressed. I felt like a good Mom. I didn't talk to him because I was always excluded from things. It created thunderstorms in my eyes for 2 whole nights and made me miserable. I would confide in others willing to know only to receive their pity. I hated it.. I just wanted to find his friendship with me again..

I was thrilled that I am, in fact, not totally surrounded by fearful insecure people. Just that fearful, insecure people are a lot louder than reasonable, well-rounded people.

That sounded awfully negiative, and cynical. I deserve to be, though. My week has been terrible, lemons into lemonade, I guess. [Smile]

This is fairly trivial, but it made me very happy today that the weather report says it won't be quite so hot the next couple of days. It was 100 degrees yesterday, and 98 or 99 today. It's way too early for that nonsense. Especially since I am without air conditioner or swamp cooler - have to make do with a couple of fans and lots of trips to the library. (Of course, I don't mind so much when my P. G. & E. bill is only twenty-five or thirty dollars a month when everyone else's is in the $150 to $200 range because they run their a.c. day and night. I woke up at 7:30 AM on a Saturday, went on a hike, it was perfect weather, we got rained and hailed on, I had the most delicious hummus I've ever tasted (but of course everything tastes better in the mountains), I called one of my friends on a cell phone from the top of this big hike with an awesome view, I am muddy and sore and exhausted. Life is good [Smile] and the best part, I'm gonna go take a bubble bath and then take a nap! yay!! [Big Grin]

I was actually in a pretty crappy mood today and decided to go to the city in order to return some overdue books at the library. Upon reaching my destination, the library decided to be closed this memorial day weekend and thus I was left with nothing to do and an extremely large and heavy bag o' books. So I went shopping, found a perfect black tank and a lovely pair of linen pants and my day turned right up again. [Big Grin]

This wasn't today but it still made me happy; I went to prom on Saturday with a friend of mine and had a blast! Then on Sunday I went to see the Matrix: Reloaded which was good so yeah, I'm happy!

Jane X!!!! I've been trying to find someone to talk to about the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant! I've been asking all my friends if they've read it and they all say no. Now I see you have! That makes me very happy.

I just finished The Illearth War last night. Started on the Power that Preserves. It's so sad! I don't know if I can bear it. I'm being overmastered by this destroyer who uses every good hope, every saving impulse, to trap people into despair! Save me!

When Thomas raped Lena in the first book, I almost put it down and didn't go on. It's so dark! He's so bitter and angry! How can he ever redeem himself from that? The only thing that kept me going was the promise of the giant who laughed, and the fact that Skyweir took his name from there.

I drove to Austin this weekend to go the wedding reception of an old friend of mine. She married a guy from Texas (which I thought was very clever), and so I could go. When I got there, we did the squeal and run thing, and she hugged for almost a whole minute. When we finally let go, she was crying, she was so happy to see me.

Bear hugs and tears of joy! Now THAT'S a welcome!

Posted by Christy (Member # 4397) on :

ak -- do continue reading! It is dark, but still manages to be heroic at the same time. Very compelling. I enjoyed it when I read it a few years ago. Sadly, while waiting to find copies at the second hand store, I lost track of where I was. I'll have to pick it up again. I think there are three series.

(Explanation: there was a lindy hop swing exchange in Albany two weekends ago, which I went to. There is another in Ottawa from June 28-July 1, which I decided I could not attend due to lack of fundage - the registration fee is US $75. Swing exchanges are weekends of bands, DJs, sometimes classes & competitions, and a lot of "imported" dancers. TONS of fun.)

I just got this email:
quote:
Hello coil,

Maybe you left an indelible impression at the Albany exchange.
Maybe the lindy gods have a crush on you.
Maybe you've died and gone to heaven.
But whatever it is, somebody out there must think you're pretty cool, because you've been registered for the CRex Lindy Hop Exchange! Yes, you heard right. You have been mysteriously and anonymously registered for the entire weekend and housing will be arranged. A cheque (payment in full for your registration) was received last week. So, come celebrate your birthday and graduation canadian lindy-style.

Please reply to this email if you have any questions about your registration.
See you soon!

Oh my goodness.... I just signed up with a new bank, and I'm still reeling! It's a totally free checking account, no fees or paying for checks or anything ever.... and, for signing up for direct deposit, they put $100 in my account!! If I sign up for their (free) bill paying service, they'll put another $10 into my account! Whenever I use my check card, I earn a point for every dollar. At 25,000 points, I get a free round trip ticket anywhere in the US! Just for spending my money the way I do anyhow!

And, to top it off, they handed me a $20 gift certificate on the spot for the supermarket they're located in! That's a big deal for me, since I barely have enough money to eat right now. [Smile] And, when Mark signs up, I'll get a Pyrex serving dish!

Holy cow! How can they do this? I'm totally stunned.

We've got two branches in Ithaca, and it looks like there are about 100 of them in Western NY, especially in the bigger cities like Rochester and Buffalo.

TCTC were probably the most emotionally charged books I have ever read - they made me laugh, cry, scream at certain characters, and even throw the book across the room at one point. When Covenant did the Really Bad Thing in the first book (you might want to take that out of your post, btw, because it could potentially spoil the book for people who haven't read it) I had to put the book down and walk around stewing for a while. But I picked it up again eventually. I couldn't just stop reading. I had to know what was going to happen.

aka, keep reading. Trust me. It doesn't get any easier or any less frustrating, but it is totally, totally worth it.

Paris is so much fun. I have been to all the places you mentioned, plus a couple.

A bit of advice-treasure every moment. I kept a journal while I was there, and it's so much fun going back through it.

While you are there-you simply must visit Le Centre Pompidou! That place is SO awesome. Thier collection of Picasso is so wonderful! AND BETTER YET, THERE'S A (fake) TREE GOING THROUGH THE LOBBY!!! Straight up to the roof some 3 stories up! It's so cool looking!

The Louvre is wonderful-unfortunately, about 1/4 of it was closed down for remodeling (?) while I was in Paris.

Wear walking shoes to Versailles-lots and lots of concrete and rocks all through the gardens.

My hotel was just down the road from Sacre Couer de Montematre-it's quite a hike up all of those steps, but such a beautiful view of all the little shops once you get there!

Have fun! Your having fun will make me happy today! [Big Grin]

(Edit to add two things-1)Isn't the metro so stinky! I am convinced it is the reason why I've heard so many people say that Paris smells like pee! 2)Stay away from drunken Italians, they have a tendency to ask you to kiss them! [Eek!] )

There's always room for improvement, and I can always be a nicer person, but at least I'm not the little brat I was.

I'm happy that the one person from my elementary school with whom I'm still in contact can remind me of this, and I'm happy that she forgives me even though my friends and I were really pretty awful to her back then.

I remembered something today, and I think I really appreciate it more now than when it happened or even when I first realized it.

When my mom first got remarried, we lived with my step-dad's parents for a few months while we waited for our house to close. Right after we moved into our house, his father died. Today we were talking about that time, and it just made me so grateful that I have that connection to my family, because now I am making a more concerted effort to make his family also my family.

Today my day was made by:

1- Taking a walk around my neighborhood at 5 AM with a pair of fake glasses on.
2- Doing power yoga.
3- Writing out a plan for how to get the Web Design and Graphic Arts club off the ground at my highschool.
4- Perfecting the James Bond themesong on my electric guitar.
5- Completing a goal that I had set a very long time ago.
6- Finally buying a copy of Ender's Shadow.

By the way, congrats on the Lasik! [Big Grin]

2- The LAN party.
3- Amka's little girl singing songs and telling jokes just to me while I was crushed by another player.
4- Getting 6 hours of sleep. Funny how some people would die if they only got 6 hours, while I enjoyed it.

This didn't warrant it's own thread, so I'll put it in here. Also serves as a bump I suppose (too many morose threads on the front page, I think everyone needs some of Jon Boy's chicken soup thread.)

I made an A in Finance. Probably the hardest I've worked for any of my Business 'A's. But, that made me very happy, despite I feel a little like I didn't deserve it. But, I'm going to take it, and run. Real fast and real far.

Well, this is a bit late (not today), but the last few days have been pretty good. 2 days ago my girlfriend returned from California and that was wonderful, 2 weeks can seem forever. Yesterday I helped set up the bicycle race I was helping organize, and today we had the bicyle race. I was able to finish with the pack, but somewhere in the back....I was out late last night with my girlfriend, didnt get as much sleep as i should have [Big Grin] , nor did I eat enough . And all in all, I relized that now my life is absolutly wonderful. I know that wasnt true some months ago, and it may not be some months from now, but for the time being, everything is great. Thats was what made me happy.

Seeing my mom smile. I absolutely love that.

Oh yeah, and I had this odd chat. I was online getting ready to this fantasy football draft (I know, Yawn!) in a chat room with other Washington Redskins and (other fans from the NFC East) and one guy from our league decided to chat me up for a bit while we were waiting. He's a Redskin fan that is Egyptian, born and raised. We ended up talking for hours about International soccer, politics and history, great stuff. Not combative or unpleasant, just a nice sharing of perspectives. Great stuff.

Finally, not getting stung by a wasp. I got stung two days ago and that absolutely sucked. I didn't know if it could send me into serious peril (I have a severe allergy for bee stings), and luckily it didn't, but it sure hurt like -------- hell. Bugger stung me twice no less. Anyway trust me, a day without a Wasp sting is a good day.

Smiling this week because: We got an investor and my employment now does not appear to be in immediate peril. They have long term interests that should keep us in good shape for the next five years if we don't mismanage our finances. Further, our pay is going back to normal (they cut everyone to the same salary this month, which for me meant a 40% cut).

Also smiling because my house is filled with the smell of Honey Baked Curried Chicken, dinner for tonight. I hope it tastes as good as it smells. I made enough so it will make fantastic chicken curry sandwiches tomorrow, one of my absolute favorites.

Wow - what a weird time warp, because I'm in that same basement right now, and it's completely furnished and comfortable. Just a year ago we finished hanging sheetrock!

As for today, well I watched my daughter Emily in her first gymnastics class after being moved up. Her coaches promoted her from the Beginner class to intermediate and she was really nervous that she'd be way behind the other girls.

But she held her own. And I talked to the coach afterward and asked if she was going to adapt to the class okay and she said "Emily? Are you kidding? I have to hold her back - she'll be caught up with them in no time."

It's a wonderful thing when your kids just amaze you. Emily is such a darn trooper, and one heckuva athlete. She also, this week, re-took a test. Last week she took it and made a 40/100. The teacher sent the test home to me and asked me to go over the material with Emily. She re-took the test and made 100/100!

She just had problems understanding what they wanted her to do, once I explained it, she did great. She also got A honor roll last term, and student of the month for being so helpful to other kids. [Smile]

Awww, mothertree, I can just imagine your son looking like a fireman. How cute!

What made me happy today: I was hanging out after aikido practice and we were talking about anime and how the characters always yell the name of the attack. Apparently there was some spoof where one character attacked and then the other did the same thing but without yelling it, and the attack did nothing. Then someone suggested that maybe we should do that in practice. I almost died laughing. <anime voice>shomen-uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuchi!</anime voice>

I went through one of those drive through car washes, the kind where you drive in and sit there while the spray hoses work their way all around the car. As usual, the music was set appropriately loud for the experience (The Waterboys "Big Music"). When the soap srayed out all over the car it was MULTICOLORED!!! Excellent!! I must remember to do this again. You see, it doesn't take much....

I can tell you what made me happy yesterday.

Yesterday, I did a tax return for a young couple who are in the process of adopting a beautiful baby girl.

They really had no clue what they could deduct and were terrified of owing the IRS.

To make their fear even greater, the adoption agency called them yesterday morning. They won't finalize the adoption until they are completely paid off.

Well, I was extremely thorough, got them a refund that will just cover what they still owe for the adotion, and once it is final they can get her a SSN, amend their return, and get an extra $2000.

I truly love my job!

Man! This is just my lucky day!

AND....

We had a piece of chorale sheet music we were working on that I needed the accompaniment CD for.

I went to the music store where I bought the sheet music, and they informed me that the CD was no longer available.

Today I checked the music publisher's web site, which also said the CD was unavailable -- So I e-mailed them and pleaded with them that I needed this.

They replied
quote:
We are able to make a copy from a master CD for $29.95 plus shipping if you want to order the CD. Please let me know
as soon as possible.

So I called them, gave them my VISA number, and I should have the CD in a few days! Things are really just going very well for me today! I'm so happy! I need a Mt. Dew!
