Bob mentioned recently that because of the nature of the BB, we may all be having conversations with people who don't exist, except as multiple pseudonyms for the same person. We can all remember several examples of those who do this on purpose, some for evil intent, some not. I myself have a second pseudonym here that I trot out very occasionally, on dune related topics.

So, I thought it would be nice to create a list of verifiably real people. To be real, you need to have been physically met by two or more other hatrackers who can attest to your existence. A list of your witnesses is required. Those able to produce such a list are automatically granted more credibility in the hatrack community. I have decreed it as the lizard king, and thus it is law.

My personal list of witnesses to my existence:

Sarfa
Dean
Perfect Gentleman
AKA
DocMagic
OrsonScottCard
kacard
GeoffCard
Richard Berg
OlavMah
PapaMoose
Olivet
CalebVarns
FlyingCow
Jenny Gardener
Edited to add:
Mr. Flibble
Deirdre
Ralphie
POD

If you should be on my list, and for some reason I have forgotten you, please let me know and I will edit.

I hope this thread helps us keep straight who really exists, and who is just a figment of someone's twisted sociology experiment [Wink] .

Lizard King out

I attended endercon. Do I really have to list every hatracker I've ever met?

Posted by Slash the Berzerker (Member # 556) on :

Well, at least two of them.

Posted by Strider (Member # 1807) on :

But Slash, I've never met ANY of those people in RL.

How do I know that any of you exist?

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

I and my wife and child were probably met by hundreds at Endercon. I am not going to list them here, for they are many. They might even be named Legion, like Geoff's bicycle. In addition to Endercon folk, my existence can also be verified by Slash, OlavMah, Dean, Perfect Gentleman, Jacare (non-Sorridente), and DocMagic. Eddie Whiteshoes theoretically saw me, but did not approach and introduce himself, so I cannot verify his existence.

My hope is that we can create a network of cross verifications. That way, even those who have never met each other can be sure of the others existence through a complex series of associations. I've met papamoose, who met leto, who met you, and so on.

Well, it's probably more fun to list all you people that I have met. The list will make me elite, and I can use it to get into hoity toity restraunts that require a list of who's who to get in.

Jeni, Leto, Papa Moose, Mama Squirrel, Ladyday, Katharina, Pod, Jaiden, Aretee, Patrick, Zevlag, Marce, Orson Card, Kcard, Geoffery Card, Ronin, Calvinmaker, Ela, JaneX, Shlomo, Irami, Amka, Chris Kidd, Ladydove, Analog Kid, Theca, Miro. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

A pic does not mean you are for real. How do we know that that is really a pic of you. It looked an awful lot like Harrison Ford or Cindy Crawford. You have to actually meet another member.

What happens if someone with several names starts having each name verify that the others exist?

Well, I'm kinda, sorta halfway there - I was at LosCon the year OSC was GoH. Not that he would remember, I was the one in the idea generation panel who kept trying to turn the story we were generating ideas for into a romance. He also signed my copy of Enchantment. But since he wouldn't remember either of those encounters, they probably don't count.

Oh, well. If I can make it to the Southern California BBQ on the 20th, I should have my bona fides to make the list.

I know this doesn't count, but if we could count e-mails, I've corresponded with Belle when I read her play for her church about Daniel, and I've corresponded with enjeeo, khavanon, and others over on the Writer's Workshop side.

I know I'm real - but I want to be REAL, too.

Porcelain Girl
OrsonScottCard
kacard
John Keats (aka Caleb Varns)
Edit: Emily Card (though I've never seen her post here, and I sent her an email she never responded to... probably thinks I'm a stalker. [Eek!] )

I don't think I've left out anyone, though that's entirely possible. Then again, I met every one of these people before I came to hatrack. [Big Grin] I have not met a single jatrequero since I became one myself.

Okay, wait... I did hang out with Olivet after "FlyingCow" was born... but I met her beforehand, so that doesn't really count. I should say I haven't met any more jatrequeros since becoming one.

Yep! I'm up here north of you in Huntsville. I haven't been around much since 2001 because we opened our own business late in 2000 and it's taking ALL of my time. It's an internet based company so its a 24/7 commitment cause we get customers worldwide.

Since Jeni emailed me when Khav listed me on the Historical Archive thread, I've been checking back at Hatrack whenever I can.

Since I know that if anyone knows you will know, I'll ask you. How is everyone I remember as real?

Posted by ak (Member # 90) on :

KEGE: of the people on your list TomDavidson, Slash (whatever did happen about your sister in law?), and Hobbes are still here. dean and Mikey live with me now (though they don't hatrack anymore) and they are doing okay though finding the transition to adulthood harder than perhaps they expected.

annie and JohnHansen recently made a reappearance as you have. It's good to see them again.

brettly, PieMan, MOTO, and userAnnie have disappeared and we miss them! I get nostalgic for people when I stop and remember them. There have been so many great hatrackers over the years! But I guess they have lives now and stuff, so maybe this is a good thing for them... but still it is awfully inconsiderate, I think, for them to just run away and leave bereft those of us who don't. Maybe I will come back with Xavier2 sometime later this year.

AKA,

How in the world did dean and Mikey come to be living with you in Birmingham? I'm astonished and consumed with curiosity. The last I recall I was terribly worried about dean's safety b/c she was working a night job and waiting for a bus in Los Angeles? Did I just make all that up or did they move? Their situation seemed like a tragic story about to happen - and now they live with you?! I am awed and so impressed that my jaw dropped when I read your post. I was WAY underestimating you when I gave you kudos for saving lost animals!!! WOW [Embarrassed]

Slash...Yes, I was at OSC's keynote speech at LosCon. It would have been so cool to meet you. I was sitting on the left side of the room in about the third or fourth row, near the aisle, as I recall. I can't remember if I was dressed as a civilian or if I had my Ren costume on - I know I had it with me that year. My badge that year said that I was Lady Christiana. It's a long story that has to do with the two friends I was with that year and our alternate personalities as the Wicked Ladies - although we are really quite nice most of the time (and as long as no one crosses us). [Wink]

Posted by Slash the Berzerker (Member # 556) on :

My badge said Slash.

Weird, that.

LosCon had one highlight of my life. I got to hang out outside with OSC and Harry Knowles of AICN and talk movies for about half an hour.

I also got to chat with Larry Niven about TV shows made from his stories, and with Barbara Hambly about dragons. I talked to Bob Eggleton for awhile and found out we are both huge Michael Whelan fans.

It was also the first time I met Olavmah and Geoff Card in person, and the first time I talked to Kristine Card. She was very nice, even after I called her Kathy. [Smile]

My only regret, is that a guy basically attacked OSC in the hallway, and I didn't realize it was happening until it was over. I missed my chance to play paladin for OSC, and it bothers me to this day. I'm fairly sure I could have backed that guy away (he was dressed in a wizard outfit [Roll Eyes] ) without *much* violence. [Wink]

Posted by littlemissattitude (Member # 4514) on :

I didn't know anything about anyone attacking OSC at LosCon. [Eek!] But the guy in the wizard costume sounds awfully familiar. Did he have really thick, black-framed glasses? If it's who I'm thinking about, he is there every year, and I personally find him kind of scary.

The thing that's cool about LosCon is that even though there are a sizeable number of people who attend every year, it still seems quite intimate. There are opportunities to interact with the writers and artists there that I imagine aren't available at a lot of cons. The majority of the writers, especially, don't seem to try to isolate themselves to a huge extent. I've come to the conclusion that this is at least partly due to the fact that so many of them are local and actually members of LASFA (Los Angeles Science Fantasy Association, the group that puts LosCon on and I think the oldest continually operating SF fan group in the world, for those of you out of the area) and so feel that they are among friends. Many of them don't just appear for panels and talks and then disappear again; they will hang out and talk to attendees. I also like that it is a writers and artists con, and not a media con. It's also cool that there are fairly large contingents there from Cal Tech and JPL, and so the science panels are usually very good.

KEGE, they wanted to start their lives together and needed a way to do that. Cost of living is much lower in Alabama and jobs more plentiful. I had a spare room which Saudade and Andrei very kindly helped me clear to get ready for them. <i.e. Saudade cracked the whip and put us to work.> So we decided they should come live here to start their grown up lives together. They moved in last July and then we moved into a new bigger house in January.

It took them far longer to find work than we thought, and still only Deany has a job and it's just in a bookstore so no benefits which really terrifies me. No medical insurance and no way to save for tuition, etc.

Hopefully Mikey will find one soon so they can afford to live. Also Deany may get promoted soon we hope but it's doubtful whether the promotion will bring benefits or a substantial raise. I sure hope so.

The cat families merged fairly well with only one casualty, really. My cat Drive By has never adjusted (she was feral as a kitten) and now hides terrified in my room most of the time. Poor Drive By. I hate it that she is unhappy.

Deany and Mikey adopted another cat from Deany's mom (she flew her home to get it) since they moved in and Heidi is very sweet and we love her a lot. (Well, all of us but Drive By and Tiki (Dean's cat who is also afraid of everyone).)

They have yet to get married legally, though they are actually married in truth. I wish very much at least one if not both of them could get a good job with benefits, they could get married, and Mikey could get his drivers license, but all these things are taking far longer than we ever expected.

Birmingham would be pretty good if we were at that restaurant with the weird name, something like the Purple Onion? I just remember it's painted purple and has gyros.

Of course, if we held it in lets say, Huntsville, we could all hold hands and encircle the life sized Saturn rocket at the Space Center - now wouldn't that make a pretty picture! I even have my daughter's spacecamp jumpsuit that I could wear and pretend that I was an astronaut getting aboard the space shuttle.

Wow, what a great thread I've been missing! I read it right when Slash started it, and though "well, nobody's met me", and hadn't bothered to check in again until just now.

I'd always wondered what the details were of dean and moonflower's move; nice to have some of those details filled in. If I'm ever hurt and alone, I know exactly where I'm going to head. Well, actually I don't know the geographical location, but I'll bet I'll be able to get directions.

I remember pYx; I always liked her, and enjoyed her irreverent style, until she insulted Tom's wife and aka both. Insulting Tom's wife, especially when she didn't participate on the board, seemed bizarre, but insulting aka, of all people, led me to believe that while she was quick witted and funny, she actually wasn't kind. People grow, though, and she was pretty young. Whatever happened to her, EG?

I've met Lissande, but I doubt her realness. I mean, right now she lives in the Czech Republic which, as we all know, is a communist fantasy. So by following an irrefutable chain of logic (trust me on this one), I have come to the conclusion that I, also, may not exist.

That's a kicker.

I haven't met anyone from Hatrack that I know of, so I guess I don't exist. That is too bad because (unavoidable Dilbert refrence) "existing is pretty much all I do".
Hey if it will help I can start making up people who don't exist, then they can verify that I exist, and that each other exist.

Okay I'm not going to do that, I'm content to be counted among those who do not count, but why wouldn't that work?

My mother does not consider any of you real. Saudade and Andrei she thinks are real. The rest of you are not real people at all to her. Not just real people she hasn't met yet, but people who in fact do not exist.

Has anyone found a way to successfully convince a non-online person (e.g. a parent) that people you've known for a long time online and have talked to on the phone for hours and so on are not any more likely to be lying to you than people you know in real life? That their status as real people is the same?

Showing her counterexamples (in the persons of Saudade and Andrei) hasn't had any effect. Acquainting her over a period of time with the people by relating anecdotes hasn't either. To her I think Saudade and Andrei weren't real until I met them in real life (with no explanation for how that could have come about) and then after that they were real. The anecdotes she dismisses because they aren't about real people. <laughs>

Though, on the side of my existence, I DO have it that there couldn't be two such personalities in all the world.

Plus, I'm pushing the sex appeal legal limit with just this personality. No way I could have more than one.

When I met Icarus and Cor we were wandering around looking at animals at Gatorland, where we encountered a *very* large snake in an open doghouse. My son wanted to know if it was real, and my husband suggested that the best way to find out would be to poke it in the eye with his finger. (He was joking, I think, and no, the snake wasn't real.) Cor and I looked at each other and she said something like, "Okay, Jen, we have to poke you in the eye to make sure you're real." [Smile]

The question as to what it takes to be considered real keeps coming up. Now, I've had this argument with a number of people who claim that you have to be connected to Slash, or to someone who was at the first Hatrack picnic way back when, but as it is clearly stated (by royal decree, no less) in the first post of this thread, all it takes is having met two other Hatrackers.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

YAY!

I think it should have to be Hatrackers who've been already verified, but that's just my opinion, not the law.

For instance, you can't get your two neighbors to post once and say you've met two, it would have to be two that have already met two OTHER previously verified rackers apiece (and those would also have to have met two others, etc.)

But we can do it Slashy's way.

I met Bob, martha, Kale, and Beca at Bob's visit to Boston this spring.

I think the point of "real" is that you have to have met people who can trace it back to some of the old-timers here who all have met IRL.

If the only people you have been seen by are your friends who post here, but none of you have ever met anyone outside of the clump, then you are not real.

Bob, Mack, Kama, and T_Smith have all seen/been seen by many of the originals, which makes everyone who was at the WMASS picnic real. And in turn, now that we are real we can confer that status to anyone we can seen IRL.

This realness thing needs to be better defined. I think I must have said this before on another thread. Just like for a mathematical system we need axioms and provable theorems, precision and repeatability. So here is the actual, mathematical definition of reality.

All reality originally derives from the very first hatrack picnic in 2000 in Los Angeles, which Slashy thought up and several of us hosted. The attendees there were Slash, Richard Berg, Brian Worth, sarfa, Dean, Moonflower, Jacob Porter, and myself. All subsequent realness must derive from members of this group. They subsequently had other gatherings in SoCal which included the Moose family, for instance, at which they gained their reality, to pass along to all of Endercon. (OSC wasn't even real until Endercon. <laughs> No wait, he met Slash before that at some LA signing when Geoff and Olavmah were there, that's right!) The writer's boot camp thing gave many more people reality including Olivet and Flying Cow. Saudade and Andrei got their reality from me. Everyone else who's real seems to be linked back through some Endercon attendee or another.

This system is much better defined than the one Slash proposed, because it rejects clumps with no connection to the main body of the group. Those may be given provisional reality status, of course, before such time as a link to actual reality is established, but one must always keep in mind the tenative nature of such a state.

Slashy pointed out to me on AIM how the very first hatrack picnic was his idea, and how he was the one who got everyone started going into chat via the "we are chatting now" thread, how he was the first to be my high priest (though he mostly sacrificed virgins... I think he just really liked sacrificing virgins) and how he originated many other memes and traditions that make this place so great. "I am the rock upon which your church is founded," he said.

So, I'd like to pause here and just have a moment of awed silence for all the Slashyness we still have with us, and by which was are so blessed day by day. And to add a prayer that our slashiness remain with us ever undimmed, and that one millennial day, perhaps ages and ages hence, we might arise from the shining waters of sleep to discover that once again the universe has turned and we can enjoy a new advent of Slashy himself among us in all his greatness.

I don't think so.....

If, under your plan, OSC wasn't real until he connected with you......then I don't think it works at all!

Even Slash needed a site to meet people ot, and we have this site due to OSC.

The first clump would therefore be his family....

Ok I need a jury decision on this:

I'm going to go to the Science and Industry Museum in a few weeks with Goody Scrivener. I'm thinking xnera might want to come, but if she doesn't and Steve decides to come along and he meets Goody, would that make Goody real? While Steve isn't actually a hatracker, he's met enough to be real by the original standard.

What do you think?

Gee, someone's been paying attention. [Angst] Yeah, in theory, they'll probably let him have a visa into Canada now, providing we actually translate our marriage certificate into English, which we haven't done yet, and provide it to the Canadian High Commission. But then you're assuming that I want to go back to Canada. Well, for a visit, sure, but definitely not to stay. I like it here. Although I'd be willing to live in other countries, too. Maybe Thailand, or Belize, or Algeria, or Morocco, or Peru, or Chile, or Egypt, or Kuwait, or Dubai, or . . .

Tourism is happening again in Sri Lanka. Not in the coastal areas so much because there's a lot of reconstruction work to be done, but in Colombo and the centre of the country and the cultural triangle, it's all back to normal. So yes, y'all can come for LankaCon anytime! Party on! [The Wave]

I've met only OSC and Mrs K. She was the one to prod me out and actually be a person instead of a shadow here.

I've yet to attend any Cons.. altho I would love to do that... I wonder if there's any Enderverse/OSC Meetups nearby?

For the record, I've lived only an hour or two (at the most) from the Cards since 1984. (I think.. when did OSC set up shop in Gbo?) Even when I enlisted, I still ended right back to being an hour or so from the Cards.. only in the opposite direction [Roll Eyes] So anyhow.. still I wonder about those OSC Meetups

Actually, no. I wasn't yet a Hatracker at EnderCon, though I did see him do the Thor sketch.

I just took Frisco's list and took off a few people and put on a few people. [Smile] I figured since we were both at KamaCon and the wedding they'd have a lot of overlap, and they did. . .

[Smile] I'm sure he won't give me a straight answer, and I find him interesting.
Also, I don't remember if I ever told you before but I love your name. If you look on the HP questions thread I mentioned wanting to live in you!

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Since we have 3 Hatrackers living in our house, anyone from Hatrack-- or who joins later-- who comes over to visit is now instantly real. Wow. Scary! That also applies to all the married couples and roommates and everything else on Hatrack, of course. But I just realized it.

I think it take meeting two already real people to make you real. Otherwise you could just have multiple personalities [Wink]

I'm not sure but i think that after this last weekend i will go down as fastest to become real registered hatracker. With only 2 posts to my name I am real.

Heres my list

Kama
Choobak
Corwin

Steve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

Replace "Corwin" with "pepinaso"/"Steve" in pepinaso's list, and you have mine.

Oh, and hi, Steve! I'm glad you and kat arrived ok. I'm not sure about the "fastest to become real" part... Depends on how you define the rules for becoming real, for example if you already met two real hatrackers when you sign up here you're already real. Complicated, huh? [Big Grin] Anyway, you're real, that's what matters! [Smile]

Posted by pepinaso (Member # 8639) on :

What i mean by fastest is from the time that i registered to the time that i met other hatrackers was less than 24 hours. i say thats preety good.

hi Kama!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

We've had several people be real the instant they signed up, actually. But you might be the fastest to become real without already having met two real Hatrackers prior to joining.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

But Steve, you were already real before you signed up, just required the signing up part. Don't I remember reading you met Beverly at a book signing? If so, I'm pretty sure you know Kat right, since she's your sister and went with you to Spain, so you must (unless there are some weird issues). Which makes you real before you met Corwin, Choobak, Kama, or any others.

I am having a hard time trying to figure out what that statement means, exactly. [Razz]

If breyerchic's right, then Steve joins the ranks of people who became real immediately after joining.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Breyerchic is correct, so he also gets to add beverly and MattB to his list of Hatrackers he has met.

That's what I thought. I'm also on that list, having met fugu, raia, blacwolve, kyrie, meltingsnowman, and stryker by registration, fugu had been to wenchcon2, blacwolve and meltingsnowman had been to a signing with aj, celia, happycamper, and hobbes, as well as met osc, and somehow msquared.

Hey, I've got a question.

There are three currently Real Jatraquero/as in this household. When the new baby is born, is s/he Instantly Real as soon as s/he has a screenname? [Big Grin]

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

yes actually, I bet if you registered it a name, pre birth, it'd be real, pre birth, though I'm not sure, you'd probably need to ask Slash. But at least by birth, it's real. Like, if Enigmatic were to have a girlfriend that wasn't on hatrack, if she met his mother or sister, and registered, she'd be real (sorry to use him as an example, but it worked in my head).

Heck, pretty soon it'll even be kicking me.

But I think I'll wait until it's born to declare it "Real".

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

heh, yeah having a true birth name might be good for being real, even if no one else knows it.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I think you have to actually post on Hatrack before you can be real, though. Merely having a screenname shouldn't cut it.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

so that means an unborn child can't post, but a newborn can? I think that's where it gets hard.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

No, it means you're not real until you're posting under your screenname.

In other words, just because both parents are Real and they post under their child's screenname doesn't make the child real.

Just my take on Tom's statement.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

But sophie's real, and she's tom's kid, and I think christy posted as her.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

Not according to Tom's definition.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Maybe, but the way I took Tom's definition, isn't the way you took it, babies "posting" counts, if there is a post, at least that's how it's been discussed before. He said it actually has to have posts, just having it registered doesn't count.

Posted by Enigmatic (Member # 7785) on :

From the first post in this thread:
quote:
Bob mentioned recently that because of the nature of the BB, we may all be having conversations with people who don't exist, except as multiple pseudonyms for the same person.
If the original intent was to verify that a screenname was not actually a different Hatracker posting under an alternative name, I don't think that parents posting as their babies would make the babies Real. That's pretty clearly an alt until such time as the child can type and takes over the screenname.

On the other hand, if the point is just to attest that a person actually exists, the baby would still be real if two other Hatrackers (presumably the parents) had met him/her, whether the baby is responsible for any posts or not.

Well, I suppose I'd better post here to "officialize" my "realness." I have met Will B., who is in my writing popular fiction class, and Scott Card, who teaches my writing popular fiction class.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

Is Will B. "Real"?

It's not enough to merely meet two Hatrackers, you have to meet two "real" hatrackers. In other words, every "real" hatracker is connected to every other "real" hatracker.

Real hatrackers cannot exist in a vacuum.

pH is at least half real! I've met her. Although I'm not sure if that counts because I may not be real. I've only otherwise met Hatrackers who aren't around anymore.

Posted by Ophelia (Member # 653) on :

pH has been real for awhile.

And it's not how recently the old jatraqueros were around, it's whether or not they themselves were real. Slash doesn't post here anymore, and he's the root of all the real.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I have been lurking for awhile and just joined this morning. Here's my question. Why does it matter if someone is "real" if they are contributing in a positive/interesting/valuable way? Since I'm a newbie, I don't know when (if ever) I will meet anyone, as "real" life might not permit that but I wouldn't want to be discounted right off the bat.

(A few of my posts under my old name still survive, though.)

Kate and I went to lunch over the weekend so I could deliver Girl Scout cookies. We aren't sure if she's completely real, though, because although she's also met with pH, we don't know if the Hatrackers conferring reality must themselves be real (which I certainly am) and whether pH has attained reality.

By the way, Kate is a lovely and attractive lady and we had a great time together. [Smile]

Real only applies to Hatrack, at least in this sense.

So even if you and your 30 closest friends had your own message board, it wouldn't make you any more 'real' here. So to speak.

<---- still not real.

I was in Durango last May. A long time ago, to be sure, but I was there. There's a Super Walmart if my memory serves. Perhaps we saw each other! Though I'd wager conversation is necessary to establish Realness.

Knowing that you're talking to a real hatracker seems nessesary to me. Though it's ok if they aren't real, and go meet other reals later, If I remember correctly.

I feel sort of sad because I didn't get to celebrate a moment of becoming real. Reality as a concept post-dated my first hatrack meetings. We used to call hatrack gatherings "hatrack picnics" back in the ancient days of which I speak.

My list:
Dean
Mikey
Slash
sarfa
Jacob Porter
Brian Worth
Richard Berg
Saudade
Andrei
Pod
Mackillian
BunnV
kaioshin00
Grisha

Most of those don't post anymore.

People I have known long enough and talked to enough on the phone that I have absolutely no doubts of their reality, and find it hard to remember that I've not yet met them in person.

Amira
Toretha
Black Fox
Jaiden
Pixie

Probably more that I've forgotten, so I apologize in advance. My memory sucks.

Most of these post rarely nowadays or not at all. I wonder if my reality can lapse if I don't keep forming new hatrack connections?

For all those interested, Celaeno is now real!

She's previously met KetchupPrinceConsort, and she just hung out with human_2.0 & I (and my boyfriend) up in San Francisco. We had a good time eating seafood in Chinatown, then driving around, enjoying the night lights and the big hills.

Now she has, like, 12 hours to pack for Europe. [Big Grin]

I think that we decided that it didn't, since anybody could say that they'd met the Cards at a signing or whathaveyou, and there was no real way to verify such claims one way or the other (the Card's could verify it, assuming that the person stood out enough to be distinct from the thousands of other fans they'd meet in the course of a signing, but they aren't frequent enough participants in the forums for them to be relied upon to do so).

Ok, I took ElJay's suggestion. Except it was hard to remember whether I had actually met a couple people, or just spoken to them so much online that I think I have! I cannot emphasize enough how incredibly difficult it was to keep track of the forum names and keep them associated with the real ones, especially since Papa & Mama managed to refer to their three kids almost exclusively by forum names.

It's also really fun to watch the reaction of passers-by at a mother referring to her child as "superstation." [Big Grin]

Hmmm -- was that the Seattle Center convention? 'Cause both my son and I was there and we met you, along with Narnia, JNSB . . . I think romanylass and her delightful children left before we hit the convention . . . or am I totally lost and thinking of a different Scott altogether? At any rate, Narnia, JNSB, romany and clan, and Nathan and myself had a fine time at the Seattle Science Center and then met someone at a conference . . . *puzzled*

well, Noemon, here's the problem: I don't have a car on campus, as I'm only a freshie. However, starting Wednesday, I'll be home in Springboro for a week and a half for Spring Break. So there's a possibility of going to PF CHang's or Bravo by the Dayton Mall, if you're interested.

Sunrise Cafe in Yellow Springs? I may have been there... I'm not entirely sure though. I went to this one place with my family that had their own little store next door where I bought the msot AMAZING tea... but I'm not sure of the name of it.

I'd say traditional Indian food is mostly vegetarian. If you haven't had a lot of adventures in food from different cultures, you might want to have Noemon guide you with regard to spices (i.e., making sure you have at least one thing to eat that tastes somewhat familiar).

Edited to add: If you eat cheese, palak paneer might be a good choice. It has a spinach base, and even people who don't like Western-style cooked spinach often like it.

You would probably like the various forms of naan bread to be tasty. It's kind of like a puffed pita. Samosas are easy on a virgin palate, too: fried dough with a filling (usually) of potatoes and peas, sometimes chickpeas as well. Dal is a thick soup made with a bean or legume product such as lentils or chickpeas. There often are also grilled vegetable dishes (either on kabobs or on a hot iron plate, similar to a fajita filling).

Don't be afraid to try the new spices and flavors, though. Some people take to them right away, while for some it is a more gradual process to come to enjoy them. My mother was a very Midwestern cook who had a deep and abiding distrust of the "funny-tasting food" from other cultures; for us, stuffed green peppers with so-called Spanish rice was quite exotic. However, I have come to adore curries, sushi, Mongolian barbeque, dim sum, and all sorts of things which would have shocked and appalled her. [Smile]

Especially if it's Southern Indian (less so if it's Northern).

What CT and rivka said.

I know that Amar India has some vegetarian dishes. Maharaja of India, which is up by the Fairfield Commons mall, is a southern Indian place and has a much larger selection of vegetarian stuff, as well as some vegan options as well.

If we do have Indian I'll be glad to help you navigate the menu to find stuff that will appeal, but if you'd prefer to go somewhere else that's cool too.

Amar India sounds cool. I'm actually home now, but I'm busy this weekend. However, if there's a weekday next week, or possibly next saturday, that you'd want to meet, I'm up for it.

I am really sorry to sully this fun thread with refrences to the current petty (and, I suspect, ultitmatly transitory) debate. I suspect this post will just seem weird six months from now when this arguement has gone away, and this thread is still going strong, as people find joy in the way our community grows and affects our real lives.

But Dag, for this thread to be anything like yours it would have to be called, "PLEDGE TO GO OUT RIGHT NOW AND HUNT DOWN A BUNCH OF HATRACKERS TO MEET SO WE CAN DECIDE WHETHER WE WANT TO TALK TO YOU."

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Perhaps you would care to explain the difference between actively soliciting evidence that someone is not an alt and my idea. Both unannounced alts and thread deletion are permitted activities that are both frowned on and that people want to know about before posting.

Alright, I'll give it a shot.

But the prerequisite is, you got to read the post I made explaining why I made the sneeches comment, and why it was so easy to see that thread in a negative way.

It's my first post on this page.

Seriously, go read it again. Even if you think you remember it.

Great.

Okay, so what's the difference between that thread and this thread?

1. This thread was started by Slash. It's hard to really put into words why that makes a difference, but it does. This thread started out with the context of everything else he was doing on Hatrack at the time, and that put it in a place where nobody really saw it as an attack.

Or, if they did, it was the same part of the general attack that Slash, being a lizard king, always tended to make on everybody, meaning that it was just as possible that this thread was made to attack the people who were calling out alts as it was that he was attacking people who used alts.

At any level, when the idea was brought up it did not feel retaliatiory, it did not feel like it was picking on anyone, and it did not feel like it was trying to distance anyone from anything.

It was just a fun idea for a thread.

Nobody was really being excluded here. The person with the most alts on hatrack could have joined. The only people excluded were, well, not really "people" at all.

2. This thread is not worded negatively. It does not say The Thread For People Who Are Above Using Alts or anything like that. Many of the "Real" hatrackers here use alts. Slash acknowledged using alts in the thread topic.

In your thread, by specifically making the thread title negative (Basically saying, "We're the people above a certain kind of behavior"), it feels more like it's about distancing yourself from different people than about acknowledging a common bond.

This thread, by wording it positively, is able to pass itself off as being more about shared bonds than about separation from "lesser" others a little more easily.

3. Regardless of anybody's intent when a thread gets started, once it's released into the ether, a thread takes on a life of its own. This one has proven, over time, to have become a very positive thing in the world of the Hatrack forums. It's become more about a right of passage as people become a stronger part of the community than it is about figuring out who those alts are so that we can remain suspicious of them.

Really, I don't think anybody's going to treat BlackBlade any differently now than they did before he got on this list. Nobody's thinking, "Oh, I can finally allay my suspicion that BlackBlade is just an alt for cheirosdeender."

Sure, Slash said anyone who did it would "automatically granted more credibility in the hatrack community," but he did it by his authority as "lizard king," meaning the worst that might have happened if someone had failed to grant such credibility is that they would have been eaten by him.

Meaning this was all in fun.

And quite frankly, if anybody wanted on this list, they could just make up a bunch of alts, pretend they all lived in Antartica, post a thread about PenguinCon, pretend to hold it, and then declare all their alts real.

This thread isn't really about that.

There was no enforcement declared, no position put in place for "People who pretended to be real but turned out not to be" to be edited in, so everybody would eventually know who to shun.

Everybody can become real, if they care to, and are willing to go where the closest hatrackers are. The only requirement for getting into this club, basically, is wanting to be in it bad enough to do that.

Your thread is basically, "Here is where you can find the trustworthy Hatrackers," and then makes specific decsions about what constitutes trustworthy that would be debated by some hatrackers.

This thread makes no such moral judgements. All it does is acknowledge existance.

Nobody would read this thread and come away thinking Slash or anybody who played along in the game didn't like them. They'd know that if they ever cared to, they could eventually join it.

I mean, even the name of the thread is tounge in cheek. "Real" hatrackers. Everybody's real!

Your thread was nothing like this. Your thread was very official. Your thread contained a punishment (a list ready to be edited) for violation. There was nothing "fun," "tounge in cheek," or anything approaching slash's aknowledgement of having engaged in the use of ALTs himself.

Your thread, quite frankly, felt mean, serious, and judgemental.

doc wasn't the one who brought it over here. He was responding to dag's post further up this page about "sneeches" - which dag brought over here from the other thread.

Just saying.

Oh. Didn't know that. Thanks, Ela. I'd read about sneeches, but I've been sick for the last week, so I don't know if it's just my brain or what, but I really just don't get what it's about or where it originated.

ETA: So, the significance of it went over my head, is what I'm trying to say.

Still, does the infection have to spread? Can't it stay restricted to the five or ten already existing threads about thread deletion?

Quick question. I met three Hatrackers back in April. They were:
Amanecer
pfresh85
vonk

All of us were first time Hatrack people meeters. Are we real yet?

I know I wouldn't have this problem if I met KQ and Boon at the little TulCon they had. Maybe next time.

No, they had none of them met anyone real before, right? You have to meet previously real people to become real. Although some subscribe to the theory of retroactive realness, so if one of them became real thereafter some would say they are then all real.

Posted by docmagik (Member # 1131) on :

Wow, you're right. I just went back and re-read the thread and around page 6 they changed the definition.

Sorry, brojack. Never mind.

This is now the "Six Degrees of Separation From Slash" thread.

[Wink]

docmagick, let's be clear here. The accusation made was that my thread was equivalent to ""PLEDGE TO GO OUT RIGHT NOW AND HUNT DOWN A BUNCH OF HATRACKERS TO MEET SO WE CAN DECIDE WHETHER WE WANT TO TALK TO YOU."

quote:
This thread was started by Slash. It's hard to really put into words why that makes a difference, but it does. This thread started out with the context of everything else he was doing on Hatrack at the time, and that put it in a place where nobody really saw it as an attack.
If you can't put it into words, then you've hardly even attempted to explain it to me. In-group acceptance of behavior by another, with the only attempt to explain why this matters amounting to "because everyone knew it was OK" is a lot more star-belly sneechlike than anything I've done.

quote:
In your thread, by specifically making the thread title negative (Basically saying, "We're the people above a certain kind of behavior"), it feels more like it's about distancing yourself from different people than about acknowledging a common bond.
Again, that's what YOU'RE bringing to this. It's a group of people banding together based on a common characteristic.

quote:
This thread is not worded negatively. It does not say The Thread For People Who Are Above Using Alts or anything like that. Many of the "Real" hatrackers here use alts. Slash acknowledged using alts in the thread topic.
Every time you reword what I said, you add your own value judgment to it. Your attacks can't stand on their own - you have to make up stuff that I said to even get them off the ground. The concept of "above" is something YOU'VE added to this, not me.

Further, I didn't say those people had a problem with alts. I said they had a problem with unannounced alts - the specific behavior that being "real" targets.

Let's look at the opening post again: "To be real, you need to have been physically met by two or more other hatrackers who can attest to your existence. A list of your witnesses is required. Those able to produce such a list are automatically granted more credibility in the hatrack community. I have decreed it as the lizard king, and thus it is law."

You might think the "lizard king" thing makes it somehow different than what I did, but your relying on "the worst that might have happened if someone had failed to grant such credibility is that they would have been eaten by him."

Whereas my thread had no consequences for anyone EXCEPT THOSE WHO PUBLICLY BREAK THEIR WORD. Not people who choose not to participate. Not people who insist on deleting threads. Just those who break their word.

quote:
And quite frankly, if anybody wanted on this list, they could just make up a bunch of alts, pretend they all lived in Antartica, post a thread about PenguinCon, pretend to hold it, and then declare all their alts real.
No, they couldn't.

quote:
Everybody can become real, if they care to, and are willing to go where the closest hatrackers are. The only requirement for getting into this club, basically, is wanting to be in it bad enough to do that.
The only requirement to being in my "club" (I'll use y our loaded word for clarity) is to promise not to delete others' words. That's it. Anyone can join.

quote:
Your thread is basically, "Here is where you can find the trustworthy Hatrackers," and then makes specific decsions about what constitutes trustworthy that would be debated by some hatrackers.
For the last time: NO IT DOES NOT!!!! It says here is where you can find the people who have voluntarily chosen to refrain from exercising a particular power.

Quite frankly, all this does is confirm my original impression that the reason you see this so negatively is YOUR distrust of others.

I think of being "real" as being more about celebrating the fact that you met some cool people from the site. There really isn't much status involved with it, except that you'll probably be closer to the people you meet than ones you haven't. Technically, to be real, there must be a chain linking you back to Slash, since he started the thread.

In my opinion, Dagonee, people were being too hard on you in the thread you started. However, your comment on this thread was out of line. I'd really appreciate it if you'd avoid spreading the hostility to other threads.
