Break a leg. But don't actually break a leg. I know someone who pulled a muscle badly in a show and did the next two shows (there were only three) on crutches. It was confusing because one person was acting someone with a broken leg, and this other person actally had a badly injured leg, but wasn't supposed to.

Ooh, and here's one from a private board:

quote:
The Celebration Players' production of the musical 1776 opened this evening at the Black Box Theatre at Celebration School. This is a must see show. The talent is fantastic and the songs are enjoyable. Lively, humorous, touching and thought-provoking are all words that describe this production. Tickets are still available, but once word gets around, I am sure it will be a sell out.

1776 will be playing June 28, 29 and July 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13. Curtain is at 8:00 on Friday and Saturday and 7:00 on Sundays.

Did you hear that?! The talent is fantastic! Clearly, she means me!

[Smile]

My audition last Monday went pretty well. I would say very well, but . . .

We were told to come prepared to sing a song of our choosing--either a capella or bringing sheet music, or bringing accompaniment musi of our own--and to do a cold reading from the script. I chose to sing "The Impossible Dream," from Man of La Mancha.

My voice had been a little bit raw a week or so before the audition, from lack of sleep (due in part to Barefoot and in part to my hectic schedule, which includes taking a class at UCF) and too much overuse during the day. So for about a week before I really tried to take it easy, and I also quit drinking caffiene. It was really a close thing. Two days before, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to sing the song, because I was going hoarse on some of the tougher notes. I also could not allow myself to practice more than once a day out loud. Luckily, by the time Monday came around, my voice was in good shape, and I sang the song really well in audition--Cor says that it was the best she'd heard me sing it.

I was auditioning for the part of Marellus Washburn--Buddy Hackett's part in the original movie. I chose it because it's a pretty good role, maybe the third best in the show, because I know I'm not leading man material, and because in the last two shows I think I've provem myself when it comes to comic timing on stage. They took me seriously enough to have me read Washburn in several scenes.

And then they asked me to sing "Shipoopi." Cold. That's something I've never seen done before, and it was not very cool. Anyway, I don't think I sang it particularly well. I'd only heard it a few times before, and I had not practiced it. It's a very high and very fast song. It can be lowered if they want, but I don't know if they want to do that.

And then we had a dance audition, which I had not been informed we would be having. My goal was simply to not embarrass myself, and I think I succeeded in that. :-\

So I don't know what to think. I should find out what I have any day now.

I wouldn't be surprised if I did not get Washburn because of the whole "Shipoopi" thing. I would also like the part of the mayor, but, 1) I'm not really quite old enough, 2) I don't know that I can carry off a politician, and 3) the mayor doesn't sing. I might not have carried off Shipoopi, but I sing pretty well, and that's not terribly common. So I don't know that they would cast me in a non-singing role.

So what's left, other than chorus? The barbershop-quartet-like Board of Education. Which I reckon I could be happy with.

Honestly, what I really want is to build up a good enough reputation to get a better role in the reprise of 1776 this summer. I want to play Rutlege (sp?) from South Carolina. If I can get that, then I really don't much care what I play in this show.

::continues to cross fingers::

Oh, and I guess I should talk about Cor as well. [Embarrassed]

Cor also auditioned. Oddly enough, this play has more decent male parts than decent female ones. (It doesn't have a lot of either, which is one reason I'm not crazy about it . . . the drop from Washburn to anonymous school board guy is quite steep. [Grumble] ) For a female, there's the lead, and that's pretty much it. There's the mayor's wife, but you have to purposely sing badly and make an ass out of yourself in that role, and I don't know if Cor can bring herself to do that. And then there's chorus. [Dont Know]

Cor's an excellent singer (and reader, of course). I didn't see her dance audition, because she was behind me, but she's a better dancer than I am, so I expect it was at least adequate. But only one really good part, in a company with two really talented female singers. [Dont Know]

::crosses fingers some more::

::hopes for more positive vibes from Hatrack::

Joe, I think you'd be perfect for the role Ron Howard made famous.

Seriously, you said you had never had to sing cold before and since I know you've done this a good bit, I would guess that their request was out of the ordinary. I'm sure a lot of other people left with the same feeling you have.

[Frown]

I knew somebody would catch that omission . . .

I was offered a chorus part. Though I auditioned well, I guess I just wasn't a perfect match for any of the major roles. Anyway, I just finished doing a production and spending several nights a week apart from my family, and I am also taking a class, so I decided to sit this one out and wait for 1776; I declined the part.

EDIT 2006: Based on time, this must have been for Man of La Mancha. Apparently I never bumped the thread for Harvey. Too bad . . . Harvey was a lot of fun--more fun that the first time I was in it, back in 1994.

Icky, that song, The Impossible Dream, was a song I sang in Jr High as s solo. I got a standing ovation...and then didn't make the show chorus, the first time in my whole life I didn't make the cut.

Funny thing is that I was good enough to solo in the Honors choir, and in States. [Dont Know]

I had auditioned with a cold, and hurt my voice. Since I had never had a vocal lesson in my life, I began singing wrong, way back in my throat, when I needed to sing my solos for the States.

I love that song, but can't get the last note anymore, not even in my current nasally voice. [Frown]

Good luck with the next audition though....I can say that now, because it isn't happening yet, therefore no jinx.

Yet. [Big Grin]
