Hollywood Stock Exchange.

This is something like a stock market, only you are putting in fake money for stock in celebrities, movies, songs, artists and what not. The more popular what you pick, the better your stock.

So I am proposing a challenge to see who can do the best in 7 months. This gives enough time for LotR's: RotK to get out (cause we all know it will be a huge success).

If you think you can win, go ahead and post on this thread.

Winner gets... um... an award.

Well, I joined. fugu13 as my username (sorry T, didn't think to put your name in or I would've).

I'm taking my usual course, and doing hideously risky things with fake money. If it works, I'm filthy stinking rich. Otherwise I'm not.

Can I bye stocks in Bob?

I hope Pirates of the Carribean will be big. I just bought $745,000 worth of Orlando Bloom.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

I think Mr. Bloom is a safe bet for other reasons.

My main strategy is to short some things I think will bomb horribly, backed up with smaller buys in a couple films I'm pretty certain will outperform expectations.

Ya, if you want a good look at upcoming movies and their release dates check out www.comingsoon.net and on the side you'll see Release Dates.

Buy Bruce Almighty and Xmen2 warrants! Both of these are right now guaranteed money makers. Each has a price + strike price less than the current box office take. That means there is no way to lose money (neglecting brokers fees, but while exorbitant they're less than what you'll make on the deal).

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Ocean's Twelve has been a mover. Glad I grabbed that yesterday. I think I diversified a bit too much, so I'll have to trim my portfolio a bit.

::laughs::

I like the 66% growth of the Warrent on Pirates and the 20% growth on its Call making me a total of 59,500 [Smile]

You snapped up a full share of warrants then, too, eh?

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

Darn my Rowan Atkins is losing mone. What a bean.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Ooh, I just had a good idea. It's possible to max out on Matrix Reloaded Warrants (strike @ 300) for a mere $600 (total), because the matrix reloaded is at 272 and change and not rising very fast at all (at this rate it's going to be at only around 280). However, the release date for revolutions is the fifth! If the film surges in the weekend before it's sequel comes out, in comes the moolah. And if it doesn't, I'm out $600. Oh no.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Heh. The Bad Boys Put is now +97% on the day.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Having a fairly weak day today...only up about 5k. I dumped some losers, and am seriously considering dumping the actor bonds, they don't seem to be of much help unless you catch somebody 'hot'. Ocean's Twelve, which I grabbed early, has been my big winner again.

i'm smart baby!

And i aint giving up any of my secrets!

honestly, about half of that is Bruce Almighty. but alot of my smaller pick ups are doing really well. Pirates of the Caribean was a great buy for me too.

Damn commission fees are killing me!

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

I think I diversified too much...I'm trimming my holdings to the items that are really profitable. Ender's Game has kicked butt, probably due to the fact that I bought 50,000 shares of it. [Smile] Ocean's 12 and King Arthur have been winners too.

I'm up about $30,000 so far today. Below average, but tolerable, especially as the high risers are leveling off and a lot of my investments are targetted at the long run.

Wow, I haven't checked till now, but I got 1.1 million off them. 11 people. Still, I've earned 500,000, even if the rest was gotten through refering people.

I'd rather not receive friends' money. That way I feel legitimate. Also, since I've got just about the same as T_Smith in earned income as a percentage of seed money, I feel pretty darn good about my performance.

I'm in as XavierM01.

I started out pretty crappy, but have made some decent money since then. I think hatrack has pushed the Enders Game stock up [Smile] . I personally own quite a bit of it.

I made 30 grand today, pretty much entirely with Kiera Knightly. It doesn't take a genius to know that her career is on its way up. If I had started a month ago when she came out in Bend it like Beckham, I would have made a fortune on her.

damnit...I should sold bruce almighty when it peaked. I've lost like over 50 or 60k since then. luckily my other invenstments are keeping me even, but it still sucks...

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

If you're ralking about a blockbuster warrant on Bruce Almighty, I'd suggest buying more (if you can). The strike price + warrant price is less than the current total box office. You're guaranteed to make money.

Question, Whale Rider is a great artsy movie, but it probably won't be a good money maker. Is $$ the only thing that determines value here?

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Well, popularity before release can have an effect, but after, it's just money.

Posted by Strider (Member # 1807) on :

well, that's not exactly true. popularity after release has a big effect too. as well as expected earnings.

case in point. if i had sold off Bruce Almighty warrent twice, and bought it back twice at opportune moments i'd have made an extra 80k or so off that movie. all because of natural fluctuations in the market. [Smile]

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Fluctuations aren't always caused by popularity, but utility. Once something has made me money, I can sell it and buy something newer with more potential profit. Enough people doing that would cause a drop in a stock (say if we all sold Ender's Game) [Wink] that isn't due to popularity.

Besides, don't the stocks get adjusted due to their box office take?

Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :

Box office draw is only part of it. Like the real stock market, the price is determined by what everyone else thinks its worth. Sort of like baseball cards or comic books.

Box office gains, popularity, quality, and cool factor all play a part [Smile] .

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Once the opening weekend box office is totaled, a MovieStock will adjust in price to reflect the actual box-office gross, versus what was expected.

I've made my $54 million buy buying movies in development and then having them move to the Theatre....

I've never done the short, call and cover stuff, but I'm interested in trying it.

Anyone want to give me a lesson?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Man, I had totally been slacking on this, and I'm still at 5 million. One million more than the last time I had checked.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Shorting is basically betting that a movie is overpriced and will drop, such as a box office bomb (Gigli, for one, made money for me by shorting it). You 'cover' when you want to cash out your short. Calls and puts are basically bets like the above, but for the opening weekend. You 'call' when you think a movie will make it's target price (Gigli's was $10 million, to continue the example). You use the 'put' when you think it will come in below that.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

The calls and puts are risky, also. If you buy a call, and the movie doesn't hit the price set, you lose all the money you put in. So, you can make some big money sometimes, but at greater potential cost.

Oh, and blockbuster warrants work like calls, but for the whole run of the movie.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Hmm, haven't looked for a while, and I had been planning to do some fancy footwork as well.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

I'd say yes, it is a good investment, since the next Star Wars trailer will be with it, and there's an outside chance a Harry Potter one will also. SW alone will increase ticket sales (not knowing the game, I assume that's what "a good investment" would need), but the double whammy would be insane.
