Well, someone had to do it.

And mostly, I just wanted to see who'd buy stock in me. Yeah, that's right—as if post-whoring isn't enough, I actually want people to buy me.

So have at it! The trading floor is open.

Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :

Well I promised to buy ten shares of stock in whoever started this thread, so I guess I will.

That is if the price is reasonable. How much are they?

By the way, up to 49% of the stock in Xavier is going to be available to the public soon. How many shares is reasonable to divide that into? I've never really followed the stock market. Its in the thousands right?

BTW, we should all start with a certain amount of money, say 10,000 dollars?

::buys Celia::

You can never have too much Celia or Ralphie.

::buys TomD::

That's a growth stock for sure.

::buys Dan R::

It's his birthday. His stock has got to go up!

*has no idea what "short-sell" means*

*realizes he's in over his head*

*also realizes that Jon Boy stock is not currently available, as Jon Boy Inc. is currently in the process of a merger*

Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :

Short-sell means that he's betting on your stock value going down [Razz] .

Well then I will buy stock in the newly created Jon Duda corporation. (Or is it Diosmel Boy?)

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

I'm going to buy 25,000 shares of Ryuko. She's new to the market, but I feel that she's gonna blast off real soon.

I'd also like to buy a little of myself, just in case everyone wants a piece of me I'd like a piece to myself.

I'll buy 1,000 shares of Bob. He's really expensive and I'll buy more later.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Good pick, Icky - I just went up 14 1/16 points.

I invest all of my 10,000 and buy 200 shares of Hobbes, for no real reason except that I can buy him at exactly $50.00 a share, making my number of shares nice and round and simplifying my math for the rest of the game.

Diversification is overrated.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Jon Duda sounds better than Diosmel Boy. And come on, Bernard—this merger is almost guaranteed to increase my value.

I'll invest in a few post whores—namely Icarus, Bob_Scopatz, and Pat. They're guaranteed money-makers.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Jon Boy, you sold me. Plus, you seem cheap.
I'll take 3*10^7 shares, please.

You know what this reminds me of? The Great Tulip Market Bust, in Holland? about 200-250 years ago?
True story, the entire country went nuts for tulips.
Prices soared. Everybody had to have tulips. Soon, everybody was "investing" in "tulip futures," buying tulips that hadn't even been planted yet. Fortunes were made and lost, prices went to insane levels ---and then came the inevitable market crash, causing a depression.
The Internet Stock Bubble reminded me of it quite a bit.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

You know, I suddenly get an uneasy feeling with this. Creative, yes, but still uneasy. It's almost like putting a price on a poster and giving them their worth.

Posted by ak (Member # 90) on :

Your stock price per share is the current highest member number minus your member number. This way we all gradually go up!

I say we all should start with $100,000. Inflation, after all, and why be peons?

[ July 13, 2003, 04:30 AM: Message edited by: ak ]

Posted by ak (Member # 90) on :

Or should your stock price be your post count divided by your member number? If so, I'll have to go back to aka (post count 5000, member number 130 or so) to get anything out of my IPO.

[ July 13, 2003, 04:29 AM: Message edited by: ak ]

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Oh, please, ak. I thought you were a newbies last line of defense.
Now you're defining stock prices to make anybody who registered this year get forced into wage slavery.

Why doesn't everybody have a offer price they pick? If they never get any takers, they drop their price until they do. Of course, some won't have takers at price=0, but I can't help that...

My offer price is $100 per share...no crowding, you'll all get a piece... [Wink]

Let the holy, invisible hand of the market guide us!

Maybe this is all a bad idea. I guess I don't like the idea of assigning monetary values to people (unless it's celebrities on the Hollywood Stock Exchange—celebrities hardly count as people, right?).

So is there any trading in threads? Those have numbers and whatever. And we can actively manipulate them. I'm buying 25,000 shares of Hatrack Stock Exchange at 43 posts. I wish I understood warrants and options and stuff, or I could make some prediction about that. Like I have a right to sell this at 100 posts in 3 days, and if it's more than that I keep the extra. That's what I'll do.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Thread Valuations Proposal:

Reply Count = $0.10
Page Count = $1
Days since Thread started = -$1
Replies authored by post starter or known investors =-$0.10
Number of other threads by same starter on page 1 = $1

Not sure how to incorporate loss of value, if what I've suggested is "fair". Maybe multiple pages should decrease the value rather than increase it. Also dobies or adversarially referenced threads.

I was just trolling around the old postings to find some stuff to read. It really is quite entertaining for a newbie, such as myself, and, by exposing myself to the veteran Hatrackers' styles, I might stand a better chance in dkw's fine Guess the Author threads.

I typed in the search term "pariah" for fun. Only two results came up. I took the most recent.

This topic concerned a posting by Jettboy. Some heated things were being said by everyone, so I really couldn't tear myself away. It was rather like watching a car plow through a crowded shopping mall--I was horrified and fascinated all at once. (Aside, I really enjoyed mickillian's flames!)

Then I found a real voice of reason from, for me, a very unlikely source!

A lack of humility is what prevented Baldar from backing down and allowing himself to be a valued member of Hatrack.

It's not a lack of humility that causes one to be offended when they perceive a slight to their beliefs, but it could be a lack that prevents a person from apologizing when they realize offense has been taken, and to forgive quickly when it's been received.

Humility is really difficult to exercise all the time. The people involved in what seems to be the crux of the situation are people I generally think of as being pretty humble - thinking of others before they post and showing a concern for the pulse of Hatrack by trying to keep peace. But when the offense hits a vital nerve, that's when it's really easy to harbor a small resentment and protect it.

I know, because I do it all the time.

Humility is a quality I'm working on with a vengeance. It doesn't come naturally to me, as I tend to be judgemental of people I perceive to be in positions of power, but I'm realizing how important it is all the time. And how amazingly difficult it is to exercise.

A truly humble person won't let themselves be walked on, but they will do everything in their power to think first of the other person, most especially when it is someone they have a close relationship with. At Hatrack, we may not have fostered close relationships with everyone, but it's like living in the same house. Your posts are going to touch at some point, and you're going to run into them often enough so that it's in your best interest to keep peace. But, more importantly, it's in theirs.

Jettboy - Probably no one outside the LDS faith can understand the specific type of persecution you face than someone of my religion. But that's to be expected - isn't that what both of our religions teach us is a sign that we're doing the right thing? A double standard as a reaction to other double standards may seem like justice, but it's only the same injustice practiced twice, not a balancing of the scales. Knowing how it feels should make you incensed at the thought of others having to face the same ordeal, specifically because you know what it's like. I think you know that.

I understand I really have no place to be preachy (my humility is shaking it's head at me), but I think the reason most of us were attracted to Hatrack is not just the good conversation, the proper grammar and spelling, the diversity of backgrounds or simply the author who we all love - it's because we're attracted to each other as people, and we feel safe enough to post our ideas hoping they're attracted to us. I think the only way we can keep that attraction to each other is to look out for each other's best interests. Because then I know, if I've got everyone else's back, then everyone's got mine.

To my own experience here (and no, I won't paste in the obligatory link) this was very surprising. We all had fun with my cynical, obsiquious thread I've Been Warned. , and in this thread about Ralphie's rep.

But, you know what? I'm really glad that I purchased all of those shares of Ralphie, they are gold standard! And I'll take a thousand more! [Cool]

Sheesh! You people need to take second-grade math again. I missed this the first time around, but reading it now, I have found some wild atrocities. Namely:

Icarus

quote:
::buys Ryuko, Ralphie, Elizabeth, Annie, Diosmel Duda, and TAK::
Godric

quote:
::purchases 10,000 shares in Diosmel Duda::
Hobbes

quote:
Also, 300 of DD since the merger will also boost that stock.
There's a possibility Icarus meant "buys stock in . . . " when he said "buys," but if not, I seem to be spread a little thin (as in, Jatraqueros seem to own more than 100% of me, to say nothing of JB). And then I started adding up how much of Ralphie and celia you people own. Whoa.

And I never even put myself on the market. [Smile]

It's probably best that you didn't. Putting yourself on the market is a sure way to devalue your own stock.

At least I have the consolation of knowing that if anyone has a legitimate claim to you, it's me. [Smile]

No, Saxon, I wasn't talking to you.
