There’s been a lot of calls for an evil smilie lately, and I have recently found myself in need of just such an image for one of my posts. As the self declared smilie wizard, I feel both obligated and prepared to lead a campaign for a new, evil smilie. I am now accepting volunteers who wish to help my campaign. Our first order of business is to discover just how difficult it is to add a smilie to the forum.

So who is with me?

Here! Here!

I wholeheartedly second that motion!

*tents fingers*

(He, he, he, excellent!)

Having recently been called evil myself (mafia thread, day 5 [Wink] ), I'd have to say that I definitely support this venture. [Big Grin]

I thought *I* was the evil smiley.

Sorry Slash, we're going after a full fledged image here, not a representation of one. [Cool]

UBB classic version 6.1.0 allows for fairly easy updating of Graemlins, so if we're on a current version it's not hard.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Actually, if we're adding graemlins, it seems more efficient to me to add a bunch at once. [Big Grin]

Some suggestions:
For evil smilies: evil1, evil2, evil3, evil4, evil5. My personal preference would be the first one or the last one.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Some others I would love to see: thud, roflol, thumbsup, help, shrug, jawdrop, bow, blush, grumble, excited, group hug, head bang.

There are others . . . but that's a good start, I think. [Big Grin]

ha ha, those are great Rivka!

I personally would vote for #4 or #5 of the evil smileys.

I also loved blush and grumble. [Big Grin] (The last two didn't work for me though...)

evil you say? *pinky to pursed lips*

(brilliant rivka. I need the head-banging one, badly)

Hobbes, I will join your campaign under one condition. You friggin figure out that code I sent you!! I'll even send you the cheat sheet I gave celia!

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Oops, sorry, that site used to allow links . . . but clearly they no longer do. I have substituted one that does. Try them now, they should work.

I have lots of graemlin pages bookmarked. The other board I post on allows UBB Code Images, so I can use them there. The problem with that is, some links don't work all the time . . . as I just demonstrated. [Wink] I still can't find a new hair-pulling one. That was a great one -- but the site that had it seems to have disappeared some time in the last two weeks. [Razz]

Ohh, sorry T, I think I lost it. [Embarrassed] I was far more excited about my 19 credits next semester. [Roll Eyes] [Wink] If you send those to me I'll certainly do my best!

I'm setting rules on this right now. The first is that they all have to be the same size as the smilies we have now, no huge graemlins here that are harder to download and make inconcistant coding.

Second is that they all have to be in the same style as these smilies. Simple colors, and have the same "feeling". For instance, the [Razz] smilie gives a great tongue sticking out, but the edges of his/her mouth curve upwards in a smile. He/She may be sticking it to you (pun intended [Wink] ) but they're still having a good time. I can make the official descion on that, or at least the official descion before the site admins get invloved since what they say goes. Which happens to be rule number three.

My final rule (number four) is that each smilie has to have a unique and meaningful purpose. Which means no werid (cool, but un-used) trillian type smilies, and no smilies who do not create any new usage abilities.

Now, I call out to the site admins (KCard and KathrynHJanitor) to tell us what they think of this. We'll start to make some overall campaign plans based on that. All right, what do the rulers of Hatrack think?

If they (or you depending on whose reading this [Wink] ) don't see this in the next day/two days I'll send an e-mail. [Cool]

I'm with you on that demand.
An evil smiley would be cool.

I'm in the "No evil smilie" camp.

Evil is hard. Evil is subtle. Evil means a smiling face and knife in your back.

An evil smilie is posturing - the revving of the motorcycle and strut down the hallway in black leather jacket. True evil doesn't need a smilie - the subtlety of words is better.

Smiling faces, on the other hand, are not posturing. They serve a multitude of functions and generally warm and fuzzy. Smiling faces are for the reader - they soften a blow, convey good will, compliment a joke. Evil smilies are for the poster; "Look how cool I am." Evil smilies are, well, selfish smilies.

I think a devilish smiley, the same hue as the embarrassed smiley and the mad smiley, but with a grin and devil horns, is entirely appropriate.

And insanely useful. But in the meantime, this will do:

:slash:

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

Was that supposed to have a link?

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

No. Slash said that he was the evil smiley, hence :slash:

If celia posts a smilie, does that make it evil? Did that smilie she used always seem a bit shady or is it just because she used it?

Posted by qsysue (Member # 5229) on :

Does this board not allow html?

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

No.

Posted by Jeni (Member # 1454) on :

I'd rather not see a bunch of animated smilies littering posts. They're cute, but it's very distracting.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

This one isn't animated, and I think it fits with our others.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Guess I was too subtle for this crowd . . .

Well, if the administrators of the board allowed you to put a user-posted image in your signature Hobbes, that's a foot in the door to put other pictures up. The administrators wouldn't want that. The smiles can be updated. You can add more, we just need to ask KathrynHJanitor or kacard. So yeah, sorry to burst your bubble Hobbes, but the chances of you being allowed to put up a user-posted smilie is less than slim-to-nill. [Frown]

I love the group hug one. The THUD one was funny.

I don't know. If I had a super cool web site, I might get addicted to the amount of smilies I could aquire, because the longer life goes the more smilies will show up!

I will not be an anti-smilie netluddite!

[Eek!] !NO! [Eek!]

More smilies! We definitely need a soap-box smilie and single hug smilie. And I love the *thud* smilie. It amuses me.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

We need a "flees the scene" graemlin.

A twitchy graemlin (something like o_0 or >_O) would be awesome.
