A couplet is a set of two poetic lines. They have the same rhythm, and the same rhyme at the end. The subject is up to you, but here are the awards I will be giving out. They all have to do with the Greek Gods and/or Warcraft races (a decision made while driving home last night). These are the awards:

The Dionysus/Pandaren Award: Only a person who was drunk would have thought up a panda who fights with beer - that's only logical. This award is for the funniest couplet.

The Ares/Kobold Award: Ares is a cowardly fighting god, and I thought kobolds would suit him nicely as a species. This award is for the worst couplet.

The Aphrodite/Sorceress Award: Both the goddess of love and the sorceresses of Warcraft use spells to entrance and slow down their targets. This award is for the most romantic couplet.

The Athene/Night Elf Award: Athene was the goddess of calculated warfare, and she appreciated the natural world. The Night elves use her owls, her trees, and her strategies to be one of the more powerful races in Warcraft. This award is for the couplet which is crafted the best.

The Zeus Award: Oddly enough, the offspring of the Dionysus/Pandaren, this award is for the best poem about ADULTERY, political or otherwise. Sorry, there was no way I couldn't offer this [Smile]

This contest is open from when I post this thread until 8 AM, EST on Saturday the first of August. Happy writing!

You may fade from the light of the sun and the moon and the stars in their black-velvet sea,
And the earth be bereft of your lyrics and tune, but your music lives always in me.

I tip-toed to surprise my lover,
Surprise! I caught her with my brother!

Between those two, I should be eligible for any one of the awards. [Big Grin]

I thought he was just her Joy tool
She loves him though and I'm a fool.

The world shifts, I don't know how
From then and there to here and now.

She loves us all. She never lied.
She loves us all. Oh murder'd pride.

I mean only to encourage y'all, I don't want to play,
but I'm hoping for more than just nine couplets in one day.

I think we should have a limerick thread,
'cause all I can think of to rhyme here is "bread." [Confused]

TRAGEDY

Needs and Wants, Wants and Needs,
What's the difference to a man that bleeds?

Wants and Needs, Needs and Wants,
These are the thorns of a Godly Taunt.

COMEDY

Heros and Valor, Valor of Heroes,
Let's kill some Orcs, and go out for Gyros.

ODDITY

He was a Centaur, she was a Muse
And their beautiful children adorned three horseshoes.

ENTITY (get it?)

Gone are the Gods, yet we bathe in their Wonder.
Let no man put their Legends asunder.

just give me some time to look your entries through.

but I will work through the words today.

My first award, the Aphrodite/Sorceress award, goes to KarlEd, for his first couplet entered onto this post.

You may fade from the light of the sun and the moon and the stars in their black-velvet sea,
And the earth be bereft of your lyrics and tune, but your music lives always in me.

[Kiss] [The Wave] Well done! The oracle predicts you will win many hearts with such writing!

Posted by Gwynaria (Member # 5365) on :

The second award, the Athene/Night Elf award, goes to Dan_raven, with his crafty use of words ending with the sound "ed".

Greek gods did not inspire me to rhyme the lone word thread.
So I shot Fred once in the head where he bled red til dead.

[Hail] [The Wave] The oracle predicts such craftiness will earn you respect from all who read what you write. Well done!

Posted by Gwynaria (Member # 5365) on :

The third award, the Ares/Kobold award, goes to asQmh, for his simple yet infuriating rhyme. AsQmh, I will keep your advice in mind, if no one gets to make that post first. Here is the couplet:

I think we should have a limerick thread,
'cause all I can think of to rhyme here is "bread."

[No No] [The Wave] The oracle believes that such a small effort shows that there is some thought in it, and that more effort can yield even better poetry. Well Done!

Posted by Gwynaria (Member # 5365) on :

The fourth award, the Zeus award, goes to Zalmoxis, having described any of the possible situations that Zeus, the most powerful and most adulterous Greek god, might be caught by his mortal love's husband.

When I rose and went to partake of my love's dewy light,
I glimpsed a bright, hairy bum running off into the night.

[Monkeys] [The Wave] Well done! The oracle believes that you will have better luck with love since you are able to write about its hardships.

Posted by Gwynaria (Member # 5365) on :

The fifth and final award, the Dionysus/Pandaren award, is probably the toughest to give because everyone on this post has a great sense of humor. But the impossible must be done, so...

It's a tie, between Bob_Scopatz and Alucard... Bob gets the award for trying to make me look like a flatworm, and Alucard gets the award for being such a die-hard WarIII fan.

Bob's couplet:
Gwynaria Planaria
flatworm extraordinaria

Alucard's couplet:
Heros and Valor, Valor of Heroes,
Let's kill some Orcs, and go out for Gyros.

[Laugh] [ROFL] [The Wave] Well done, you two! The oracle predicts that Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, and Robin Williams had better watch out!

Posted by Gwynaria (Member # 5365) on :

[Party] [The Wave] [Wave] [Razz] [Big Grin] [Wink]
Well done, all of you! Thank you for writing in, and for making my first topic a grand success. I couldn't have done it without you!

Posted by Alucard... (Member # 4924) on :

Thanks Gwynaria!

With the love life of Eddie Murphy and his choice of erm...women, and the lifestyle Robin Williams leads, I will stick with Steve Martin.

But hey, if those 3 want to relive The Jerk, get high on paint fumes shouting "Nanoo Nanoo" and go pick up transvestite hookers, I'm in. Just renew my Bond Card and give me that phone call!

On second thought, cancel. I'm sticking with Hatrack! [Blushing]

Gwynaria, this thread was truly great, inspiring rhyme in all
Perhaps you could do a different one now, but it really is your call

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

For all the losing couplets I did utter,
I must apologize for all the clutter.

[Grumble]

[Big Grin]

Thank you for fond memories
We really did aim to please.

The contest's over, so sad for me.

I wish Gwyn would post another soon
'Cuz if she did, 'twould be a boon.

Bob and Dan and all the rest
Would write more poems at her behest.

'Tis so fun to chat this way
But why that is I'm loath to say"

We've done Haikus and couplets.

I smell a reincarntation of the limmerick threads, I know you hear me knockin' and I'm bringing Ned from Nantucket with me...

[Mad] -> [Evil] -> [Evil Laugh] (the transformation from mild-mannered druggist to evil mad scientist/dirty limmerick author is complete!)

Alucard, go for it. [Evil Laugh]

A couplet about my recent haircut (in Iambic Pentameter)

Delilah's shears avoided a Van Gogh
Transforming to a Crew, when 'twas a 'Fro.
