Back by popular demand (thanks Mac), I would like to again try to initiate a New England Hatrack Picnic to be held in Boston at some time in the next month or two.

Said picnic shall not be in conjunction with any concert, ballgame, or other mode of entertainment that might exclude or distract any segment of the Jatraquero population of New England. Just because the last time we tried that, it fizzled out.

Allow me to register a vote for an actual picnic along the banks of the Charles River. Yay or nay?

And when? Any preferences?

I'm moving then, so I'm a bit busy [Smile]

Okay. September it is. Where are you moving to, Paul?

Harbor Point.
Actually, an excellent place to have a picnic *Grin*

Man, how much is the rent there?

My girlfriend and I are moving 9/1 to Davis Sq., so any time after the first increases my chance to make an appearance.

I think weekends in Sept are good for me, as well.

Muff.

If it's after 12pm on Saturday or any time on Sunday on a weekend in Sept, I'm there. (I have class till 12:30 pm on Saturdays and from 6-9pm on Fridays).

I sooooooooooo want to eat at Bartley's Burgers!!

Bartley's... mmm... Burger....

Sorry *Wipes up puddle*

I may have a project in Boston sometime this fall. I'll let you all know if I'm coming up and have some time.

Not to derail the picnic thread. I'm just hoping to meet some of you at some OTHER time.

Martha, I will definitely stalk you if you make us all a picnic in the style of Martha Stewart.

Posted by Gwynaria (Member # 5365) on :

I wish I could come, but I'm going to be in college and focused on my studies (and activities), and since I'm a freshman I will not have a car at my disposal. Plus, I'm cutting back on my spending since I don't have a job, so buying any sort of ticket is out.

But if any of you is going to this picnic from Burlington, tell me now. I will find you [Evil]

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Gwyn,

Do you mean Burlington Mass or Vermont?

Posted by Gwynaria (Member # 5365) on :

Vermont... is that a bad thing? I'm going to be living there for four years.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

No, Vermont is a good thing. I went to school in Vermont, too, down the road apiece.

If you were in Burlington, Mass I could give you a ride if I go. Burlington North is a bit far.

Oh well [Smile] Thanks for the offer.

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

Gwyn, if you find a ride down, I might be able to get you a ride back up there... My dad works at Fletcher Allen (hospital in Burlington) some weeks, drives up on Sundays and home on wednesdays. So we'll see...

[bump]

Mike! Beca!! Dragon! MyrrdinFyre! Speak to me!

Bob? When are you coming to Boston?

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

woot! I could do this one. I missed the NJ hatrack get together, so I really should get to one of these things. I have plenty of friends up in Boston who I could stay with.

I'm also in the realm of it needing to be a weekend (the NJ one wasn't, dangit) because I teach. But a 4.5 hour drive up Saturday, then a 4.5 hour drive back sunday afternoon wouldn't kill me. Much.

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

Okay, so here are our September Saturdays:

6
13
20
27

And if it turns out Bob is coming in October then maybe we'll move our picnic later to Borg him in.

I have no preference of weekends -- does anyone else have votes, or should I just decide? I think we should have a picnic dinner on the Saturday and then get together again on the sunday for some event to be determined on the spur of the moment (a movie or some such).

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

<resurrect>

I now have a job at which I work Saturdays til 6pm. Of course I have no problem with people starting earlier than that as long as I can join up with you after work. Or I guess we could have our shindig on Sunday only -- but it'd be nice if it could be both Saturday and Sunday to accomodate everyone.

Someone mentioned in the pizza thread that there's fantastic pizza in Lowell, which isn't too far away. I suspect I'm not alone in not having a car, so maybe we could meet in Boston and somehow carpool out to Lowell.
Or, there's a Thai place right in Boston, Brown Sugar Cafe, that is delicious -- they make a "country style pad thai" for hot-n-spicy people that is the best anywhere. And they have plenty of dishes for bland-- I mean, less adventurous people [Big Grin]

Anyway. So, my preferences so far are for the 13/14th or the 27/28th of September. Please, does anyone else have any opinions?

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

*cough* Bartley's Burgers *cough*

Lowell is 15-30 minutes closer to me than Boston (depending on traffic).

I once had a client take off on me in Lowell...ah...Lowell...

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

The music festival in Lowell was weird. It is such a strange place, and reminds me of a Star Trek episode,

However, there is the pizza place, it is closer to Mack, and there is the textile museum, which is fascinating. It is a tricky place to negotiate, though. I got lost a few times. I could see the place I needed to be, but couldn't figure out how to get there.

I would be happy to go into Boston, too, more likely near the end of the month.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

What about camping?

Posted by WheatPuppet (Member # 5142) on :

I have family in the Boston area--in Lincoln and Waban... or Newton... or something--I could probably make it if I finagled a ride down there. *cough* Gwyn *cough* I don't think a weekend is too much to ask.

If you decide to bump it to October, there's one weekend that I wouldn't be able to make it. An annual family reunion/gathering/silliness that is top priority. I don't know which weekend it is, though. Usually Columbus day weekend or the weekend before.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

I'm still there as long as it stays on a weekend. It's a 5-6 hour drive from Jersey depending on traffic (took me damn near 7 last time I went), but I could go up on Saturday morning (or, if I'm masochistic enough, Friday night) and come back on Sunday.

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

Mac, I'm sorry but I think it has to be Boston. Because of the more southerly contingent, and because of the carless, and because Elizabeth got lost in Lowell.

But like I said, if we meet in Boston we can caravan up to Lowell the next day. I for one am interested in seeing the textile museum.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Oh, Boston is fine. It's only 45 min-an hour from me. I'm just in Manchester. I was just commenting on Lowell. I used to work in Lawrence, we had clients from Lowell, so I drove there a lot. Every single time I had to go to downtown Lowell, I got lost. [Wink]

And Camping is awesome [Smile]

Cow, drag John up with you! And there's someone else in Jersey...Strider?

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

If people wanted to camp, and if there are a significant number who are coming from the south, which is a witch of a drive, we could camp somewhere out near Sturbridge. People coming from New York and Jersey would be able to come straight up 84, it wouldn't be too far for Mack and the Boston crowd, and I know there is a KOA near there with those little cabins, if people don't have tents.

Or, the Cape in the fall is beautiful, and not as crowded.

Sorry to keep bringing up new plans.

Hmm when I read this I envisioned an honest to goodness picnic. You know with baskets and everything probably on Boston common. I think that would be spiffy. I'd probably drive the 2 hrs east and hop on the T to do that.

But feel free to ignore that and keep on with the planning.

Btw I think camping would be sorta....hellish to organize between a lot of people who don't know each other very well. We have a hard enough time when it's a group of friends.

A picnic on the Common also sounds lovely. I am just throwing out ideas, so don't feel like it matters to me what is decided. I have a car, and I don't mind driving, and I sure remember the days of not having one.

Oooooh! Me I wanna go! The first two weekends in September are ok for me as is October I think.

Mack, I can't believe we haven't met yet! I get so suprised every time you say you live in Manchester; I'm in Amherst.

I will need (when we have more definate plans) for someone to help me convince my parents that you're not crazy old men who've been stalking me over the internet. But That can wait till we know just what we're doing.

lol, my friends and I decided that getting lost would be fun so we just drove around for a few hours without looking at a map and ended up in Lowell. It was really fun. [Smile]

I think I've been there. It's an awesome museum if only for the fact that they give you earplugs to go onto the weaving floor with about 80 belt-powered, clockwork weaving machines. You need them, it's a ruckus when they're all going.

I'm probably going to have a time convincing my parents that you're all not crazy pedophiles, too. Somehow I don't think I have to worry about crazy people on Orson Scott Card's forum... except for Thor, that is. [Wink]

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

I think we could probably figure out a way to convince people's parents that we're safe (if not entirely vanilla).

Camping sounds like fun -- somehow the idea of sitting around a bonfire telling stories with a bunch of jatraqueros is my idea of a grand time. I'll bring the marshmallows!
I don't have a tent, though, so cabins would be nice (or if someone has extra tentspace...)

Let's make it Sept.13 and 14th, unless a lot of people have problems with that. Good to put a specific date on it so we can start really planning. Besides, if Dragon can come then we'll have a real circus on our hands [Big Grin]

(btw, Mike and Suneun are away this week teaching trapeze in Brattleboro.)

I'm sorry Fishtail, not to have this thing in October. I'm being shamelessly selfish and NOT making any plans for my last day off before November (I work in a costume shop, we get SWAMPED in October and I plan on taking advantage of all the overtime hours I can handle).

Hehe. I'm with Mack on that one. I can't believe she still pushes for that place 20 months after I took her ladyday and pod there [Smile]

Awesome burgers and a very hatracky environment.

Anyhoo. I THINK any weekend is gonna be fine for me. The 6-7th might be a bit tough cause I'm moving the monday before.

All roads lead to Amherst, sarah.

Let's get together for dinner on the Common, Saturday afternoon/evening. I don't know the Common well at all, so I don't know how I'd find you guys short of walking in circles looking for a bunch of crazy intellectual people. You could come to Boston Costume, where I work and which is not far from the Common, and that way we'd all have a meeting place and time (we close at 6pm), and I can make sure that you guys don't have any fun until I'm done with work and can join you.

Evie, how old are you? And how far from Boston? I'm still trying to think of a way to prove to various parents that we won't kidnap you. Unless we like you a whole lot.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

I kidnap kids five days a week for 1.5 hour sessions...oh wait, that isn't kidnapping. That's THERAPY. [Wink]

Paul, those burgers were and are by FAR the best burgers I've ever had. Though your sweet potato fries were GROSS.

That's Amherst, NH. The catchment area for the mental health agency I work for is Nashua, Hudson, Merrimack, Milford, Amherst, Hollis and Brookline.

And any weekend is good for me. I have class till 12:30-1pm on saturday, but I'm free after that and not far away from Boston. I can also give NH hatrackers a lift if needed in my snazzy black GSX. *drools over car*

I'm also not really up for a textile museum. Come ON. TEXTILE MUSEUM?! With all the neat stuff in Boston? I'm still hypomanic and bore easily. Then I become a pain in the ass.

Really. Ask my friends.

Wait.

What friends? [Eek!]

So, I will attend if I can. [Smile]

Yay for Sept.13 and 14th! Who else would definately go?

Mack, I may take you up on that lift if I can convince my parents to let me go. (I'll start working on them as soon as I know it's really on.)

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

I can supply them with supporting stuff, too. Like, I work for community council, they can verify that I work there, blah blah.

Posted by WheatPuppet (Member # 5142) on :

I got the date, but where's the meeting place, exactly?

I know very little about the layout of any city that isn't Montpelier, Burlington, or Barre, VT. I suggest meeting in a place that's big and easy to find... somewhere near a T-station would be helpful, too, since I know sort-of how to navigate the T.

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

Dragon, if you have trouble persuading your mom, email me and I'll give you my phone number -- I will be happy to talk with her on the phone if that will help. Ditto to anyone else whose parents need convincing. My email is in my profile. I am a very normal-sounding person on the phone. [Evil]

Okay, it's official: September 13th. Let's meet at Bartley's Burgers at 6PM. (Please note, they accept cash only. Also, it is likely to be VERY crowded -- Mac, do you know if they take reservations?)

And we'll do our picnic on the Charles on the 14th, so everyone keep that date free. For anyone who's coming from afar, I am certain we can rustle up some overnight accomodations on couches and such.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

Man. Had to pick the 13th.

I can still make it, I'll just be tired and irritable, most likely. I have to take the secondary math Praxis that morning at 7:30. Ick.

Sorry martha, was going for the consonance [Smile]

Anyrate, Bartleys is a good place to meet. Just be aware that we will MEET at 6, and sit down at 6:30 or so. Its fast turnover, and limited space, and usually crowded.

I'll be there. I'll try to drag my very studly brother in the hopes of hooking him up with a hatrack woman, who are known to be the ideal women for all english majors, of which my brother is one. Did I mention he's got lots of muscles, is a really sweet guy, and desperately single?

Posted by WheatPuppet (Member # 5142) on :

Evie, if I'm going, you wouldn't be the only teenager there. I'm 19, and I'd likely bring my girlfreind, Gretchen (SN: Gwynaria), who's 18.

... Do I have to pry the location of this "Bartleys" out of someone, or will someone give me an idea of where it is willingly. I suppose I could check out Streets 98, that has almost every business in the U.S. that existed in 1998. Masochistic Microsoft data-entry freaks! (mmm... alliteration [Big Grin] )

I believe I shall be the oldest there (I am turning 25 on Sept.18th). Though Paul can still hold the title of Most Ancient from 6pm until I get there. Unless.. Beca, I don't remember how old you are.

Yes, sarahdipity and Evie, those are the plans, 6pm Saturday September 13th at Bartley's Burgers.

There is also very definite talk of a real Picnic along the banks of the Charles River the next day, Sunday the 14th. Details possibly to be decided at Bartley's, unless someone needs them decided earlier.

I can provide overnight sofa-ness for at least two people. Anyone who is fond of sleeping on floors is welcome to mine.

I can house someone as well. Though no garuntee's on condition of apartment... am moving into it monday. We could still be moving stuff around. Anyrate, can definetely sleep somone who needs a sleeping location.

Also, Bartleys is not only a burger place, it is ideally suited to the hatrack personality.

Anyhoo... I'll be there at 6. I think, Martha, the best plan is at 6:10 I'll see who is there, count noses, add 1, and then put our names in.

Posted by Paul Goldner (Member # 1910) on :

Oh yeah. Bartleys is on mass ave, just a hair outside harvard square. I'd say its right next to a book store, but since there are about 8 there, it doesn't help.

You can introduce yourself as "The creepy guy who is going to kidnap your daughter" though...

Ok. I can do that [Smile]

Hey, wildcard (*), e-mail me so we can figure things out for the drive up.

This is an overnight event with things the next day? hmm.... I think I'm going to be bothering Martha to crash at her place, but that I'll be driving elsewhere on Sunday. We'll see.

Hey, Beca, are you reading this? Are you coming? You'd better!

I know that on Sunday I'm hiking. I haven't decided which trail yet. If anyone wants to come, they're more than welcome. I promise to go your speed. [Wink]

So maybe the picnic on sunday will be Jamie's hike. I like that idea. There is a large park slightly north of town (15-min drive) where there are all sorts of trails, we can agree on one that works for everyone.

btw, Dragon, of course it's cool that you're bringing your mom -- maybe we can kidnap her and force her to join hatrack.

I have duct tape.

For hiking, I was thinking more along the lines of Mt Monadnock (1:36 from Boston). Get some views [Wink]

Or Blue Job Mtn (1:21), Mt Uncanoonuck (60 minutes, added benefit of being 10-15 min from my apt), Crotched Mtn (1:32)), Mt Watatic (1:27).

If we drive an hour or hour and a half, we get some mountains. If we're hiking in MA on the eastern seaboard, it's all flat. And flat hiking is terribly boring. [Wink]

If you want a compromise, the Holyoke range is great. Steep hills for MAck, drive-to mountain tops for me, and other pathetically out-of-shape ones. We could set up a picnic, and hike around the summit, then let the Mack Pack hike as far and fast as they want.

Great views. Great food.

oooooooo.

I just hiked Mt Monadnock yesterday! It was suprisingly fun (the last time I hiked it was in the pouring rain in 4th grade).

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

Hmm. Mountains are okay with me, as long as it's not a really long hike (three miles is probably my limit). Is there someone with a car who'd be interested in driving people up there from Boston?

I'm getting so confused now! Why all this changing of plans?!?!?!?!? [Grumble]

This is for SUNDAY. Saturday is Bartley's. I'm going on Saturday, then I'm going hiking on Sunday. If there are any Hatrackers who want to come along, they're welcome and I'll plan the hike to accomodate whoever. Martha suggested we do a hike as a Hatrack picnic thing. So yeah. Unconfused now?

OHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Okay.....nevermind....... [Blushing]

Hmmm, do you have a new e-mail address, Suneun? I keep having my e-mail returned when I try to send it to you.

Posted by Bokonon (Member # 480) on :

I'd be up for monadnock, maybe. I think it'd be a fair test of mack's and my own hiking speeds [Smile] Hopefully I'll be all unpacked from my move by then!

i so want to go, but only if i have some sort of money and can find these places in Boston...

Posted by Bokonon (Member # 480) on :

Syn, google and mapquest are your friends. If you can get to a T subway station, you can get to Harvard Square. From there it's no more than a 5-10 minute walk.

Bartley's:
1246 Mass. Ave.
Harvard Square, Cambridge
617-354-6559

That's all you need to use mapquest.

Damnit I may have to back out of this one. That'll make two I've missed! Arrrgh.

This weekend is shaping up to be rough, between work, taking the Praxis, and having a freelance deadline on monday.. If I get everything done by Friday, I may head on up, but it's looking doubtful now.

Arfg. Can't make it this time.

Mack, any time you want to run the Holyoke Range, let me know. I will drop you off and pick you up at points of your choosing, and take you out to lunch.

What the heck!?

Can we get a roster of who is going?

Posted by Paul Goldner (Member # 1910) on :

I'll be there with my brother.
I intend to get there at 6pm. I will be wearing blue jeans and, if it is cold, the same jacket I am wearing in the photos posted of me from when Billie, Ted, Jamie and I went to bartleys a couple years ago. If it is not cold, I will be wearing a salty dog cafe t-shirt. it is blue. And I will be standing outside bartleys. I am tall and gangly looking, so if you see a tall gangly guy outside bartleys, its probably me. I figure I stand out a bit, so gather around me, its probably easiest.

I'll be there, likely with my Stinko-Man t-shirt.

I'll be there... with a knapsack on my back!

Well, just a backpack. I have no idea what shirt I'll be wearing. Just look for the guy who looks like he just spent nine hours on a dirty, smelly bus. [Big Grin]

Am I going to be the only girl!? [Eek!]

and me, and my Mom...

Yup yup, I'll be there, most probably wearing orange and black (like a pumpkin [Wink] ).

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

I have no idea what to wear! [Eek!]

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

I will be there, albeit late. I'll just go in and look for a group of intellectuals having a good time. You'll know me by my t-shirt (that's all I'm saying).

Suneun doesn't know what she will be wearing (I would guess a Techhouse t-shirt).
Mike will wear his Varekai (Cirque du Soleil) t-shirt, which is bright red.
They will be accompanied by * and hopefully also by Beca.

A word to the people who are driving to this: wear walking shoes, because you may have to park FAR away.

I'll be there.... wearing something. I will undoubtably have a green backpack with a leather bottom on it. I'll probably also have a green jacket with me. I'm about 5'3" with brown hair and blond hi-lights. Yeah I know not whatelse to tell you

I talked to martha and mac on the phone from the picnic and they sounded like they were having a blast. Twelve people showed up! They said there will be pictures posted soon.

JaneX, Shlomo and I talked to mack and everyone too. [Smile]

Thanks for calling, it brightened up my evening. [Big Grin]
