Normally I would try to figure things like this out on my own, but I'm just not in the mood today and thought I'd see if anyone here knew anything about this.
I was having some trouble getting EasyCD Creator and DirectCD to work on my wife's computer last night, but discovered that WinXP has a built-in feature for writing to CDs. Just drag and drop and tell it to write. Once I had burned the CD, it seemed to work fine in her computer.
Now, however, I am trying to read the CD on my office computer (which runs Win2k) and it doesn't work. Trying to open the CD normally (i.e. double-clicking in the Explorer or switching to the drive via the command line) returns the message "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." DirectCD reports the media status as "CD-R with unrecognized data."
Any ideas?

I think it has something to do with finalizing the write process. XP leaves the disc in a still writeable mode so that you can continue to add files to it if it isn't full. Most other writing programs finalize the disc to not allow any other writing and to be readable on any system. That is my best guess anyway.

Same thing in any drive? The trick with those directCD and similar products (which is how the WinXP writer works, if I'm not mistaken) is the disk needs to be finalized to work in some drives. Someone familiar with XP's disk writer correct me if I'm wrong.

Have you made sure the cd drive can read other cd-roms? Other CD-Rs?

Thing is, I started by writing some files to another CD on her computer and then when I went to add moreit said the disk was closed. Additionally, at the end of the write process the dialog box displayed a message saying something along the lines of "Finalizing disk."

Also, since I haven't worked with a lot of CD-Rs, I don't know if this is still the case, but it used to be that some CD-Rs wouldn't read certain color cds.

Storm, yes. And the CD seems unreadable in my officemate's computer as well.
Clarification: Yes, my drive is working as it should with other CDs and CD-Rs. It's a pretty new computer so I doubt there would be any compatibility issues like you describe.

O.K. I know it was obvious question, but you didn't mention it and it's safer not to assume.
If it's not working in your officemate's computer, as well, then I would agree that it sounds like some kind of issue with the cd-rom drive, the cd itself, and/or the software on your wife's computer. Posted by Storm Saxon (Member # 3101) on :
One possible workaround that I've thought of if your wife is at home is to call her and just have her email the photos to your office computer. Yeah, if you don't have broadband, it will be really slow, but the option is there.

The whole point of putting a bunch of pictures on this CD was to avoid having to deal with how long it would take to upload them using my home dialup connection. But there may be no alternative at this point.
