This one isn't a joke, and this is where I curse myself for not noting carefully who all lives in LA.

I'm going to be there from Aug 21 - Aug 26, and the only day full is that Saturday.

Anybody want to play? Pop, Sandy, sara, ladyDove - will you be there? [Smile]

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

Wow. Guess I'm not as popular as I thought. [Smile]

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

And saxon! You're there? [Smile]

This is not a popularity contest. This means I have been bitterly avoiding the LA threads out of envy and a lack of masochism. I know Pop and Sandy and sara are there because they e-mailed me and told me. I KNEW there were more Hatrackers there. [Smile]

Yeah I'm down here. flish and rivka, too. I think I have that weekend open, although I need to check with the little woman. [Smile]

Oooh! I wanna meet kat! Yay! [Big Grin] (And spend more than a few minutes with the rest of y'all.)

At first I thought that you say you were only free on Saturday! [Eek!] But no, the opposite! Sunday would be great for me; Thurs, Mon, or Tues are all definite maybes.

I'd like to say that I will be in the area by then, but I don't know that for sure. Fate can throw me another curve ball [Mad] .

Cool kat!

I leave town on Aug 23 to spend a week in So Bend. I can do something anytime 8/21 or 8/22. Of course, I'd love to have you all over to my house.

Will 8/21 or 8/22 work for you guys?

Thusday (the 21st) is fine.

<-- hopes we're not doing Friday again, but can probably make it for a little while if we do.

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

I have to work on Friday, so Thursday is out for me, but I don't want to be my usual wet blanket self, so if Thursday works for y'all, you should probably have it then.

*wonders just how much Hatrack-live kat is up for* [Wink]

Maybe something on the 21st or 22nd at LD's, and something Sunday elsewhere? I'll offer my place, but it's smallish, and I think far from all of the rest of y'all. But I should be able to shoehorn all of you in. [Big Grin]

Posted by littlemissattitude (Member # 4514) on :

I can't say for sure yet if I'll be able to drive down. But I'd really love to. I've been planning on trying to get down there for a couple of days right around then as a sort of birthday present to myself (my bd is on the 23rd). I'll have to say yea or nay for sure a bit closer to the time, but at least put me down for really, really, really wanting to be there.

sounds good to me. I'll know after thursday what the rest of this month has in store for me, but I'm trying to delay starting my new gig until September.

that being said, call me Dr. Flake, as I will depart on a heartbeat to distant shores and silly adventures (read: I may be heading to mexico the last part of the month if I can get a head of steam up).

Wow... the last little while has been chock full of Hatrack gatherings! [Smile]

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Our place could be available at some point, too, although it's probably farther away than rivka's. We don't have anything cool like a waterslide, either. I can show you where the jacuzzi used to be, two homeowners ago.

But if it's planned far enough in advance, maybe I'll finally (after 3 years) level the pool table.

Very ok with more than one gathering.

*tries to imagine where to put a waterslide in her 3rd-floor apartment*

From the balcony down to the parking lot? No, I know -- from the walkway by my front door down to the pool on the first floor! [Wink]

Hmm, wonder if my landlord would go for that . . .

If there was something at Pop's, I would definitely try to make it, as then I wouldn't have to deal with L. A. traffic proper. Always a plus. Not that having it anywhere else would mean I wouldn't come, of course.

I just wish I could commit more securely, but after what happened last time (couldn't get away at the last minute), I feel like I need to see how things are going closer to the event.

I'll try to come. No promises.

Yay! This is great. And two get-togethers would be great - I'll be there for a long time, and I love my friend, but we haven't seen each other for a while. I suspect by Sunday, she might want a break from me. [Smile]

Will post details soon. [Smile] Yay!

oh, wow. I've not been at hatrack in ages, but had to start popping by to watch reactions to dave's Endercon Oddyssey. I'll be back at USC Aug 19, but would probably be settled and ready by the weekend. I'll be seeing Enter the Dragon (Bruce Lee's Best!) at the Egyptian on Aug 23 (my Birthday!) so I think that day was out, and on the 24 will probably go across the street to the Shrine auditorium for the comic con (Seth McFarlene, creater of Family Guy will be speaking). Perhaps Friday? I'm limited to where I can get via bus, but have gotten excellent at navigating just about anywhere in the city I want to go via public transportation. someone's house though, could be a problem/difficult... [Smile]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Adam, if it's somewhere out of L.A. proper, I'd be happy to give you a ride. I keep meaning to get to Notrica's (a market across from USC) anyway.

Of course, you should check my email address (in my profile) and see if you still want a ride . . . [Evil]

If it is at my place, it's not too bad to get here by bus, iirc.

Dude.

You suck.

You've been in LA all this time and haven't even let me make pervy come-ons to you?

(That goes for all of you, especially Moose, but also especially Kat. And here I thought she was from Texas.)

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Especially Moose? The one you recognized at a signing but did not approach? That Moose?

[Grumble]

Posted by Lalo (Member # 3772) on :

No, no. THAT Moose I didn't even recognize until well after I'd returned from the signing and made a fool of myself in front of the Cards. You, though, you're the manliest moose I know. I can almost see your long, thick, hard antlers raised against the moonlight, slightly curved but not so much as to be uncomfortable, and practically hear your bleat resound around me as I dream. Sigh. You're the only moose for me...

Definite: Kat is coming to L.A. and wants to meet up with local Jatraqueros. Locals wish to meet up with Kat. Two get-togethers will facilitate this process.

Undecided: Most other details. [Wink]

Get-together number one: Thurs (21st) or Fri (22nd)? Location has, I think, been decided.

Get-together number two: Where? My place and the Mooses' have both been suggested; there are presumably other options as well. Did we decide on Sunday (the 24th)?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

How about get-together #1 on Thursday? My friend wasn't expecting until Friday, so this leaves the two of those two days still.

Also, one on Sunday would be fabulous. Can I bring my friend? [Smile] [Smile]

Should I rent a car? How far away is everyone?

Has anyone seen Sandy? I need to hear from her. *thinks*

No lma? [Frown]

I think LadyDove needs to be the one to confirm Thursday. [Wink]

As far as Sunday, I'm fine if it's here or elsewhere -- do other people want to vote? Kat, where-ish will you be? As far as bringing someone along, I expect everyone's reaction will be, "The more the merrier!" Mine is. [Big Grin]

Posted by LadyDove (Member # 3000) on :

Thursday is fine for me. What time is good?

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Thursday is better traffic-wise, too, plus getting to spend more time with rivka is always a good thing (and are parenthehugs allowed?). Thursday pretty much means no Mama, but if it's early enough then I can bring Mooselet again. We just need to head out much earlier than I did last time. Doc, you bringin' your little-un and your better half?

For Sunday, our place is still available, but is probably farther than most people would want to travel -- we're an hour outside the closest end of L.A., and you'd be returning to L.A. with all the weekend inbound traffic. However, we also have a couple beds (one king, one twin, a sofa bed and another couch long enough for sleeping), and people are welcome to stay. Monday morning traffic won't be any better, of course....

Oh, I also vote for the "more the merrier" option regarding additional guests, specifically Kat's friend.

Cool! Anytime Thursday pretty much works for me. I assume it's ok to bring along my kidlets, yes?

If (((hugs))) are a problem, then I'm in BIG trouble. [Big Grin] I've been giving virtual hugs for about 16 years now . . .

As far as Sunday, I don't know where everyone is, exactly. And it wouldn't much help if I did -- I'm geographically impaired. So whether my place (in the Pico-Robertson area of Los Angeles, sort of West L.A., near Beverly Hills, and not far from Culver City and Santa Monica) is more or less convenient than Pop's will have to be figured out by someone without my disability. [Wink]

Posted by LadyDove (Member # 3000) on :

Of course kidlettes are welcome:)

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Yours is more convenient. Pretty much anyone who lives in L.A. or east or south or north (map north, not freeway north) of it lives closer to you than to me, and for the west folk, maybe Woodland Hills would be the midpoint. (I'm not trying to talk anyone out of visiting our house, mind you -- just facing the facts.)

Under the assumption (a reasonable one, I'd say) that it'll be at your place, would you like us to bring anything? (I'd ask you, Christine, but I already know your answer.)

--Pop

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Ok, thanks Pop for answering the geography question. [Big Grin] Guests! Yay! [The Wave]

As far as bringing things goes, I appreciate the sentiment, but please just bring your wonderful selves. [Smile] That reminds me -- any people with dietary restrictions coming? Vegetarians, vegans, whatever? Or allergies? And what time Sunday? I vote for starting sometime in the early afternoon, but earlier or later is also doable.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

No restrictions except cauliflower and okra, and that's just because I don't want to throw up at your house, not because of allergies. We're good with early afternoon (as in first choice), but also flexible when necessary, so whenever is good.

crud, i don't know if i can make it back down to LA that fast, kat. i might be moving down there eventually, but i have no real time line. due to extenuating circtumstances ( ex-new-stepdad was total fraud, jerk, and con artist [Grumble] , leaving me and the fam homeless for one hot minute, etc...will eventually get around to writing thread when i am not so tired.) i probably won't be able to slip back down south so soon. I think I'm going to rent a car, and I don't leave until Tuesday. My friend will need to work on Monday, which means I have a whole day free. Can I come to you?

Write me!

Today is a crazy day at work, so I won't be on the comp much. Will post and arrange and take notes and all things this afternoon.

I love you guys!!!!! [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

i would love to have another get together when i get back to LA, and if anyone wants to get together in norcal i should be around.

kat, my email is ellissara@hotmail.com
if tracy is not too far out of your way on the way to LA i wouldn't mind doing lunch [Smile]
it is super easy to get to LA from here, but tracy really is the middle of nowhere.

i'll post soon. things have actually been really good until today (brother exploded emotionally and was looking to beat me up but settled for spitting on me instead)so i am sorta at a loss for plans. if you are flying to LA or are coming from down south i do not suggest coming all the way to see me - i am five hours from LA.
i would really like to move down there but right now i think my mother really needs me emotionally not to mention help with paying the bills. we had to start from scratch, and though refreshing, it's not easy.
i have a new address and phone number i can provide on request. i also have unlimited long distance calling so if you ring me up i can call you right back.
hope to be posting regularly sometime in the not to distant future.
your sugar ninja love star,
porce

I have to work on Friday and I won't get off work on Thursday until 6 or 7, so I don't think Juliette and I will be able to make it on the 21st. But we ought to be able to do Sunday. Just let me know where; email address is in the profile.

Directions for Sunday have been sent to saxon and Moose. Kat, if you tell me where you'll be coming from, I can send you directions; otherwise, I'll just send you my address.

Who else needs directions?

Since no one else has suggested an actual time for Sunday, might I suggest one-ish, if that works for everyone?

kat-
What time does your flight get in on Thursday?

Moose- When you say "early" allows you to bring Carl, what time does early mean?

I'm pretty flexible, so I really have no preference except to want it to be as convenient for as many as possible.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Well, if I bring Mooselet, I really should leave by around 7:00. Thus, I'd hope for it to be early enough that I'd get to spend a good chunk o' time wit' the Shinda-ers. If it doesn't start until 5-6PM, I can probably get someone to watch Mooselet for the last couple of hours before Mama gets home, and I can stay much later. Bottom line, I'd be good with the time of the first one -- noon to one, or even earlier. Mooselet will probably go napless again if we do that, but even sleep-deprived he's a pretty agreeable kid.

Since some people actually have jobs, that time on a non-holiday Thursday might be pointless, though.

Ok, an 11:30 arrival time at LAX (or is it Burbank?) means making it out to where the cars are at about 12, most likely. Kat said something about renting a car, which takes time too. Plus time to get out to LadyDove's.

Of course, the rest of us could all already be there waiting . . . [Wink]

Pretty much any time works for me.

Okay, its the day after tomorrow. I was talking to my friend and explaining to her why I have plans for when I'm there. *grin*

Okay, according to my understanding, we are gathering at LadyDove's house on Thursday at 1:30. I have directions to her house in my e-mail.

Also, there is a shindig at rivka's on Sunday at 1:00pm. Is this correct? Sara and Emily may come?

Also, I need to write porce. I haven't yet. I'm doing that right now. I'm not sure why I'm posting this part, except perhaps as a public atonement.

Yup, my house, Sunday, one-ish. [Big Grin] Sandy said she will be coming, but it's moving day, so she'll be late. She was going to let me know about Emily.

Oh! And kat, I never emailed you directions, because you never told me where you'll be coming from. So I'll just email you a map. [Smile]

Looking forward to Thursday and Sunday. It is indeed, very cool. [Cool]

It was so nice to get to spend time with Kat. She is bright, warm and understated. When she called her friend and said she "lived" in Whittier, I knew she was comfortable. [Smile]

rivka- It was wonderful to get the time to chat one-on-one. I'm so glad you brought your kids (I just love their names!)

Mike, Juliette, Pop and Carl were their normal charming selves.

Ralphie made a phone in appearance (it just wouldn't have been a Shinda without her ) Ralphie, just in case you were wondering, Kat can take Jake's room, the guest room is still yours. [Kiss]

Sorry this is so brief, but I wanted to say thank you to everyone before leaving on vacation.

Pfff. Ralphie's trying to cover up her loserness by acting like she's too good to talk to me on the phone.

Anyway, I ended up getting very few photos this time around, but Juliette managed to get a completely precious one of Mooselet and rivka's daughter.

John totally schooled me at air hockey. He was crowned King Biggie Super Mega Ultra Champion of Shinda III Air Hockey. Paul also thoroughly destroyed me. I made myself feel better by beating everyone else. (::thumps chest:: Me big strong man!)

Christine and Paul, thanks again for having us over. You are among the most hospitable people I've ever encountered and I really enjoyed myself both times. I hope you have a wonderful time on your vacation!

LadyDove and rivka were absolutely wonderful hosts, Papa Moose has the ability to embarass me with my own words as easily in person as at Hatrack [Wink] , and Mooselet is completely darling, with long eyelashes that place him in the "veritably to be envied" category. It was great to meet saxon75 and Juliette, and to see Mama Squirrel again. Julliette and Mama Squirrel need to post much more often. I'm sorry I missed the other LA Hatrackers - LA will call to me again, I'm sure. This was a fabulous trip. [Smile]

I also got to spend lots of time with my friend, and that was great. I figure that waking time was about 60 hours for the vacation, and we talked for almost 50 of that. I'm exhausted. It was wonderful. [Smile] I need sisters, dangit.

We were college roommates for just three months one summer, but this was a "renewing old ties" trip that was completely worth it. She's in the biochemistry doctorate program at UC Riverside working on multiple sclerosis, and I got to go in with her one day and inject mice with cells and protein. Very fun. Almost made me miss the lab; my research was much, much more boring. My friend is getting married in a month, and while she's not really into internet interaction, she's going to try to send her husband here. [Smile]

I AM trying to block out the last 24 hours, though. I got to the airport in time for my 10:30 flight to discover the flight actually left at 2:30; I'd remembered wrong. This is not fun, but not tragic - I have certainly made the same mistake before, only then the flight left four hours before I got to the airport. Once everyone was boarded on the plane, we were informed of bad weather at the destination airport and it was better to wait on the runway in California instead of in the air at Dallas. They kept saying "just 30 more minutes", so the result was two hours on the runway. Did you know the airconditioner doesn't work correctly on ground power?

Flight was fine. We landed at 9:30pm. Due to a very long line of planes waiting for gates, we finally exited the plane at 2:00am, and that was out the back and onto the runway. A friend was picking me up, and she stayed at the airport from 9:00pm to 2:00am. I need to make her cookies.

The airport charged her for five hours of parking.

This morning, I got a flat tire on the way to work. The tire was ruined and needed to be replaced. I'm just blocking out the past 24 hours. [Smile]

It's nice to be back! [Group Hug]

Welcome back to Hatrack, though in person you're pretty cool, too.

Next time there's a gathering, I really need to bring a notepad. There are such wonderful "out of context" opportunities every time.

[Eek!] I would block them out too! [edit: kat's unfortunate 24 hours, not the out of context opportunities -- those are great] Glad you made it back safe, though.

It was great seeing you in person, and you surely will come back again -- we're definitely going to hold you to that. [Big Grin]

It was great meeting you too, Kat. I'm sorry about all the traveling troubles and the flat tire. What a horrible welcome home. Its good that you enjoyed your trip to L.A. though.
I'm looking forward to seeing all of you again soon.
-Juliette
