This past June, I spoke at my high school commencement. I wasn't the valedictorian -- our high school selects speakers based on tryouts. I've been wanting to share my speech with Hatrack, but I was waiting until I could get the home video my parents took onto my computer.

So, if you're at all interested in seeing my speech (even if you just want to find out what I look like [Wink] ), or reading it, you can.

Kasie's Commencement Speech

Please forgive the random zooming and camera movement -- amateur home video is only so good. [Wink]

Oh, and the coughing near the end. I've been telling my uncle to quit smoking for ages...

So I hope you enjoy it, despite the quality issues.

--Kasie--

(I'm almost as nervous posting this as I was when I made the speech the first time...must be because Hatrack's a tougher audience...)

I would also like to add that I was unhappy with the first paragraph of my speech, which is why it sounds amazingly worse than the rest of it. I just couldn't come up with anything suitable to replace it. [Frown]

*Grin*

Nicely done.

Thatta girl. We are in want of a "proud" Graemlin, so how about this: [Cool] + [Hat]

"We should take counsel of our courage and not of our fears."

-Adlai Stevenson

Edit:

Paul is from Mass., and I think it was the Kennedy line that sold him. Paul and I are of a hard generation, born in the seventies, tempered by big hair rock, disciplined by hard and bitter grunge, and proud of our disco and funk heritage.

Quick Question: Why did you omit the "to friend and foe alike"? I know that you aren't battling communism, but we are in a silent struggle against those who mistrust people devoted to ideas and wisdom, unless it is that kind of obsolete idea that passes itself off as common sense.

Paul & Twinky -- I'll have to ask my boyfriend first [Wink]

Irami, Thor, Jeni, Ralphie -- thanks, I'm glad you liked it [Smile]

(On a side note.... [Hail] the Hatrack Goddess approves!! [Big Grin] )

Irami,

I left out the 'friend and foe alike' because the crowd would have seen it as a reference to terrorism and war in Iraq. Making sure the speech was not about the war was very important to me -- I wanted to acknowledge it without focusing on it. I think using the quote the way I did, instead of including that phrase, helped to do that.

Yes, yes, no need to hail. Of course I approve. [Cool]

What are the odds that she owns @kasie_hunt or something? Just saying.

Posted by Jeni (Member # 1454) on :

She's @kasie. But I vaguely recall that she didn't want people to be able to associate her with hatrack for professional reasons.

Well, we can leave it at that, but if anyone does know her behind the scenes, please tell her we are impressed and proud. She's always been an amazing woman, and it's splendid to see the bloom on that branch.
