Coming home tonight from hiking near Lake Sutherland up past the Olympics, I got home and was unloading my car when I heard a bunch of planes going overhead. Now, as you all remember from my "Increased Military Activity" thread, you know that I live in Puyallup, about 20 minutes away from the biggest military bases in the northwest. I looked up expecting to see a formation of huge transport planes (C1-41s and C-5s) coming in for a landing, and I swear, I still do not believe what I saw.

I saw this fairly large (for being way up in the sky) ball of yellow light which I figured at first was Venus, since it was roughly near the right position, etc. THEN, the 5 planes I saw (which werent hefty cargo planes, they were much smaller) veered directly left toward the yellow object. THEN, when the first and lowest plane was getting close, the object seemed to project a kind of rough, crooked and split beam of light resembling lightning toward the first plane and the first plane's lights dissappeared and I could no longer see it. My brothers, dad and uncle all saw this (mom was inside).

I still don't know what to do think or say to anyone, we all feel a little weird. I must admit, I didn't really have anyone to tell this to at this hour that I didn't want immediately calling me crazy so hatrack please be gentle eh?

woa..interesting.. i say one of you should sketch it out while its still fresh in your mind. If you should come across another drawing that similar, on the news or in a book or something then, you'll know there's something to it. Just a thought.

Man, that's interesting!

Sometimes I watch those programs on Discovery about unknown flying objects, and I remember them saying that people see those far more often than reported. Because of fear of not being taken seriously.

Why do these things only happen in the US? Sigh. I wish I would see something like that.

By the way, could this have been a military exercise with some new device?

Well, I doubt sheer insanity is the cause, since you say 4+ members of your family saw it.
The easiest explanation is that if it looked like lightning, it was lightning.
What were the atmospheric conditions?
Were the planes in a tight formation?
How far away would you estimate the ball and the planes from you?
What altitude? Hard to estimate, I know.
It could have been ball lightning (which I know nothing about) turning into the normal forked variety, striking the plane and frying its lights.
Before you say you didn't hear thunder, one fact: because of temperature and density differences at different altitudes, the atmosphere refracts thunder up and away from the Earth, like a cone or paraboloid pointing up from the lightning.
This could explain why you didn't hear thunder.
Hmmm, you say the planes were close enough to hear . . .
If it was a short lightning stroke, the sound could have been masked by the noise of the planes.
Also, I think the refracting effect is stronger for low frequency sound like thunder.

Or it could have been something really freaky, like some new military weapon or a UFO.
If any Men in Black show up, look away from their memory neutranizers!! [Eek!] [No No]
