So OSC's come out and said he'd love to see Dakota Fanning as Petra--and quite frankly, I agree.

But what I REALLY hope is that his appreciation of her will persuade him to see I Am Sam, an absolutely fantastic film, that is NOT, as he fears, just a chance for Sean Penn to show his chops as an actor. The film actually uses his condition as a really touching allegory for the incompetence all of us feel as new parents.

My first daughter was born in the cardiac unit at Loma Linda, where my wife was in for heart troubles, and they released the daughter before they released my wife. Being under 18, they wouldn't let her set foot in the cardiac unit, so for two days and nights my wife couldn't see her baby, and I was home alone with her, with no knowledge of how long this arrangement would last.

So I think I bawled through about the first third of this movie. It tells the truth, I think, in every way that matters.

(And as for Card's endorsement of Fanning, I hope that, rather than exploding into a HJO/JL frenzy, we can all just take heart in the fact that her existance proves there ARE competent child actors who can fill roles like this, irregardless of whether or not she'd be "perfect" for the role.)

Dakota Fanning was really good in I Am Sam, but that wouldn't stop OSC from hating it, and I'm pretty sure that he would hate it.

Gosh, I don't think he would. It makes me sad that he won't see it. I just watched this movie again last night. Of course I'm impressed with Sean Penn, but I think the most touching if not piercing performance was that of Michell Pfeifer. Holy moly, she was so so real in that role. The part in the coffee shop towards the end where Sam says something like "I can be your friend. I'm your friend" and she furtively looks to the side, trying to hold back tears and then looks him in the eye and says "Thank you." Wow. That's what I think acting really is. She was amazing in that movie.

I loved that movie. It was very well done. And yes, the acting was amazing.

That movie was ok... but it had too much ad placement which I hate. It also didn't seem that much different from The Other Sister which annoyed me.

I really, really, don't think he would hate it.

In fact, I'd be willing to bet on it. If he watched it, and truly didn't like it, I'd be forced to ghostwrite the final Alvin book for him.

But if he watched it, and he did like it, then he'd have to ghostwrite my first novel for me.

Or maybe I'd just bet dinner at the Brazilian restaurant in West Covina the next time he comes to Pasadena.
