Why is it that every time I'm on AIM (which I just downloaded and installed), my bytes recieved and sent steadily increases without me doing anything? When I disconnect from AIM, it stops....

Do you have the stock ticker turned on?

How do you think AIM tells if people are trying to contact you, or if any of your contacts are online? Every few seconds, it pops out to check.

Probably the ads as well.
Here's a way to remove them:
Find the AIM installation folder (usually C:\program\files\aim95\) Delete advert.ocm Copy admin.ocm Change the name of your copy to advert.ocm
Otherwise, you can get deadaim

I did have the stock ticker on! Turning it off stopped the bytes from streaming. Now they just pulse every few seconds.

Or you could just get trillian....
