(in the key of E minor)

Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine
I like sandwiches, I eat them all the time.
I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch-
If I had a hundred sandwiches, I'd eat them all at once.

I'm a-roamin' and a-ramblin' and a-wanderin' all along
And if you care to listen I will sing a happy song
I will not ask a favor and I will not ask a fee,
But if you have a sandwich, won't you give a bite to me?

Oh! Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine
I like sandwiches, I eat them all the time.
I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch-
If I had a hundred sandwiches, I'd eat them all at once.

Once I went to Enlgand, visited the Queen
I'll say she was the grandest lady I have ever seen
I told her she was beautiful, I could not ask for more,
She handed me a sandwich and she threw me out the door.

Yes, sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine
I like sandwiches, I eat them all the time.
I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch-
If I had a hundred sandwiches, I'd eat them all at once.

A sandwich may be egg or cheese or even peanut butter,
But they taste so good to me, it hardly even matters.
Jam or ham or cucumber, and kind will do.
I like sandwiches, how about you?

(everybody now!)
Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine
I like sandwiches, I eat them all the time.
I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch-
If I had a hundred sandwiches, I'd eat them all at once!

I was just eating a sandwich and thinking that I wished I could hear a song about it.

Once upon a time in Salt Lake City, I ate a sandwich at Tony Caputo's that was so good it made me cry.

It was fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, fresh basil and balsamic vinaigrette on crusty Italian bread. It sang to me from its little styrofoam perch in that sweet, sweet basilly voice.

Its innocent presence persisted long after the last crumbs of it were licked up and its wrapper discarded. It became a part of me and now travels with me everywhere I go.

May be none of my business, but you really should see a doctor about that Annie. If that sandwhich has been in your lower intestine this long, who knows what kinda havok it's wreaking? [Dont Know] [Eek!]

Annie... first off... are you trying to torture us late night Jatraqueros? [Grumble]

Secondly, I think you just might as well admit it. You want to open an old fashioned Sammich (that is the proper spelling) Shoppe. Well, I think you may have your first investors and customers right here.

I could expand the ice cream business - but that's a lot of man-hours we're talking about. Hmmm...

And don't worry Javert - we've got a nice symbiotic relationship going.

Tres bien, Annie! Now sing it in French, food translator girl. [Razz]

My frosh Hnrs Eng. teacher taught me that song! *sigh* Thanks for the memories, I really needed that, at this point.

It's even funnier when your friends' 45 year old mothers are doing a Russian dance to it, and every chorus is punctuated with "Hey!"

Yeah, my mom's almost forty-five...I am SO going to teach her the song, and get her to do it! Thanks for the idea ^_^

I think I'll learn to play the balalaika just so I can accompany the sandwich song.

Sandwiches are currently one of the few things that consistently make me happy. Actually, the things that consistently make me happy are food surprisingly often. One summer during my college years, I went to my favorite restaurant with Juliette and had a pork chop. It was so good that for over a year later all I had to do was think about that pork chop and I would smile. It was actually so good that I was scared to have it again, because I knew the second time wouldn't measure up. Sadly, I was right.

So these days I just stick with sandwiches.

One of my friends is sandwich people. Everything is better to him if it's in sandwich form.

When he and his wife started Atkins, he was miserable because sandwiches were out. His children pointed out that if he used steak in place of bread, he'd still be following the rules.

Happy Sandwich Days are here again!

Sandwiches. A filling between two pieces of bread. Only more than that.

You know what's tasty? I nice, footlong Veggie on Honey Oat with EVERYthing on it, from Subway....only costs like five bucks, too, and it's wonderful..... *drools*

Too bad I'm poor, now....**sniffle**

Mikey - You're right, of course.

That also makes me think of Blackadder (as so many things do):

Blackadder: "Baldric, just put some meat between two slices of bread for me, will you?"

Baldric: "Oh, you mean like Gerald, Lord Sandwich had the other day?"

Blackadder: "Yes, that's right. Two orders of 'Geralds' for me."

I can't take credit for the rhyme, it's just somethign i remembered from 3rd grade music class. Fun though.

I'm usually a sandwich purist and don't put any of that scary whitey fatty condiment crap on them, but I've discovered something new and exciting:

There's this brand (maybe it's local, I don't know) of salad dressing called Drew's, and they make a rosemary garlic vinaigrette. So my new super sandwich consists of:

Ciabbatta bread from On The Rise bakery (a real brick oven!)

Smoked turkey

Provolone or farmer's cheese

Drew's rosemary garlic vinaigrette

Fresh sliced roma tomatoes (salted evr so slightly)

Green leaf lettuce

... it's the best thing you'll ever eat.

I had a really good sandwich last night. It was called a cuban sandwich and I don't know all the ingredients but let me just say it was mouthwatering.

Mmmmm! [Smile]

I thought about posting about Cuban sandwiches, or their slightly better cousins, medianoches.

[Smile]

I hope yours was made right; it's getting dang hard to find a good Cuban sandwich, since they're all made by Nicaraguans or Puerto Ricans these days. [Frown]

The correct ingredients: 3/4 inch ham, 3/4 inch sliced pork, several slices of swiss cheese, pickle slices sliced the long way, and mustard, all on pressed Cuban bread. (Do you Americans press any of your sandwiches? Do you even know what I'm talking about? It's like a waffle iron, but with smooth flat surfaces, that heat and press the sandwhich.)

If the sandwhich is less than 3 and a quarter inches tall you are getting ripped off.

A medianoche is the same sandwhich but on a sweet roll instead of Cuban bread. While I generally love Cuban bread, I prefer a medianoche because it's not quite so crusty.

The mustard should be between the swiss cheese and the bread. Many places no longer serve Cuban sandwiches with mustard, either because Nicaraguans don't like them that way, or because they don't want to get their sandwhich presses dirty. The sad thing is that now many people don't know the correct recipe for the sandwich at all. This is lamentable, but I can deal with it.

If someone serves you a Cuban sandwich or medianoche with mayonaise in it, you should return after closing and burn the place down.

Thanks Icarus, That was exactly how mine was made. It was ever pressed which should make you happy. I ate it at a little Cuban type restaraunt a few blocks away. I had been there many times for coffee but had never eaten the sandwiches before. I'm glad I did.

I almost put my fist through the tv when Jeff Smith, the "Frugal Gourmet" went to Tampa (!) to do an episode about Cuban food. He went to the restaurant closest to the airport. He pointed out--with a self-satisfied wannabe intellectual air--that unlike Mexicans, Cubans don't call tameles "tamal-EEs," we call them "tamal-EHs." (Um, Mexicans don't call them "tamal-EEs" either; only Americans do that.) He then showed how to make "black bean soup." Um, Cubans don't eat black bean soup; only Americans do that. We pour our black beans over white rice. And then he showed how to make a Cuban sandwich--wrong!

[Mad]

I had never before realized that Jeff Smith was an idiot, a sham, and a poseur.

[Mad]

[Frown]

Paint me disillusioned.

I grew up on that show. Honestly, when the other kids were through watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I would quietly turn on The Frugal Gourmet.

<------ is beginning to realize how warped she has been from the beginning.

I used to love his stories! No other cooking show has ever interested me, but Smith would always go on with all kinds of neat tales about he history of this or that particular food, the time it was served for this visiting dignitary, how it was brought from one continent to another, what it symbolized for the ancients, etc. etc. etc. Whatever else he was, he was entertaining. That stupid Bam! guy can't hold a candle to him. [Smile]

But when he actually talked about something I knew about, that's when I realized he was a fraud. [Frown]
