Especially if it was up the road from my house, or perhaps in a neighboring city, or something of that nature. You know accessible to little old odouls.
Utah was just too far to run. Even for me who often will walk up the escalator instead of just ride it.

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

Really though, we could have n00bie initiation rituals involving pudding wrestling, Old fogey thread trivia games, A room dedicated to homosexual marriage debates (firearms optional), A meme lecture from the experts here the 'rack,
Auditions for the Hatrack movie.
We could invite Haley Joel Osmont and Jake Lloyd, it'd be awesome.

David - You know you have this odd pattern of showing up, posting so prolifically it bends the mind, proposing things like this, and then promptly disappearing again for the next four to six months.

I've been meaning to ask, why is this?

Posted by Erik Slaine (Member # 5583) on :

Actually, thinking of cons I've been to in the past, wouldn't there be a costume contest?

"Oh, look. Someone else has dressed up as Ralphie. Boy, that rack is pretty convincing!"

Yes. Yes it would. [Party]

Ralphie,
who are you?
[Razz]

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

Just kidding dear. It's because I work a great great deal. For the past year I've never had fewer than three jobs at once, (i topped out at 5) but I am still a hatcrack addict. Right now I'm down to two jobs and one of my jobs affords me the opportunity to be at a computer for a significant portion of the day. Today it just so happens that I dont have much else to do, so here I am, with veins ready for the sweet Hatsmack.

So you're saying you love my idea right?
[Razz]

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

Heck yeah ES, a costume contest, dress up like your favorite reviewer that bashed episode 1

and a Damien lookalike contest (wont be able to take pictures of that one though, damien doesnt show up on film)

and a Hatrack writers' workshop. Itll be a two day con with a massive dry erase board for writing threads and replies on, since none of us could go cold turkey for two DAYS

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

we're not abandoning the pudding wrestling are we? That's got to stay.

Posted by Erik Slaine (Member # 5583) on :

I think we'd be talking LAN instead of dry-erase. At gaming cons it's all the rage....

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

absolutely not. in fact, we've already begun plans to expand the pudding wrestling from just being a noobie initiation to a full fledged royal rumble. we're working on hammering out the brackets now. I'll take on anybody. Except porce. that girl is as tough as she is cute. Id get whooped inside of 5 seconds, 2 smacks and a three second count.

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

Ok ES, youre now in charge of the setting up of the LAN for the Hatcrack addicts like myself.

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

Let's get moving people! we have to get cracking if we want this thing to come together by next summer!
[Razz]

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

In true Hatrack style, I think we should mention it now, let a bunch of people express interest, have one really dedicated person work really hard on it around late June, hold the event in July, and surprise the hosts by having about half the expected attendance. [Smile]

That sounds really cool. When you say close to your house, what state are you talking? Utah's a little far (ok, a lot far) for me too, but knowing my luck this would end up being even farther away.

Posted by Frisco (Member # 3765) on :

I'll only go if there's a newbie leash-and-muzzle law.

I'd be willing to bend on the leash part if we were able to rent a sufficient number of cages.

Yes, in the midwest, but we wouldn't want to shut out those of the west. Clearly the Gateway to the West is the proper location.

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

it was my idea to begin with, so i veto the midwest idea. itll be held in greensboro north carolina, up the street from my house, like the original plan calls for.
[Razz]

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

St. Louis wouldn't be bad, actually, although it's not exactly an overwhelmingly interesting or attractive city. It IS central, though, and airfare's pretty reasonable from most locations.

If not the Midwest, a major air hub would make logical sense -- Denver or New York, for example. Chicago, IMO, is the best of both worlds, but I'm also biased.

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

Ok, apparantly we're going to have to resort to pudding wrestling for this one as well.

Louisville has an international air port, and is sort of close to the midwest, and we can buy lots of pudding here. Ok I got that out of my sytem, since I'm the only one here it probably won't be here, but the midwest makes sense.

Since I'm likely still considered a newbie, who will have the other end of a newbie's leesh? [Confused] assuming there is a shortage of cages. Also do we have to provide our own leash and muzzle?

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

Greensboro has an international airport.
And by jingo we can get all the pudding we need right here.

Ok, but I'm still wondering about the leash and muzzle law.

Posted by hugh57 (Member # 5527) on :

You may get your wish, odouls. I was at the Lexington, KY signing recently and I asked OSC if they woud be doing any more Cons such as Endercon. His reply was that one problem existed - Endercon lost money. So if they were to do that again, it would likely be in Greensboro, NC where he could save on hotel expenses.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Clearly Cons can make money.

One good way I've seen to start up new Cons is to do them as a sub-Con initially. It means giving up a certain amount of control, but if you're not going to be doing one otherwise, that's usually an acceptable tradeoff.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

I'd definitely come to a Midwest one, and if the timing was right, I might even be able to swing a NC one.

It's really far from me (relative to others in the U.S., though I realize it's closer than for some out-of-country-ers), but I'd do my darndest to figure out a way to get there. And if I put "definitely will attend" on the survey, then I'll pay for it even if I don't go, unlike some people who contributed to Endercon resulting in a financial loss. *grumble grumble, but mentioning no names*

I'd like to point out that the presence of an international airport does not, in fact, indicate the presence of a major air HUB. The reason I specified the latter is that plane tickets to major hubs -- like La Guardia/JFK, Denver, Reagan, LAX, or O'Hare -- are cheaper than tickets to smaller airports.

Heh...Ralphie and I have talked about this occasionally, and we both agreed that it should be at your place in STL, fugu.

I'd be up for a Greensboro con, or anywhere in the Midwest (I'm in Cincinnati). It'd be a lot closer than Orem, UT. I made it to Utah, but it was quite a haul, and an adventure, considering that my Jeep broke down in Denver, and I had to rent a car for the last leg from Denver to Orem.

Greensboro is far . . . hmm.

Although I do have a long-time friend I haven't seen in two years in the Research Triangle, not to mention 3 online friends from another board I'd love to meet.

Call me a "definite maybe." [Big Grin]

How about Washington, D.C.? There's tons to do here (for very little money...Smithsonian anyone?), hotels in Virginia and Maryland aren't excessively expensive (compared to the ones in the District, and especially compared to NYC), and we are accessible to no fewer than THREE major international airports (and hubs): Dulles, Reagan, and BWI. It's accessible by train from North, South, and maybe even Chicago (I'd have to check on that one).

Considering that a lot of the stuff we talk about here is legislated from this city, I can't think of a better place! Plus I live here... [Big Grin]

I would love an excuse to go to DC. Everywhere you're talking about is really really far, but I would try really hard to get wherever it would be...so we might as well make it somewhere GOOD!!

My votes are for DC or Chicago. [Smile]

You know that I have an OrneryCon every summer in Dayton Ohio. All you have to do is join Ornery and you are invited. I had 8 members show up last year and I am hoping to have 10-12 members show up this year. I have even invited the Cards. Of course I have invited the Card's the past two years and they have not shown up, but hope springs eternal.

Yeah, I'm thinking DC or Chicago, too. The only compelling reason to do the Carolinas would be a possible OSC appearance.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Depends on a few things for me to be there, the main of it being time/money. I got a mission coming up soon to think about. Midwest in June/July might work out, and heck, I might even talk myself into Greensboro in June/July.

Also hotels costing money, and figuring out transportation, and that sort of thing.

But, I will think of going. Put me in the "wanting to" category for the time being, if we are having categories.

And darn it, CT, I wants me some butt sniffin' at this thing.

Posted by LadyDove (Member # 3000) on :

If So Cal is an option, I'd be happy to host. Any week in the summer is good except the week of June 26th.

The nice thing about being in my backyard is that there's no entrance fee.

If So Cal doesn't work, then my next pick would be Chicago; preferably the week immediately before or after June 26th.

Mark has a pretty good point. Why not coincide Hatrackcon with Ornerycon? Plus, you might convince Mark to bump the date back a bit -- mid-July through late August, preferably -- and I can tap the Con on my maybe kinda sorta future bike trip around the US.

I think finding a few responsible people to be in charge is going to be a big factor in deciding a location.

I took a taxi in DC and they charged me twice as much as they should have, they knew it, we knew it, and our chaperones couldn't get them to lower the price. Where everyone else was charged $12-15 we got charged $26. And she had no clue what she was talking about the entire taxi ride.

Posted by odouls268 (Member # 2145) on :

Make a point of negotiating the price of the ride prior to entering the cab to begin with. If you're not in a giant hurry, and the driver wont come down off of an absurd price, A simple "No way. Have a nice day." Will either bluff them into coming down or they'll leave and you'll be able to flag down another cab who may give you a lower price.

Eddie,

I pretty much have the date for OrneryCon set as June 19. It is just after school gets out and before it starts getting hot up here. Trust me you don't want to have a party outside in Ohio in July or August.

It also would not be fair to the Ornery people to combine a Hatrack party at the same time. All you Hatrackers would just have to go to Ornery, register and make one post. Then you would be considered Ornery people and could come to the party.

If you are interested in the OrneryCon, go to Ornery and search on the OrneryCon III thread. It has all the details. The OrneryCon II thread also has the pictures of me being set on fire at OrneryCon II.

It's kind of funny; I've been thinking about what it would take for a true Hatrack Get-Together for a couple of months now, and was thinking about doing some research on what it takes to put together a con.

Pros for LA: Many choices of venue, second largest city in the US, major international airport, plentiful hotels, agreeable climate for the vast majority of the year, plenty of activities for before and after the actual convention, definite attendance of saxon75.

Cons for LA: Nearly non-existant public transportation, lots of traffic, possibly long drives, saxon75 not nearly as good in person as online.

I'd really love to attend a big Hatrack function, but I doubt I'd be able to do any long-distance travelling in any reasonable timeframe.

So, is anyone thinking this might actually happen?

A few questions to get the ball rolling:

Are we thinking about a real convention, or just a big get-together?

If we are thinking about a real convention, what sort of venue are we looking for? A city convention center? A university arts center? A community center? Somebody's back yard?

How long? Just an afternoon, or a whole weekend? Something in between?

How many booths, if any? What sort of vendors might we invite?

Guest lectures/speakers? Panel discussions? Who? How many?

What sort of theme?

I vote Boston! Or NYC. Or Philli. Any farther and there's no chance I can go. What am I talking about, there's almost no chance of me not having something planned and talking my parents into letting me go and getting a ride there. :sigh:

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

In my opinion, an actual convention would be a bad idea; it'd add a lot of hassle and wouldn't actually add much benefit. Hatrackers are notoriously disorganized and/or competitive, and I've noticed that just sitting around chatting with fellow forumites is often far more enjoyable than any actual EVENTS going on.

If more than ten or twelve people showed interest, it would probably be worth obtaining a number of adjacent hotel rooms; a smaller number might well be hosted by locals. Obvious activities would include music, massage, video gaming, roleplaying, poetry readings, crosswords, and book discussions, but things like shopping, canoeing or hiking might well be popular depending on the site.

In any case, a multi-day event would probably be required; it wouldn't be worth flying or driving out for a single evening.

Posted by Nick (Member # 4311) on :

I'm okay with NYC. I have a friend who lives on Long Island that would let me stay with him.

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

To my mind, the main benefit of an actual convention or something similar is that it has the best chance of actually bringing in a lot of people. I have been thinking for the past couple of months of how to actually pull off getting a a large group of Hatrackers together, given that we are dispersed throughout the country (and world). I couldn't think of anything that would be a big enough draw that didn't include some sort of concrete activities and/or celebrities.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Realistically, we're not going to get more than thirty people -- period. And given thirty people, there's no way any actual halls can be rented or celebrities paid to attend.

I actually think I could save up the money for the trip myself. There are a couple of things in the way, like: getting a visa without a pernament job (I only have a contract till February), not knowing if I don't move out for half a year in April, and not knowing if I get the vacation time at all if I stay working where I work right now. I'm slowly sorting things out, though, and maybe I'll know some thing early next year.

I need to point out a personal big pro for Chicago as a site:

I might actually get to go if I'm not scheduled to be out of town on business. (I might even have managed to convert Diane to being an OSC fan by then - I've convinced her to try "Seventh Son" for her next excursion in leisure reading.)

OK - that's only a "pro" for me - could even put Chicago on the "con" side for someone else. [Wink]

Hoping not, though...

Instead of one big con, we could have a whole bunch of little ones... four at least: east coast, west coast, south and north.

Or wait, that would be 'get togethers'. Ah, well. There goes that idea.

What we COULD do, then, is have a big one in a rotation: East coast one year, west coast the next, so on and so forth. We could decide which city would be convenient for the most people, and if you can't go one year, they'll be a higher chance of you being able to go the next, because it might be closer.

On the down side, if you can't make it to the one close in your area, you might have to wait four years.

Correlle agrees with me on this though: It's not a win/win situation. This way, we could meet Jatraqueros in our general area, and a few long-distance people.

On the upside, it's better than having it in one central place every year, and more people can't come.

of course, if this does get put together and it's not in gboro, or NC at least, then there's almost no chance of me getting to go which would stick in my craw if i didnt get to go to the hatrackcon that i pudding wrestled in the first place

[Razz]

If we do decide to do this, and its gonna b here in gboro, ill be more than glad to step up and do some planning events and logistics type things. i really do know a couple live bands that we could easily get to play for some entertainment, we could have a big screen tv playing episode 1 with a big message board scrolling in real time that people could type theyre comments and critiques into. [Razz] or maybe a LAN chat room instead. [Razz]

We could get some of the talented hatrack actors to do readings from OSC novels, have a debate room where teams of hatrackers are asssigned topics and given an hour to formulate arguments and then they can go at it (who should play ender in the movie etc. [Razz] ) and if the discussions get too heated the audience can vote to have it settled by pudding deathmatch.

CT,

When I said good public transportation, I meant the Metro (subway system). It absolutely rocks -- I live downtown, don't have a car, and go can pretty much anywhere I might need to. And I'm sure the bus system is really extensive, as well, although I've never used it. You can check out bus and metro routes at http://www.wmata.com/.

other threads are popping up with ideas for the HatrackCon, as well as ideas for where it should be etc. That makes me happy. Not as happy as Family Guy possibly coming back on the air, but still, happy.
[Razz]

Any suggestions for OSC related events that we should have at the Con?
I related some of my ideas above, but as we've all observed in history past, my ideas always suck.

Chicago would work pretty well for me. Boston wouldn't be bad either. Washington could be okay.

Everywhere sucks for me. American Airlines and SouthWest are both based here, and they have local politics in a death grip. It's literally 50% higher than any other airport of comparable size in the country.

If it was in Chicago, I might even be able to go, which would be excellent. Otherwise, probably you could count me out... Is there any info on when this would be?

It has to be far enough away in time that it won't interfere with Wench Con, I know there are people who would probably like to go to both and I don't think they should be forced to chooose one or the other because it isn't fair to the WenchCon planners.

I'm definitely going to WenchCon, and I need to go to California in March or April. Please don't make me choose!

Or have it in California. We could meet Superstation!

I still think we should have it in Greensboro.
And beg OSC to come.

I agree with AJ. I would love a Hatrack Con, but the chances of me going to both Wench Con and a Hatrack Con in the same year are slim to nil.

And I am defnitely going to Wench Con. [Smile]

Perhaps it would be good to plan the Con for a year from now....

The MLK Jr. weekend seems to work well for Wenches. Would MLK Jr. weekend 2005 work out for Hatrack Con?

I would love to go to a hatrackcon. It would probably have to be in the summer, though. At any rate, if it isn't going to be on the West Coast, then I have very little preference. I can see some advantages to holding it in Greensboro (getting the Cards to show up) and some to holding it in major hub cities (easier to fly everyone in. I also like the idea of having a rotating convention. According to OSC, Portland has a great downtown. Everyone should come to the Pacific Northwest and see how great it is!

Tom, don't you think it would be much more expensive to ship a large and delicate computer over here than a person? Surely you don't think that Kama is real. But if it only costs $20 per person, then I would vote to bring her here. She deserves to be a Real Hatracker (TM)!
