I know the Hatrack site says there are 5,134 "registered users" of this forum, but I have easily noticed that several of you post under more than one username (why? I don't understand).

Anyway, doesn't bother me that you choose to make multiple accounts, but I'm wondering -- how many of you really have more than one account? Who has the MOST accounts? And what do you think is the TRUE number of currently registered Hatrack forum users? (if we took away all the dupes)

Farmgirl, welcome. [Smile] Nice to meet you.

There's not a really good reason why people may use pseudonyms, except for the fact that it's funny. Often it's only funny if you understand the context of when the pseudonym was initiated, and the repetition of it may be funny as private cross-referencing back to the former humor, or just because it's out of place, or irony, or what have you.

Basically, Hatrack is a complicated self-referential system of feedback loops and nodes (users) with loopy senses of humor.

For example: suppose I were to suggest that Pat looked like Hugh Jackman in a recent photo posted on foobonic (another site which happens to be run by a Hatracker -- aka a "Jatrequero," which is a made-up translation in Spanish, which many of the users here speak -- and is full of pictures). Pat might sign in as "Hugh Jackman" to offer thanks for the compliment (being referred to as looking like Pat), very tongue-in-cheek. Or someone might sign in as "Hugh Jackman's Mother" in order to protest. Or "George Clooney" might sign in to ask for his own lovin'.

Then, the next time we talk about the XMen movie, you'll suddenly see George Clooney's ex-girlfriend commenting on his vanity. It would make no sense unless you'd been there for the whole thing, and even then, it's kind of a tossup. [Big Grin]

(watch -- here comes George's ex-girlfriend, somone will do it. Then you'll be part of another self-referential loop, Farmgirl.)

Oh, and then there's the whole "post under another name because you're avoiding the landmark post" sort of thing. It's another tradition.

I only post as me, with the exception of one post (years ago) as an incarnation of the Dead Horse to tweak Tom (sorry, Tom [Blushing] ), and once recently as CutpurseTinselpants for the talk like a pirate thread.

Posted by ana kata (Member # 5666) on :

Other times it might be because of a post count or member number thing. When suddenly member numbers became visible, and people went and looked up all the low ones, I jumped from "aka" to "ak" to get back an old lower member number, just for the fun of it.

Because of the landmark post tradition, people may sometimes swap names so they can keep on posting prior to writing their landmark post, sort of like unhooking the odometer in a car so it won't pass 100k before you sell it. <laughs>

And sometimes it's just for the heck of it. [Smile]

Thanks for the info.

So -- because I was a real dork when I originally signed in and didn't know the "character" of the board -- if I want to create myself as a new username (because I don't like this one) -- if I do that and use it long enough, will the member "farmgirl" eventually go away for inactivity?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

The account will never expire, no. The posts you've made as Farmgirl will probably eventually disappear from the board though (threads that haven't been posted to in 6 months or more are deleted, at least on this side of the river).

Out of curiosity, what did you perceive the board's character to be when you first signed up?

Truth be told, I would venture that everyone who's been here a while has at least one handle that they dont let anybody know about. So that hey can post wihtout the normal stigma of what people expect from them interfering with what thye actually post.
For instance, if that Lautsprecher für die Toten guy starts a thread on a topic and i want to post on it without his opinion of me as a "smug self satisfied idiot" coming into play, I have a nick that no one knows is me that I'd use.

Also, there was a brief period a while back when new usernames could not be registered, because of a bad bad man who posted bad bad things, and a few users who were already registered with multiple names gave second and third names away to people who wanted to join our community. So in that case, some people having a couple names was a beneficial thing, which helped keep hatrack thriving.
[Smile]

I also have a fuzzy friendly alter ego that everyone does know about.

odouls, I really don't, unless you count that single Ghost_of_Dead_Horse post way long ago. I felt awful about it -- so bad that I could never do it again, and so bad that I ended up confessing and apologizing in email to OSC. (He got involved in the discussion by defending that remark I made, sort of.) It was humiliating.

Y'all know exactly when I'm being a jerk. [Wink]

But I never officially apologized to Tom, because it was too shameful. Now that I know him better, I can work out my penance by pulling weeds or something. I hope. [Hail]

Well, I had an account I started up years ago. His member number is in the low 1000s, and besides one post to see what his member number was when the new board came up he hasn't posted in many years. I think everyone is aware of any new logins I create since I sign them all the same. [Big Grin] If I can remember, I've posted under "Hobbes", "Hobbes [Smile] ", and "Willy Shmily Tiger" (and then this other guy who I've already told you about). Also, I have registered many of the smilies, though at this point I can't remember which ones. I post those with my signature as well.

I don't remember why I created "Hobbes [Smile] " but I created "Willy Shmily Tiger" to avoid my landmark, but I've been using him a little since, because I love the name. [Big Grin]

It was snarky in an underhanded way. I don't remember the exact wording, but it was something posted to one of those ever-revolving threads (I think about religion) where the topic gets beaten into the ground, many many times, over many years, and Tom was participating again. It wasn't that he was uninteresting or saying something unfounded -- just that he'd been commenting a fair amount on other threads (homosexuality and Boy Scouts? there was more than one) that this particular topic had been done to death, and we should move on.

I found this hypocritical, I was in a foul mood for other reasons, and I was craven, so I posted some comment about how Tom was sure one to talk. Then some people jumped on me for whacking on Tom, OSC stepped in to say that no, he didn't think it was mean-spirited but rather funny, and then the contrary posts got deleted by owners.

I apologized profusely (but not as CT), then fessed up to OSC by mail, and Tom was, of course, his usual gracious impenetrable self about it all.

Whew. I've been carrying that around for years. [Embarrassed]

That brings up another reason for registering different names. Some people (one person, I think) for rudeness reasons have taken the names that are clones of real posters' names, pretended to be that person, and stirred up much strife thereby. Other people might do it or might have done it for a joke, and not in any malicious way but just to tease someone. So it's a good idea if your name contains either a capital I (as in ice) or a lowercase l (as in love), to go ahead and register the other one (or all permutations thereof) to prevent this happening.

Identity confusion is a source of fun and games, but also if used badly or if unintended can be unpleasant. I might register a name just because it's me, to prevent anyone else getting it. Draetakenna, for example. [Smile]

Also I have Elbereth Gilthoniel in case we ever need a vala around the place. [Smile]

I think that's all I have. Five. [Smile] Oh wait, I registered akak long ago for a joke post, but I gave it away to someone during the days of dearth, and they no longer post. Or maybe they chose a name they liked better once registration was reopened. akak, if you still hang around I wouldn't mind getting my name back if you no longer need it. [Smile]

So who has the most registered names? Good question. Pat is probably still in the lead.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Alternate nicks I have known:

I started out posting under my actual name, but didn't quite feel comfortable about it, so I switched to Noemon.

I created the original God account, and posted something funny. I made it a public account, with a password of YHVH, but it never caught on. I don't think anyone else ever posted with it. When the moderators eventually deleted all of the God themed usernames, this one was deleted.

I also created one called Sharpie of the Pen People, for a one time joke. It was up for the taking during the dark days when new users weren't able to register, but shortly after I remembered that it existed and offered it up, registration was reopened.

And that's it.

I went me on a mission to register every possible clone of PSI Teleport. Five or so into it I gave up. Does it matter if you have registered all the clones? Can't someone just make the name whatever they want to and then make the publicly displayed name be a clone instead? There's a million ways to do it.

PSI Teleport should only have 4 variants, right? Is there another ambiguity besides the capital i/lowercase l ambiguity?

Has anyone ever thought about the fact that if a person's name on hatrack had an "l" in it (that's "l" as in lion), you could just make it an "I" and then post under what would look like their name? The I and l appear the same when you're getting your sn. But then there would be the whole problem of the differing e-mail addresses and the member numbers.

I don't have any secret ones, though I have some that are so obscure you might not know it's me. But I wouldn't, for instance, attempt to truly hide behind one of them, because there are enough people around who know that it's me. I also have plenty I don't remember. At the moment, I can recall seven different names I have used. Not a lot by some people's standards around here. [Razz] Most have only been for one particular silly joke, though I do have a couple I pull out fairly frequently. The fact that you log in and out now makes posting under multiple names a lot less appealing to me, because it takes twice as long to post. When you reentered your name and password each time, it was much easier to fool around this way.

I don't know how Sarcasm, Cynicism, and Trogdor keep it up!

EDIT because I really should know better! [Embarrassed]

It's not an easy job, but somebody's gotta do it.

You know, this thread is someday going to get bumped, and I'm not going to have a post in it. And then someone like Icarus is going to think I haven't been here for very long, and I just can't take that kind of undermining to my authority.

So, Ralphie posted here. She has a couple of nicks, all of them equally as sassy as the one before.

Except Rita. Rita couldn't get sassier on the sassyingest day of her life if she had an electrified sassing machine.

And even if Rita could get sassier, the mere mortals of Hatrack wouldn't be able to handle it.

I have to say, I really miss "thisissarcasm" [Wink] [Razz]

I suspect she may have forgotten her password. [Razz]

Sadly, I do have 2 names. Although, the other one only has one post to its name.

I've gotten to really like this hand-me-down name. I can't imagine posting as anyone else.

Wait, what did I do? And also, what do I get?

Thanks Farmgirl!

T, you get my thanks and admiration. If that's not enough, I promise to stop using the [Kiss] on you. Happy?

I use this name only very infrequently, because it confuses so many people.

That's a good one, Papa. This is my one and only login name.
