My First_Year Seminar is "Reading the New York Times" and as one of our assignments we were to send a letter to the editor of the times on an article in the paper. I sent mine on Wednesday, and It'll be published on Monday!!!

Look for it in the Letters to the Editor section on Monday the 22nd! It's on an article that was run about Video Game mods featuring September 11th. I'm so excited!!!

Good job, Ryuko. Congrats! [Smile]

Go you [Smile] .

I had a letter to the editor in the Los Angeles Times this past December (it was in both the print and internet editions). It's a cool thing - they get lots of submissions (probably not as many as the NY Times, but still a lot). It isn't all that easy to have a letter accepted in either paper. I don't know about the print edition of the NY paper, but the L.A. paper only prints maybe ten or fifteen letters a day.

You done good. [The Wave]

Yeah for Abby!

Once they published a letter of mine in the MSU Exponent... that's about as cool as I've gotten. [Smile]

Do I actually have to track down a copy of the Times in order to read it? Or can you just email it to me and I can take your word that it's in the paper?

::bows::

You have done well, honorable disciple-san.

BTW, Ryuko, if I'm checking for it... What's your name?

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

Abby. I doubt that there'll be more than one Abby writing on online game mods in the same edition of The Times. So if you want to know my last name, you'll have to get the paper. [Razz]

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Hehe. I was going to, but I'm not THAT desperate to know your last name! Just wanted to make sure I had the right person when I checked the paper!

Hehehe. I doubt anyone will be able to spell/say it anyway. It's one o' them freakish Norwegian names.

WoW!
That's terrific!
Could I read it on the Internet?

You can read the Letters to the Editor online, but you need to register. I'll post a link once it goes up..

You're a published writer!

I had a letter published a few weeks ago in the LA Times on file sharing.

It's not on their site (except as a $2.50 download), but I may have saved a deep link...

It's up! It's up!! HERE IT IS!!!

YAYYYY!!!

And.... for those too lazy to register....

quote:
Many of the creators of game mods (modifications) like at one about 9/11 do it merely for the recognition, not for any inherent art. The idea of tragedy-based games or mods being created when the pain is still fresh makes me wonder about the state of our union and the increasing lack of respect among my peers.

The best response to such audacity is to ignore it. When the creators of these mods say something like "it's just a game," one must wonder who's the player and who's being played.

Well done my friend. Hope this is the beginning of many more publishings to come. [Hat]

Awesome!! That's exciting! [Smile]

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Did you include that "I'm too cool for words" on that? Because it fits, you do know that.

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

Well.... Whether I'm cool or not, the last line about 'being played'.... Definitely dorky.

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

That's great! And having just read the article that you were responding to... [Eek!]
I can't believe would even think that was a good idea/tasteful/appropriate/funny etc etc.

Good letter [Big Grin]

It isn't actually signed like that. Beren added that for, what I'm assuming is, comedic effect. [Wink]

Just trying to make it clear that Ryuko's head ins't swelled nearly as much as that. [Smile]

Excellent job, though Abby. So, do you get an A?

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

^_^ Yeah, in the writing portion of the class. Unfortunately, one letter isn't enough to pull an A in the whole class... Not that I'm complaining!! [Big Grin]

Edit: Also, even if I had added "too cool for words" I doubt they'd've published it. [Razz]

Great letter. I actually liked the line about players and being played. It's a good, catchy ending. And sometimes a clever exit is a good thing. It certainly was here.

So wait -- you're opposed to mods based on current events? I would've expected the exact opposite opinion to come from an Internet forum. Naturally I prefer the interpretation that offensiveness is in the eye of the beholder, so if there's a problem it should be addressed there.

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

I am. It's completely heartless to base a video game so completely on such a recent tragedy, to me. And rude. Don't forget rude. They just want publicity, and that's reprehensible to me. I even chafe at the idea of making a Vietnam sim game...
