From The Onion:

Idaville Detective 'Encyclopedia Brown' Found Dead in Library Dumpster

He had a good run, but met a sad fate. In retrospect, it is probably surprising he survived this long.

quote:
IDAVILLE, FL—Police are currently investigating the death of police detective Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown, 49, whose body was discovered in a Dumpster behind the Idaville Public Library Monday.

"Detective Brown's death is a great loss," said Idaville Police Commissioner Rupert "Bugs" Meany, a longtime critic of Brown's unorthodox investigative technique who nevertheless appeared to be shaken by the murder. "Thanks to him, Idaville has the highest arrest-to-conviction-due-to-obscure-trivia rate in the nation. I believe I speak for everyone in Idaville when I say that Encyclopedia Brown was truly the greatest sleuth in sneakers."

Even with Brown out of the picture, there's hope the perpetrator might still be caught. The killer left clues and might have slipped up. [Wink]

Thanks for this link. Man, I loved those books when I was a kid, and I'm glad to have some closure.

*sniff* and he was so young! (In other words, 2 years older than me. [Wink] )

He was an inspiration to all of us compulsive, tireless collectors of random trivia - telling our critics you never can know when a seemingly trivial fact will turn out to be useful! Which kind of makes some of us the informational equivalent of pack rats. [Smile]

(edited to correct statement on relative ages of myself and the late Mr. Brown.)
