Just because I was thinking about this on the other thread, I wanna pose the question to you guys...

What does it mean to be a Jatraquero? Is it just someone who posts on this forum or goes in the chatroom? Or does imply anything else?

It means we understand your need to ask these types of questions. [Wink]

Is it really worth taking our time to ask or answer these sorts of questions? Shouldn't we be wasting our time answering fluff?

I disagree! No, wait, I agree! Your opinion is stupid! I'm right and you're going to hell!

I am offended by your use of the phrase "WTF," Morbo. We all know what it means, and I end up saying the "f-bomb," if you will, in my head when I see that written. I'm going to report you. There is no place for this here.

Posted by Tresopax (Member # 1063) on :

Hey don't let em get you down Morbo. They're just newbies after all... [Razz]

...more to the point though, nobody's seriously answered my question!

It mean while sometimes we fluff for fun, we also attempt to have serious discusions and mostly respect out fellow hatrackers

It means we are a family of a sort.
We are uncle Orsons Family.
I hope he remembers us in his will.
At least he remmemmbers us enough to write spectacular novels for us. So I guess being left out of the will is ok.

mackillian, that is really inappropriate. You really shouldn't use language like that. You'll go to hell if you do.

Tres, we'll answer your question when the nimwits go to bed for the night. [Wink] It's a good question, one of those that we can't help but try to answer...in fact, that's one of the characteristics of a Jatraquero!! So I answered your question after all! [Big Grin]

sorry for derailing your thread, Tres.

I think it's a whole lot more than just someone who hangs around and posts. I think there are qualities that jatraqueros tend to have in common. Hmmmm, what are they, though?

They all seem to read a lot. They're usually intelligent. Some of them extremely so. In addition to reading OSC, they almost all seem to have read Dune and Tolkien and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and to like Monty Python. Are there any other books or movies or shows on that list?

Plenty of people who fit that list don't become hatrackers, though. Slash said jatraqueros have to love to argue. <laughs> I'm not sure about that but I do think there has to be a sort of joy of discussing things, maybe, and thinking about things, and deciding what you think about things. Socrates would have been a jatraquero, I think, if he could have read and typed and had the internet. [Smile]

But there's another quality that jatraqueros tend to have that I think is even more important. They have a lot of heart. They care about things, and about people and life. They want to change the world.

So that's my definition of a jatraquero. Brilliant, well-read, articulate, passionate, worldsaver with a huge heart. I rather like people like that. [Smile] I like jatraqueros.

I've been here a relatively short time, compared to some, but there's a feelings of comraderie and support here that is very appealing. Its also a little daunting when you are a newbie, but people have to learn to trust you and that takes time. What is frustrating is when other "fake" newbies make it harder on legitimate newbies to be taken seriously. At the time I joined there were a few hardheaded trolls making problems on the board, so I felt a little left out when I didn't get many responses to my posts. Suspicion is not a good way to attempt to make friends. Anyway, I didn't give up, read many posts to familiarize myself with forum decorum, and posted when I have felt the need.
OSC's works have been positive influences on my life and I enjoy being able to have discussions with others of like minds.

Julie- HA! HA! HA! I didn't realize my unintentional rhyme until I reread the post. Perhaps my mood is equally silly today. [Big Grin]

I think Ana Kata pretty much covered it. [Smile]

That and I hate to derail so this'll just be for a moment or so... Hey everyone! Great to see you all again! [Smile] Newbies that I've missed during my "beginning of the school year" hiatus: Welcome and enjoy the stay!

Wow, ak. I think that's a great definition of a jatraquero.

One of the things I've always loved about this community is how much people care about someone who may be little more than a username to them. Jatraqueros care about each other. That's such a rare and amazing thing for people who may never meet in person.

Sorry to break with the group, but in answer to this question:

quote:
What does it mean to be a Jatraquero?
I'd have to respond, 'Not a whole lot.'

Hatrack's a good place to hang out-- and anyone who does so long enough is a jatraquero. We've got too much diversity for a group name to mean anything more substantial.

Thanks for this thread you guys. I was also wondering what a "jatraquero" was, and I was too stupid to ask.

ana kata - am I a jatraquero if I read a lot, but I'm not intelligent? [Wink]

Posted by ana kata (Member # 5666) on :

I think you're a jatraquera if you think of yourself as one. Then the definition of jatraquera becomes "someone who is like you". [Smile]
