Hi, people. Sorry for the offtopic post but, since I'm new here, I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Eduardo. I'm Brazilian, 27 and live in Rio de Janeiro. I'm a huge fan of Orson Scott Card's books, but I discovered the forum only some days ago.

I hope we can engage in many interesting discussions about Card's works and...well...everithing else, hehehe.

Sorry for the gross mispelling and grammar errors. English as a second language, you know...

Welcome to Hatrack! There is nothing inappropriate about introduction threads, and your spelling and grammar both fell well within the norms for Hatrack, so I wouldn't worry about it at all. Hope you enjoy the forum!

Hey, I was readin that stuff about "You know you read too much Card when..."

One of the entries were: "when you actually cook a 'feijoada'."

My mother cooks a rather delicious feijoada, but she never readed OSC, hehehe ;-)

I guess that is because feijoada is one of the highlights of brazilian cuisine. :-)

I think of my second language (such as it is) as that kind of modern art where you throw paint at the walls in nearly random fashion, particularly as regards word order. It's kind of sad to think this gleeful free-for-all feeling will go away as I learn to actually speak correctly.

That said, don't worry TOO much about grammar problems. I mean, the execution process for mistakes is really nearly painless, and we send a lovely card to your family afterwards.

Fiqueis longe da Ralphie (sim, mesmo com o nome "Ralphie" ela é mulher) pois ela é bem perigosa.

Nunca disputeis qualquer coisa dito pelos reptéis de Hatrack. Somos mais sábios do que jamais entenderéis.

Nunca, mas jamais mesmo pensais em discutir qualquer coisa que tenha a haver com homosexualidade, quem vai fazer o parte de "Ender" no filme que está para sair, ou quantos nomes differentes o máldito Pat usa. Estas coisa só dão encrenca.

Não se preocupeis com os ciumes das pessoas aquí quando a gente fala Portugûes- os pobre coitados não entendem o que é falar (ou escrever) uma língua suave e melíflua e assim é de se esperar que eles tentam inventar qualquer coisa para se desculparem de sua ignôrancia.

Sejais bomzinho e vê se não façais quaisquer anéis de poder malévolo por aquí, tá?

Second, third, fourth ... languages are fun, you can make up words, what words, entire phrases for yourself and it won't bother you. I reckon, that without rare exceptions nobody speaks my language around here

I had a student from the Czech Republic once. She was a semi-pro tennis player who looked almost exactly like Brad Pitt would have if he'd been a woman.

Do you read OSC in English, or in your native language?

Read 2 books so far - Ender's game (loved it, love it and will love it) and Hart's Hope (very interesting, never read anything like that before) Both in English - I gather, why read translations when you can read the originals.

Both books were recommended by friend Must say, was reluctant to read Ender's game first - never like Sci-fi, but glad I did, was SO WORTH IT. Can't wait to lay my hand on OSC's other work.

Crap. Babelfish doesn't translate czech; so while I can see that you translated my post I can't puzzle out what you said- at least the number 50 is highly suspect since it didn't ever appear in my post. Is czech written in cyrillic? I see a bunch of words which look like cyrillic words translated into english letters.

Though, number 50 - that sentence wasn't translation anymore - rather additional info for me

No, czech is writen in latin - as well as slovak and polish. It's just so different from english. But beautiful

Jacare, I speak pretty basic Czech (can communicate meaning but vocabulary is flawed and have funny accent), and no Portuguese (though the Spanish residing in the farthest recesses of my memory got me the gist of what you said), so my translation had emphasis on "loose" and "idiosyncratic" - I took your topics and said what I wanted. I said, in sexy-accented Czech (which isn't even Tzadik's native language, of course, since he's from Slovakia *points above* though he speaks it also):

"And now about important things:

"Watch out for Ralphie. If she likes you, it's all good, but if she doesn't like you, there'll be pain [at least I'm pretty sure bolest is pain...] and death everywhere. Or something like that.

"There are a lot of things we've discussed many times, endlessly, like homosexuality and "Who will play Ender?" - and no one wants to talk about it more! So if you want to talk about it, people will complain, ok?

"Pat and Jon Boy have like 50 names. Sometimes we know which is Pat and which is Jon Boy, but they're all so similar it's not really important.

"I don't think anyone here speaks Czech or Slovak, but we do have a Polish girl, Kama. So I guess Kama might understand me; sorry for all the mistakes."

That was pretty much it. I didn't put the diacritic marks on anyway; I'm too lazy to switch my keyboard over and remember where all the different keys are. And no, Czech and Slovak are both Slavic languages that use the Latin alphabet, with the aid of a few diacritic marks.

Don't worry about the jealousy of some of the non-portuguese speakers here. The poor things don't know what it is to speak or write in a smooth and mellifluous tongue, so one should expect a certain amount of excuses.

Be good and take care not to go about making any evil rings of power, OK?

I'll just chime in and say "Welcome" to Eduardo and Tzadik too!

Tzadik, does that word mean something different in Czech than it does in Hebrew? Or is it simply a name? I get a real kick out of it, anyway.

And anyone who wants electronic help with spelling should check out ieSpell. I love it. Easy to download, add-on for Internet Explorer, and really easy and quick to use. Even catches most of my typos.

Gah I HATE spell checks of all kinds. The majority of them tend to "catch" my name, and then suggest that maybe I meant Manure?

But PB, this was intended as advice for absolute newbies, just the bare-bones essentials of getting around. The discernment required to distinguish the P from the B identities generally requires time to develop, and needn't be attempted at all the first few months. You know?

The first time ieSpell picks up anyone's name or sn, I simply click "Add" -- and then it will pick up when I mis-type it!

As I mentioned, I like your handle, Tzadik. Do you speak Hebrew? Or did you just happen to learn the word?

no, don't speak hebrew - i know words, phrases, learnt the alef-bejt, but that was about it - I can read the letters, but they don't form words for me I love the way hebrew sounds though!

So as far as picking up the handle - it was deliberate
