I kind of like Alan Rickman. He's not a puppy. Gabriel Byrne. Any of the villians from the Die Hard movies. Which I didn't see, so I hope it doesn't turn out the third one was Sting or something.

I also considered Rupert Everett and Keanu Reeves. If sexual preference of the actor is no concern. Given Kilmer's other roles, I'm sure Dutcher is only interested in artistic merits, though Miller as producer might have more qualms. Jeremy Northam looks more like Smith, but he's too serious.

Christian Bale already played Jesus. I think actors should try to avoid playing more than 1 religious figure in their careers.

Brandon Frasier. The only thing missing is acting ability, but he is a large and tall enough fellow.
Carrie-ann Moss would make a good Emma I think. She seems tough, but attractive.
As for playing more than one religious figure, I would say Charlton Heston already did that. He even played Brigham Young once in a recent, but not that great, television movie.

I don't think Val Kilmer would look right at all.
In my opinion, the best (of the contenders mentioned so far) would be Clin Farrill.

Colin Farrell and Christian Bale are kind of indistinguishable in my mind. I guess I haven't been out to the movies, so "C'mon, you haven't seen..." is probably wasted on me. There was a thread a while back with a wallpaper of cute guys, but I can't remember the thread.
Actually, I take it back. I did see "Reign of Fire" but due to the makeup and costuming, I still don't have any idea what Christian Bale looks like.
Maybe Colin Farrell sounds too much like Colin Firth to me. And I know who he is for sure, though he has this magnetic hold over women that most guys don't share at all so I don't know if he really has charisma.
I like Brendan Fraser a lot, though I don't quite see him in this role. That is, less so than Jeremy Northam.
Oooh, what about Hugh Jackman? He's kind of abrasive, but I've never seen him try a religious type figure.

Yeah, that is basically what I am thinking. Tom Hanks can be funny and serious and come across as a real person. I can't think of anyone I'd rather see in this role.

Yeah, plus Tom Hanks is just sooo likeable. He could pull the wings off flys and you'd still root for him. (Not that that has anything to do with Joseph Smith, just that it might help with the cross-over appeal, for those of us who aren't Mormon and would have no reason to really like the character, going in.)

Isn't he almost too old, though? How old is he? Joseph Smith died at 36, and that was a decade after formally organizing the church. Most of the exciting story takes place between ages 14 and 30 or so. Wouldn't Tom Hanks be disqualified?

Viggo Mortensen would have been perfect 10 years ago, but he's 45 now.
I'd nominate Matthew McConaughey, but he just can't tone down that accent.
What about Desmond Harrington? He's less well-known, but he has a quiet intensity that captivated me the few times I've seen him onscreen. He played Jesse Keyes in Taken and Jack Ferriman in Ghost Ship. He was also in Wrong Turn, but I didn't see that.

Desmond Harrington is too small of a guy, although that has nothing to do with his acting ability.
I would go for Hugh Jackman, but he would have to tone down some of his strong-man acting. I agree that Tom Hanks could have pulled it off in his younger years, but his age is starting to show.
Personally, I think the best look and feel of a movie about Joseph Smith would be a cross between the power of "Malcom X" and mystical anigma of "Lawrance of Arabia." I think of "Glory" whenever I imagine the art direction.

When Richard Dutcher announced the project last year, he gave Matthew McConaughey as an example of an actor we will not be seeing in this role. Actually, he named "EdTV" so if McConaughey wins an Oscar or does something else to overshadow that...achievement..., it probably won't be him.
What about Russell Crowe? Or his gladiator nemesis, Joaquim Phoenix? (no idea if I spelled that right.)
What does HRM mean other than "His Royal Majesty?"
Nicholas Cage is one of my favorites, but I think he's too wiry. I'm not sure with Orlando Bloom. Of course the guy from Dune miniseries has proven he can do this role, but if he does it will do to his career what Mary Poppins did to Julie Andrews. He would become the religious Richard Chamberlain.

Perhaps the conundrum could be solved the same way it was in Ar-Rasala, the epic film of Mohammed's call and mission. It was filmed with Mohammed as the eyes behind the camera.
Part of this was due to the extreme interpretation of idolatry in Islam, in that pictures are forbidden. You notice all their artwork is calligraphic script or geometric designs. Also, they probably had the same trouble we do, of finding an actor to measure up.
Another benefit is that as director, Richard Dutcher would find himself interpreting Smith.
