SomethingAwful.com occasionally posts a bunch of screen captures from sad, sad internet forums. Here are some.

At least the people here tend to use things like, oh I don't know, punctuation, capitalization, grammer. You know, the things that make it possible to read a post in less than an hour.

Yeah, I mean, right now I'm looking at a forum on a site called "Reality TV Rules." Granted, I am doing this for research for a professor, which makes the government give me $$ for work study.

It's really sick.

An ex-dude (now just a friend) is actually a poster on Something Aweful. Johann Public.....

If you ever go on the SA forums, then you'll be doubly glad for Hatrack.

Research on Reality TV?

Yes. I am a Journalism and Radio/tv/film student who, after five frigging years of applying, finally got work study for her busiest semester. [Big Grin]

My professor is in the RTF department. She saw I had a writing backround and hired me to research the three reality tv shows "Queer Eye," "Survivor" and "Extreme Makeover". She wanted press releases about the shows, people's responses to the shows in chat rooms and forums. These responses and releases had to be specific about body image. What she's doing is trying to put together a paper or book or something about body image in America and how the media portrays it.

The cash cow of research was "Extreme Makeover"---the premise of the show is that people's lives will become better if they look better. I am all for self-esteem, but this show goes about it the wrong way.

people's responses on the forums made me sick in general. it's like, jeez, get a life. watch something with a little more intelligence involved.

By the way, Toni, what's wrong with the SA forums? I've thought about signing up many times (I've been reading SA for over four years now).

EG, dude, that article's hilarious. Or possibly offensive, if taken too seriously.

quote:
Mormonism, which is known as "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" to insomniacs and drunks who are awake and blindly staring at the various Mormon advertisements on public television at 3:40 AM Tuesday morning, was created in 1830 by Joseph Smith Jr. Like all stable and mentally competent individuals, Smith was convinced God spoke to him and regularly visited him at the age of 15. I'm not sure if God traveled all the way to Earth just so He could speak with Smith or if it was merely just a layover on his way to Venus or the sun or something, but that's the mystery of faith I suppose. Joseph was born in Sharon, Vermont, as the third son of Joseph and Lucy Smith. His father was a self-proclaimed "treasure hunter" who I can only assume suffered from chronic unemployment because, honestly, what kind of treasure is there in Vermont? I just looked at a couple photographs supposedly of Vermont and all they showed was a bunch of fields, a tulip, and some kind of building with a dome on the top. I didn't see any giant diamonds, bags of gold, or sunken riches anywhere, and trust me, I looked at the photos for at least a good 10 seconds or less. Joseph Sr. luckily had a backup plan to provide for his family, an intriguing and exciting idea which the authorities unfortunately dubbed "counterfeiting." As a child, Joseph Jr. would stick a magic rock on his forehead so he could find "hidden treasure." I am not making this up; he called it a "peek stone" and it was supposedly powered by his magical "third eye." You know who else had a third eye? That kid from the hit 1987 horror movie "The Gate" after the devil rose up out of his basement and started flailing around like a wet noodle covered in turds. Ol' Scratch just touched the kid and bam, an eyeball grew on his hand. I don't remember exactly why that happened or what potential useful service it would supposedly give Satan, but then again the Prince of Darkness was killed by a bottle rocket in the end of that movie, so I didn't really expect too many grandiose plans from him.

EG - It's both feral and ridiculously funny.

You have a tyrannical despot at the top who arbitrarily holds the SA Goon lives in the palm of his hands and WILL wipe you out for posting something he doesn't like. It's created a predictable toadying and the dog-eat-dog mentality that generally accompanies a tyranny. Also, it's a forum based on the site concept of unmaking, and so nothing is sacred.

At the same time, you have the creations of the first generation to grow up on the internet and all of their talents. While they are disenchanted and blackened to the core, as long as they aren't directing their powers of evil at you, they're mightily funny.

Actually, as an Australian man who's alignment of good and evil is dubious (at best), I'd say you'd fit in quite perfectly over there. You'd even like it for the first six months. But when the six months are up, don't say I didn't warn you. [Smile]

I'm not sure whether that's a compliment or not... But I'll assume that former. For future reference, though, there's nothing dubious about my alignment: it's certified evil.

Okay.

edit: I have a rant. I find the constant nit-picking over grammar and spelling to be about the furthest thing possible from interesting. Every once in a while a typo and/or misplaced comma will add some measure of comedic value, but for the most part it's just so... flacid.

I can't be the only one who thinks this.

advice for robot's nitpick was funny.

In general, I don't mind the nitpicks because I love grammar and it makes the geeky corners in my soul happy. If I want to indulge that, I read them. If not, I skip them.

I make so many lazy mistakes of my own I'd never dream of picking on someone else.

Having said that, I wail every time there's a chance for Jon Boy to be funny and he's not. I know it's in there! Why no funny? It's so sad.

I've seen Jon Boy be very funny.

Hatrack is a pretty easy audience. People here want to laugh, they want to like you, they want to feel the spirit of community.

I think it's really easy to get soft.

I read something recently that talked about how physics and mathematical scientists become much less productive when they marry. By their fifties, production has gone way down for the married men, but remains at a high level for the bachelors.

Maybe something of the same is happening? The Funniness of Jon Boy was part of the courting phase?

This would explain why many wit-based comedians seem to be one ragged breath away from a sink into oblivion. Something having to do with needing a cliff dropping off in front of you to provide an edge?

You don't think it's funny when a dangling modifier says that you're an Australian man? I thought it was pretty funny. Some other people did, too.

I really don't see a constant nitpicking over grammar and spelling. I see occasional nitpicking when something is funny or so annoying that it can't go uncorrected.

Katie, I've decided that my brand of humor does not always overlap with yours. There are lots of times when I say something just to amuse myself, and you act as though my sense of humor has dried up and blown away. And what's really ironic is that somewhere on another thread, someone else might be praising me for how funny I am. You can't please all the people all the time. . . .

So if Jon Boy makes a joke and no one laughs but Jon Boy, is it still funny?

I know you're being cheeky, Kat, but I think it's Hatrack.

I dabble on a far smaller BB, where the traffic is much slower and the people are VASTLY less generous. It's a site built around parodying and comedy, and you have to FIGHT for each joke (especially if you're female). I've been funny as hell on that BB, but that's because it's pushed me to excel.

Jon Boy is funny. But as I said before, it's just really easy to get soft around here, that's all.

edit: Posted before seeing Jon Boy's post.

If it brought delight to the masses, then it was worth it. I've just been realizing that the masses are easy to delight.
