Hey! Where are you? I've been posting in the Thanksgiving thread with no response. You were waiting for me to answer a question. But WHAT question?

Are we still on for Thanksgiving at your place? Are the plans changing? What should I bring? Why are we here? Who am I? Where are my pills?

Well let's call this the new Thanksgiving thread, then.

[Smile]

If you're coming up on Wednesday, let's go ahead and do Thanksgiving on Thursday. You know, Thanksgiving Day. The only question I really had was as to which day we actually wanted to have the celebration.

Now my question becomes "who's really coming?"

So far it's Bob, Tabithecat, and maybe Mackillian if she can get a plane ticket fast enough. Is anyone else coming? Can T-Storm come on Turkey Day? Does he need a ride? Is he coming at all?

I still want to do this, definitely. I'm just at a loss for where to start with setting up the details.

What are your thoughts?

Oh God!!! That's dangerously close to a "show tune." Don't make me open up a can 'o whup ass!

Okay, I'll be there Wednesday at some point. 12 hour drive due North for me.

Anyone need a ride? From where?

I can bring cookies (my specialty) or libations (I'll purchase them), or whatever you want. There aren't any good bakeries here (or I haven't discovered them yet) so please don't ask me to bring good bread or cakes or anything along those lines. Unless your bakeries are even worse!

Mack...you'd better show up!

Shall we do a reading of Ender's Game as our activity for the day? We could act out the parts. Well, not the naked parts...but well...

um...forget it... [Blushing]

I forgot what the answer was for whether I needed a sleeping bag... Do I?

Bob, why aren't you EVER on AIM!?

Um...I'm at work and I have a 21" monitor that faces my boss' desk!

Posted by Caleb Varns (Member # 946) on :

That is a perfectly fair question.

And so is the one about the sleeping bag. [Smile]

I've got one to lend out if you need one. I'm also going to borrow some air matresses from my mom whenever I get around to seeing her again. So whoever is sleeping on the floor will certainly have a "bed" to use.

One problem I see is that we should probably prepare for the dinner on Wednesday, since I doubt it would be easy to go shopping on Thursday. What time would you be rolling in to KC, Bob? (I get off work @ 5 on Wednesday).

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

I'd want to fly in on Wednesday, boys.

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

I'll get in whenever I need to. It's about a 12 hour drive (he said again to see if maybe SOMEONE will be impressed this time! fishing here folks!). I can, for example, leave here at midnight and get there by noon. Or I could leave here at 5 am and get there at 5 pm. (Note the 12 hour difference between departure and arrival).

So, if Mack were to tell me what time her flight arrives (and what airline) I could, for example, leave TX in plenty of time to meet her at the airport. I'll be large guy holding a sign saying "Mackillian, AIM THIS!"

[Razz]

oh wait, I know... I'll just do a large sign that shows --l--

Okay, Bob...where are you driving from? I'm wondering if Tulsa would be too far out of your way to carpool...

If we can work something out, I'll come with my 2 kids. I have 2 twin air mattresses I could bring (or loan if I can't go and Bob wants to pick them up, or whatever) and I'm a terrific cook...the only thing I'm really bad at is gravy. I make the world's best key lime pie, although I realize that's not exactly "Thanksgiving" fare. [Razz]

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

Tulsa!!! Heck yeah! I'm drivin' right through Tulsa. Or I could jog over that way pretty easily. I'm coming up from East Central TX (College Station). So it's really pretty much on the way.

You want to come, I'll pick y'all up.

I won't stop if it's just for mattresses, but if you'd like to go to Caleb's you've got a ride, there and back.

[The Wave]

Sorry, Bob. I think it's because I've lived in L.A. for so long. Here, NOTHING is "20 minutes away." It's more likely to be "15-20 minutes" or "20-30 minutes," because traffic conditions are SO variable.

So I can't imagine saying "12 hour drive." I'd probably say "10 to 12" or "12 to 14" -- whichever was applicable.

Kayla, fine, your kid can't come.

[Big Grin]

Actually, I'm not much on whiney kids, but usually I can find ways to make the trip fun for them and me. Mainly, since I'm not responsible for the kids 24/7/eternity, I enjoy the chance to interact with them. Even if it would be for six hours in a car.

We make up games, usually, like who can name the make/model of a car first as it passes us. Or we guess the thoughts of the people in the car next to us. "He's thinking 'I wonder if I fed the goldfish ... to the cat!" Or, if they are old enough, we can sing songs I know.

"Jimmy Crack Corn and I don't care..."

"Hey Mr. Tally-man, tally me banana!"

"Rum ping buckety, rink tinkadoo. Ni Ni Ni! Yawhoooool."

Of course, since it's Thanksgiving, we could sing Christmas songs and pretend we're shopping at Macy's.

I dunno. Kids are fun. And if they aren't mine, I don't mind teaching them bad habits.

Boon... I promise not to teach your kids anything that will scar them permanently.

I spent A LOT of time in the back seats of cars when I was a kid. And that was long before I knew what back seats were really for! We're talking trips across country at the tender ages of 7, 10 and 15. Now I ask you, could you ask for anyone more qualified to teach children how to amuse themselves on a long drive?

We can play "guess the roadkill" or "count the buzzards." We can see who can hold a note for the longest period of time. We can speculate on the kinds of messages we'd get if aliens sent us a signal. We can do endless puns. And I DO mean endless.

It could be fun.

Or, you could sit at home wishing you were on a road trip to Uncle Caleb's house where all manner of treats and delights will be ours to sample.

I wish I could be in the car those 5 hours. I can mess with the kids' heads. Ask jexx. I totally mess with CR's head all weekend. [Big Grin]

Posted by Boon (Member # 4646) on :

I'll let you know for sure tomorrow morning, Bob.

My kids are actually very well behaved on long car rides, as long as we can stop at about the halfway point to potty/stretch. They're 5 and 6, and are a bit young for the make/model game. But they love singing, and having stories read to them. We just started The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Do you mind if I bring it, or would you rather hear something from the beginning? They don't mind. [Wink]

I have several children's music collections, including a rendition of Carribbean Amphibian sung by Jimmy Buffet and Kermit the Frog. [Big Grin] CD's or cassettes?

And, just in case somebody gets grouchy, I also have one of those LeapPad thingies and headphones!

When would we be coming back? Caleb? When are ya bootin' us out?

And...I've talked to my sister, and now she wants to come if I go...how many seats do you have, Bob? [Razz]

mack totally messed with CR's head, but I can't remember exactly how. But she did say first thing that she didn't always tell the truth. Unfortunately (fortunately?) CR lives in a world where telling lies is *not allowed* (frown at mack) so he thought mack was just joking. So he believed *everything* she said. And she told some whoppers!

He can't wait until she visits again.

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

Hey Caleb...what's the verdict? Are you set up for kids?

As for seats, my vehicle holds 4 adults comfortably with room for luggage. It has belts for five (back seat middle is only a lap belt). It should be pretty comfy in back if two are small (say in the 5 to 6 year old range).

In other words, your sister would fit as well.

At least on the way there. Now, if we all eat too much at Caleb's it might be a problem fitting in on the way back. Actually it should be pretty comfortable.

Dibs on the driver's seat!!!

Actually, we can share driving duties if y'all want to. I don't want the kids driving (you have say these things to Oklahomans...) but with 2 or 3 adults we could all drive part and not get fatigued.

As for songs & books, bring whatever the kids like. They can bring me up to date on the story if I'm lost in the middle.

"The wheels on the bus go round and round..."
(okay, that's all I know of that song.)

How far is St. Louis from KC? Which direction? Although it looks like I have a full car, maybe we can figure something out.

Caleb... do you have time to build a bigger house?

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Three and a half hours past KC, Bob. Totally out of your way. You literally would have to go through KC to get to St. Louis.

Posted by Caleb Varns (Member # 946) on :

Boon and his family are totally welcome, of course.

As to when I'm kicking you all out...

It depends?

See... I think my mother's family is going to have a dinner on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. So... if my company sticks around I'll either cancel on that or just bring Hatrack to the Reddoch Thanksgiving. Two dinners for the price of one, eh?

Seriously I have not made any decisions.

However keep in mind:

Bob
Mack
Boon
Boon's Sister
Boon Offspring One
Boon Offspring Two
T_Storm (Maybe)
Anyone Else

...are staying with me, in my one bedroom, one bathroom loft apartment. Y'all are free to stay clear to Sunday, but keep in mind that you'll have to deal with the living conditions, too. How many days can you wake up and have to crawl over three air mattresses (with sleeping bodies) just to get to the bathroom which will probably already be occupied?

How about this:

Bob & Boon and family arrive in Kansas City on Wednesday, around 4:30 p.m. Central Standard Time. We meet in a public place and then go out to KCI to pick up Mackillian. (Mack, I can arrange to have you picked up at any time, even early in the morning, so get whichever tickets are the cheapest and then we'll work around it)

At this point we have several options... my numero uno problem here is that I don't have the slightest idea where to start on making a Thanksgiving dinner. Should we labor all night Wednesday for the meal on Thursday? Do we need to go out and buy all the stuff on Wednesday? Are people bringing stuff? Are we gonna have a list of this "stuff" to get, or are we just going to wing it? And incidentally, where does the phrase "wingin' it" come from, anyway?

Some options we have... I do have a small swimming pool and hot tub/sauna (all indoor) that will be available for our use if we wish. Also for Bob's sake I'll mention that there's a tanning bed, too. I know how you Texans feel about your complexion. There are probably bunches of movies that we could see, either in my home or at the theater. We could play trivial pursuit. We could play twister. We could play truth or dare.

Eh... let's just play quarters. We'll let the kids play with grape juice or something. [Big Grin]

Anyway, it looks as if we can have the dinner itself at any time we wish. Afternoon Thursday or Evening? Which time of the day finds you the most thankful?

How about if everyone starts migrating to their own habitats on Saturday? Unless we found something really cool to do on Saturday night...

Let me put it this way. I'm watching the Chiefs go 12-0 on the 30th. This is a fact. At that point all other concerns become subbordinate. You're welcome to stay and watch the game, but you must root for the Red Swarm or find yourself in a world of hurt. [Smile]

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Caleb, sweetie, unless you are getting a fresh turkey, you need to buy that on Sunday, or Monday at the latest. (It needs to thaw and all.)

And secondly, you really need to have dinner no later than 2 or 3. After all, if you have it too late, how in the world will you have turkey sandwiches for dinner?

Posted by Architraz Warden (Member # 4285) on :

*ahem*

Perhaps you mean "Boon and 'her' family are totally welcome, of course."

Just avoiding the potential confusion upon arrival, don't mind me. Plus I had to wander in and say while that would actually be a feasible trip for me, I already have plans to venture elsewhere. A shame when that happens.

Hope y'all have a great time.

That is exactly what I meant. Boon and her children.

(What kind of girl's name is Boon? When I hear "Boon" it says to me "Daniel Boon, King of the Wild Frontier"... not "Danielle Boon, Queen of the Wild Brazier")

No offense meant to Mrs. Boon, of course.

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

That'd be Daniel Boone

Anyway, I wasn't sure what gender Boon aspires to, but it's nice to now know.

As for timing, I probably won't hang out until Saturday, but that's just because I really do need to take care of some things in my house, not because of the sleeping arrangements of our gracious host.

Two nights on the floor will probably be enough though, come to think of it. I call dibs on the spot nearest the bathroom door. You'll appreciate it when I have to get up at 4 am...

I start thanksgiving dinner prep about 4.5 hours before I plan to serve. (Just to give you an idea of a possible timeframe.)

Wow, I start about three days ahead of time. After all, you need to cut and dry the bread for the stuffing. On Wednesday, I usually peel the potatoes, make the stuffing, and bake the pies. That way, on Thursday, all I really have to do is shove the turkey in the oven, boil/mash the potatoes and make the side dishes and gravy.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

If I peeled the potatoes ahead of time I'd have to do it myself. If I wait 'til Thursday morning I can make the family do it. [Smile]

And I throw stale bread into the freezer year-round. The way I do the stuffing it doesn't have to be totally dry.

For anyone who doesn't already have a preferred method of cooking turkey, I highly reccomend brining it as described here.

It cooks faster, it tastes great, and the gravy from the drippings turns out perfectly without adding any extra seasoning.

First, let me say thanks Feyd, for clearing up the whole gender issue. Whew!

I thought, last night, that my husband would be home so I could talk to him and confirm plans, but he didn't get in until 3am. Since I had to work all day, and I just got home and he's not here, I still haven't talked to him. But I will tonight. He's promised to be home by 9 tonight.

If I do come, Bob will have to make room in his trunk for the partially thawed (by then) turkey I plan to bring. Everything else can be bought on Wednesday, no problem. I'll make lists for us.

If nobody else volunteers, I'll be head cook. How's that sound? [Razz]

Bob ('cause he can't decide not to go since he's giving me a ride [Big Grin] )

Daniel (my 6 year old)
Jennifer (my 5 year old)

Well, if it's really just you and Bob, y'all wanna come here?

Posted by Caleb Varns (Member # 946) on :

Let's wait and see what happens with Boon. Tabithecat is also confirmed to come, as well.

I was thinking (actually this was tabi's suggestion to me via phone) we could take Thursday night, after the meal, to go down to the Plaza and watch the lighting ceremony. That's about as Kansas City as you can get, isn't it Kayla?

Bob, wanna see the pretty lights?

Yeehaw! Are they them new-fangled electric lights???

[Big Grin]

You betcha!

Actually, I really LOVE what cities do to decorate. Count me in!

[Big Grin]
[Party]

Is mack out? Is Boon out?

Whazzup???

By the way, I need directions or at least an address and phone number.

E-mail me at bscopatz@cox-internet.com

If you miss Caleb's exit (by, oh say 250 miles) be sure to drop in and say hi at my place. [Big Grin]

dkw, if we run out of food, we may all pile in the car and head on to your place.

Just so long as you don't make us paint the rectory or something...

Caleb, I could probably deal with three of y'all if you want to come out here. I do know how to cook and I'm not bad at it. I know, we'll wait to see what happens with Boon et. al., but if it's just going to be you three, and no one (who lives at your place [Razz] ) knows how to cook and all. . . [Smile]

Y'all could still go see the lights and have a slumber party at Caleb's, though. I'd just cook food and throw it on the table for you. Let me know. (Besides, since we're doing Atkins, I wasn't really planning on doing the "traditional" Thanksgiving dinner and hubby has been grumbling about wanting pie and stuffing. If y'all come here, then I could make those things, and he could have a little bit, then I could send the leftover carbs home with you. Always scheming, I am. [Big Grin] )

Any word on Boon?

I know what you mean. If y'all are coming here, I'd like to go shopping. If y'all are cooking yourselves, I'd like to start praying for you now. [Wink]

I'm so very sorry, guys. I can't go. [Cry]

I'd blame it on hubby, but that would be too honest.

You could come here...I just can't leave. Although it sounds like you guys are making other plans.

If you guys don't want to come here, maybe Bob would like to stop by for lunch on his way through? Oh, wait...it's an extra hour, isn't it? Well...free lunch if you wanna come by anyway, Bob. [Big Grin]

So, Caleb, you and Bob and tabithecat cooking that meal on your own, or should I go shopping?

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Oh, and Boon, he has to go back to Texas, too. If pressed for time on the way down, he could always stop on the way back. [Big Grin]

True, very true. You know you want to try my famous key lime pie, dontcha Bob? [Wink]

Seriously, though, you can stop by to eat leftovers outta my 'fridge to make room for leftover Thanksgiving fare if you come before... or you could eat leftovers outta my fridge if you come by after. [Big Grin] Or, you could stop by both ways... Hey, two free meals?!? What could be better than that? [Dont Know]

And now, a helpful message from your local turkey council. [Smile] (Best watched with the sound off.)

Bob, check your e-mail.

What's going on with this thing?

I really MIGHT be able to go.

See my "I'm not dead" thread.

Well?

I was looking up bus prices, and given another bus trip I intend to be making not too long afterwards, I am not able to make it (unless someone is coming who is driving through my neighborhood).

Sorry fugu, my sister is only hosting dinner for her husbands side of the family, so my brother won't be coming out from STL. I thought he had more sense than to eat my sister's food, but was hoping that I was wrong. [Big Grin] Too bad I wasn't. [Wink]
