kat, I totally respect your right to delete threads, but that math joke was not only hilarious (to me anyway), but deleting it made the response I typed up a total waste! You robbed me of my only chance to look smart around here!

Dang!

I've got it! Turn about being fair play, you can wait till she posts here, then delete the thread!

Wait a minute, that would delete this post!

Oh, well, it's not that clever anyway. Go ahead. Chop that sucker!

If it's the math joke about the pole and the plane, I might still have it on my clipboard. *grin* I sent it to my Math Instructor friend.

A bunch of Polish scientists decided to flee their repressive government by hijacking an airliner and forcing the pilot to fly them to a western country. They drove to the airport, forced their way on board a large passenger jet, and found there was no pilot on board. Terrified, they listened as the sirens got louder. Finally, one of the scientists suggested that since he was an experimentalist, he would try to fly the aircraft.

He sat down at the controls and tried to figure them out. The sirens got louder and louder. Armed men surrounded the jet. The would be pilot's friends cried out, "Please, please take off now!!! Hurry!!!"

The experimentalist calmly replied, "Have patience. I'm just a simple pole in a complex plane."

Yup, still on my clipboard. Why was it deleted? It took a while for me to get it, but I didn't think it was offensive. *shrug*

*adds rivka's hometown to the list of villages to be scoured, right after the Shire*

LA's gonna be tough to scour.

All those lawyers!

*wonders whether Saruman plans to scour her birthplace, the place where she lived till she was 7, or the place she's lived most of her life*

Eh, scour them all -- I bet they could each use a good cleaning.

Well, your profile says you live in LA. I'll start there and work backwards, just to be safe.

Oh saxon, I'm so sorry! I can't reveal why I deleted it, but we can start the thread again. I would dearly love to read what your response was. Can you post it here?

It was deleted because math is against my religion. (20 points and my admiration to whomever can pinpoint the reference)

rivka, can I hang some pots up where you live? They need a good scouring, and I don't want to work that hard.

Unfortunately, my response disappeared with the thread, and I don't know that I really want to spend the time to re-write it. Suffice it to say that engineers often do plot poles on the complex plane.

There's lotsa pot in L.A., Dan. So I doubt anyone will know the difference.

kat, I didn't know you were a Calvinist. [Big Grin]

Dang! I knew I recognized it! And now the points have gone to rivka!

Alas!

So it's not funny? Or it is funny? I'm so confused? I need to go lie down.

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

It was funny, not because plotting a pole on the complex plane is impossible, or even difficult, but because of the play on words.

Oh, my God!

I just realized that I'm the only one in my entire company who would "get" that joke. And I work for an engineering firm!

I am a geek!

Fortunately, you already have a cabinet post to prove that, Mr. Minister of Brevity.

Posted by Saruman (Member # 2275) on :

So it was funny because of the word play?

Ohhh. Now I get it!

Oh. You're right. I don't.

Saxon,

You remember that!?

I still don't get that "cabinet" post, though; since I can be both brev and not-brev, at times.
