I adore this season. I just love sending Christmas cards and watching the cheesy Christmas specials. I love "It's a Wonderful Life." I love middle school holiday concerts and caroling on the doorsteps of people I don't even know. I love the twinkly feeling I get when I walk down Broadway when it's all lit up at night. I like wearing gloves and a scarf and I love it when I come inside with rosy cheeks from the cold. I just LOVE reading the family newsletters that we get from people we love, but only hear from once a year. I love it when school is out and I can spend my days doing what I want.

[whine]
But this year. This year, I'm exhausted. The holidays have snuck right up behind me and BAM! All of the sudden they're here. I didn't even have time to look forward to it. Now that everything's twinkly and the music is on the radio, I can't help but wish that I could just crawl in a hole and sleep for a month. Honestly, this year, I feel like I wouldn't even miss it if we just igNORED it. I don't have negative feelings, but I'm just indifferent, which to me is even worse. It should be great and I guess it will get better once my schedule slows down.

Is it because I'm getting older? I hope not. I hope that I don't feel like this about this season (and my birthday and all those other fun days in the year) for the rest of my life...or even have the feelings get progressively worse every year!! That would be awful! I'm one of those people that runs around and puts the decorations up when others are saying "Bah Humbug!"

So what is happening I wonder?

You don't have to answer that. I just appreciate that you 'listened.'

[Frown] (((((((((((Narnia))))))))))))

I have to say, I can kinda understand where you're coming from... this is the first year I have not had a birthday party, and all my friends are pressing me to, still, even though my birthday passed 4 months ago. But it just didn't seem like a priority anymore, and I'm lazy.

It made me sad.

I think it's always worse when Thanksgiving falls late in the month. We lose a week of mental prep time.

My cards are just NOT going out this year. No time.

My house lights aren't up yet. No time...

Oh well. It's a miracle the tree is up. A true miracle. I'm chalking it up to Sister Teresa so that the pope will grant her sainthood in the next ballot.

*shrugs*
I haven't had a birthday party in about four years. [Frown] I just never felt like planning it. Well, I sort of had a little one this year, but only 'cuz it was my sweet 16th, and I felt like I had to do something.

What annoys me is when people put up christmas decorations before thanksgiving. I like decorating, but I'm too lazy. I don't put my ornaments on the tree anymore because I don't want to take them off. I mean, I like 'em, but I feel like too many decorations is just clutter.

(((Cecily darling)))

I think it has something to do with the stress level you're at, dear. I've had times when I had something really fun like a trip to look forward to but I'm totally indifferent until the semester ends and I can finally relax.

I bet your day after finals will be all aglow with Christmas cheer. [Smile]

My finals get done the day before the Return of the King comes out. So, yeah, lots of cheer, but maybe not Christmas cheer.

I remember being a kid and wonder why all these old people kept saying that the holidays were always tough. I guess now I know; Christmas + responsibility = stress. Because I pretty much feel the exact same way. I'd rather just have some time off than go through all the Xmas madness.

I kinda feel the same way, Narnia.

I never really got to rest over the summer---I was so lonely I just wanted it to pass. Not to mention I had an incomplete to deal with--which I didn't---until this night, when I got one of the two papers done. I felt guilty the whole summer--I exhausted myself--by worrying and working 50 hour weeks. I got shingles I stressed myself so much. I got a great boyfriend in the middle of the summer, but after two months, he broke it off. Since how all of my relationships end, I feel like I drove him away--especially now, but that's another story.

I'm so stressed over the incomplete--the late paper for my research class, and the regular paper, the late assignments for photojournalism and the paper due, the logging and editing for my TV2 project. All three of my jobs. Keeping my family happy by doing menial chores.

I just feel really crappy, really alone. Unhappy. I've never been real thrilled about the 'christmas' season. I hate it when stores decorate and play christmas music before HALLOWEEN! I'm not a grinch, Just lazy with decorating and not a fan of wanton capitalism.

Oh--birthday party...what's that. I had one when I was 11. A surprise. I just saw the girl (well, woman, now) who threw it for me the other day. THe only one who was ever consistently nice to me.

My parents had promised me a sweet 16, but the house was being renovated still. So they promised a sweet 17.

I'm 22 and still no party. I'll hopefully be moving out in the spring. And the house is still being renovated. Most of the time--I'm lucky if my best friend of 8 years remembers my birthday. No one does. Ever. I just figure it's at a bad time of year. Funny--I remember everyone elses, and make an effort to wish a good one to them.

All right. I'll stop ranting. I apologize to all who had to suffer through that.

There, deleted.

Now I'll just go and grumble off in my corner.

[Smile] I'll be okay, don't worry about me. [Smile]

Did you ever see "Gremlins"? This may sound really weird, but my son and my nephew both died in December (by the time I was 25) so I really hate Christmas. When it comes to Christmas, my kid is going to have child-of-alcoholic syndrome because if she wants anything done, it will be on her shoulders. And she's like 7.

I'm totally stressed out and exhausted, too. I've got way too much to do for school and work right now. I'll be happy when it's all over and Christmas is here, but I'm not feeling especially Christmasy right now.

Oh no, Pooka....I'm so sorry to hear that.

I think that the christmas holiday season does begin to lose its magic as you grow older. This could be due to many reasons - increased pressures in life; feeling like you have to spend more money on more people, time just seems to speed up as you grow older and Thanksgiving, xmas, and new years all close together just seems like too much sometimes; getting more cynical and seeing xmas as a consumer holiday and not a religious one; christmas carols and decorations in October oversaturate, etc.

I do think that some of the 'magic' of christmas is restored when one has kids and you get to see the wide-eyed wonder that they have.

I just noticed, Narnia, that you like "It's A Wonderful Life."

That's my alltime favorite Christmas movie [Big Grin]

Yeah. That's totally it.

I really hope that it doesn't seem like a chore every year. It really is such a wonderful thing!! Are there any of you 'adults' that still get into Christmas and love it as much or more than you did when you were a kid? What are some of your secrets?
