When did Chretien resign?

Officially he resigned this morning and Paul Martin was sworn in a couple of hours ago. We have known about it for at least a month though. I don't recall when he announced it originally. The thing I dislike about this is that instead of having a new election, the Liberal party gets to have an internal election to choose their new leader. The general populace has no say. Not that it really matters to me as I live in Alberta and the Canadian elections are decided well before they even count votes from this far west.

Yeah Banna, this caught me unaware when I saw the headline on Salon.com this morning. I'd had no idea.

Wow, somehow I missed it. I think it is a shame he got drummed out for standing up to Bush. Bush appears more and more like a schoolyard bully.

ugh, the problem is I don't really like any of the democratic canidates either.

That's not what happened, though. He announced his retirement well before the war in Iraq. Late last year, he announced that he would retire in February of 2004. He's just leaving a little earlier, no big deal.

Not that I like Paul Martin much. Martin could have been Prime Minister three years ago if he hadn't been so overeager - Chretien was ready to retire in 2000, but then Martin held a not-so-secret secret meeting with a bunch of Liberal MPs, and so Chretien said "screw you, Paul, I'm running for another term" and promptly won by his widest margin yet. [Razz]

solo, I'm from the East Coast. Our votes don't count either. [Razz]

And you probably didn't notice it because you don't check any Canadian news sites. [Wink]

Really though, I haven't seen hide nor hair of it on American websites. Which is surprising, because Martin is much more an American man than Chretien was.

Yeah, kicks self. I didn't realize I was being provencial by reading CNN and Reuters for news but I probably am. I had no idea he announced his retirement last year. Definetely was merely a footnote in the US Press. grrrr

Ya, but at least the votes get counted before the election is decided. Thanks to the wonders of the internet I can find out who won the election before I even go to vote.

This is shameful, but I heard Jon Stewart on the Daily Show (where I get ALL my fake news *grin*) say something about Martin, the Canadian P.M.

Imagine me saying "wha?" to an empty room at eleven at night. Heh.

*is ashamed of own ignorance*

"What happened in Canada?"

It snowed. Again. Which is why those barren Territories between New York and Alaska remain unsettled by civilized men, and only the Hordes of Northern Barbarians dare roam there.

It's true. Twinky, Bob the Lawyer, and Jaiden are truly frightening barbarians.

Okay, I was lying about twinky and Bob. But Jaiden--she's scary! It's all "me hit with club" and "now me kill big bear."
