Played by Ben Affleck, Tom Bombadil completely steals the movie. The problem I have with it is the cheesy rap version of his song.

Yo, Tom Bombadil is a happnin' fellow!
His cash is green and his boots are yellow!

If that weren't bad enough, he wasn't even supposed to be in the third movie! Plus, it has been awhile since I read the books, but did he really have a magic flying donkey and a singing sword?

Yep, that's the way it really happened.
Tolkien mistranslated parts of There and Back Again and The Red Book.
Then his publisher mixed up some pages so that later events were related in an earlier section of the books.

:deletes lame gollum impersonation: But I really do hate Ben Affleck. Not to the extent of never seeing his movies, only to the extent of confusion over why he keeps getting cast as a leading man. I liked him as a morally ambiguous weasel, as in "Bounce" and "Changing Lanes".

Maybe it departs from the canon, but it was well worth the price of admission to watch that scene where the Nazgul shove his little yellow boots down his throat, while singing:

Tom, Tom Bombadil always had a smile yet
Now that at last has changed, and his face is violet!
