A meeting is going on in our conference room right now, throwing around words such as "paradigm" and "synergy"

Actually synergy was used correctly:

syn·er·gy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (snr-j)
n. pl. syn·er·gies

The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects.
Cooperative interaction among groups, especially among the acquired subsidiaries or merged parts of a corporation, that creates an enhanced combined effect.

Kill me now. Please.

Anyone else overhearing airy-fairy words?

Have any that you particularly despise (yes, I used the word "paradigm")?

Post on!

You need to play:
Buzz Word Bingo

I used to have this on my PalmPilot. It's lots of fun to suddenly shout out in the middle of a meeting, "Bingo!"

And then, of course, you have to "show your card" to get credit.

Erik, you have no idea.

Send me your email address (I lost it in the hard drive crash), and I'll email you my company's website address. You'll die.

LOL. I wish you were here Bob!

Oh yes, you MUST go look at jeniwren's company's website. It's a hoot & a holler!

It's a paradigm unto itself. It is both sychronistic, proactive, AND full of wow! factor.

Bob, I wish we still had what you saw way back when. They've cleaned it up quite a bit, so it's not nearly so choked with every buzz word in the business. But if you dig, you can still find some real gems from when you last saw it.

Short sample:

"LET'S TALK. Better yet, you talk and we'll listen. Because understanding the central business problem is where true solutions begin. And every problem is an opportunity.

SUPPLY CHAIN SOLUTIONS. The whole exceeds the sum of the parts. We're interested in the synergy of people, products, partners and support. The result is a tool that makes it easier to harvest the wisdom within an organization and use it to drive processes that changes business results.

PAIN RELIEF WHERE IT MATTERS MOST. Leveraged potential. A realistic and powerful migration path to take you safely where you have to go."

*shakes head* I can't even begin to guess how much we paid for stuff like this.

BINGO!!!

Now the meeting has split into two different meetings. BS in stereo.

Bingo indeed!

I bet I could turn out better, more meaningful BS. Now where do I go to get people to pay me for it?

I suppose I need some sort of degree first before I'm qualified to say nothing in ways that result in bad changes.

I think the word "leverage" should be taken out behind the barn and shot.

Posted by jeniwren (Member # 2002) on :

Better yet, afr, copyright it, and charge a royalty fee for each use. [Smile]

What is that quote from the Simpsons again? Something about stupid people trying to sound smart using words like proactive.

Posted by eslaine (Member # 5433) on :

It has ended at last.

The last phrase:

"Sustainable Growth"

AHHHH!

There is a comedy skit by "Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie" called "Dot Com 1999" which uses a LOT of these words. Jiminy, it's funny. You can find that song (and others) on this website.

Hee!

Just checked out jeniwren's site. It does take the cake right from the first paragraph:

quote:
...robust supply chain management solutions....
You poor soul.... [Frown]

I know some people who are consultants, and I sent one of them the link from above. He was NOT amused. I was treading on sacred territory.

So, warning: Those Who Write This Have No Sense of Humor About It.

Hmm. I don't hear many of those too often. Maybe I'll invent my own Bingo list for church meetings. It could be fun at annual conference.

I am in a position to write stuff like that. And do. And I laugh all the way home too!

When I taught GT 2nd grade, I gave each student a "personal vocabulary word" that described him or her. I refused to reveal the meaning - the students had to find that out for themselves! They loved this! I gave out 5 a week until each person had one. It was challenging to think of words that were both true and positive for each kid.

Some good words: gregarious, solicitous, studious...

Erik, I hope the link made you laugh. [Smile]

Oh, yes!

I use the verbage, but I realize what happens with trendy biz language as well.

^^^see what I mean!^^^

There's this teacher at my school who seriously talks like that 24/7. He knows absolutely nothing about anything, but the only reason he still has a job though is because he gets the school a ton of grant money... So apparently there are a bunch of suckers who actually buy into that. Go figure.

[delurk]Out of curiosity, I did a search for the terms "robust supply chain management solutions" on google. There are more than 200,000 pages with those terms. There are 8 that have that exact phrase. Definitely falls into the 'over-used' category. That or the used something similar to Dilbert.com's Mission Statement Generator to compose the sites.

A word that has appeared twice in the book I'm editing: pusilanimous. It's just a big, fancy, Latinate word meaning wussy. There's just no excuse.

Edit: It appeared a third time. And it's all in one chapter!
