Or, as is more likely the case, the lesson was learned extensively from watergate, and I predict that it will be "discovered" that these aides acted "totally on their own".

*rolls eyes*

Basic short story: a computer consultant or somesuch for the democrats screwed up (presumably unintentionally, or else this will become a much juicier story) and made the files of newly created users read-accessible to people with no privileges. Republicans started reading internal democrat communications, and passing them on the news media, and such.

This has been more than a bit underhanded, and I expect every staffer who was involved in it to be fired, at the least.
