cute, Frisco. THe link just goes to McAfee's description.

We had just sent the suspicious file to McAfee to be analyzed -- they hadn't even named it as a virus yet -- when we got majorly hit -- over 550 in the first 3 minutes....

WHAT IS THE DEAL!! [Mad]

We just hit with a NEW variant (we caught it very early -- came to our department and we quarantined it) but just got off the phone with McAfee (when sent it to them to be analyzed) and they just confirmed it is yet ANOTHER new virus -- (they haven't named it yet).

<SIGH>

This makes TWICE this week that we were on the "cutting edge" of technology -- one of the first recipients of new virus (we got Doom before they named it). I think someone is targeting us.

This REALLY sucks.

It's another zip file -- so be careful out there!

FG, I really AM baffled. Aren't you, like, in Kansas? Demographically, there's no reason for these viruses to be reaching you so early -- unless somebody's deliberately leaking them into your area.

::wonders if someone from Hatrack is targeting us [Wink] :: any die-hard Linux users out there? (CNN says it MyDoom was written by a Linux fan based on the coding, etc.)

We received a couple last night from an email address at BYU -- W32.Novarg.A@mm. Just thought I'd mention it.

Frankly, CNN's full of sh*t.

By far the most likely person to have written MyDoom is someone associated with spammers. The SCO DDOS stuff is really just a tack-on.

Viruses are quite often spam-vanguards. They expose open computers, and often co-opt them for spam purposes.

The rapid spread of this virus compared to other viruses that act on the same method of delivery (human stupidity + address books) strongly suggests to me an organized mass emailing effort is driving it, and the most likely candidates for that by far are spammers.
