...and barley.

Interesting article, but horribly written.

Great article, Noemon!

Ancient Roman mosaics depict gladiators as stocky, heavy men but historians have tended to assume this was a tribute to their macho image rather than a literal depiction of their size.
Heh. I love it when modern historians have their assumptions shattered.

But the vegetarian stereotype is shattered by the finding that gladiators did not wear sandals but fought in bare feet.
Shattered? What veggie stereotype? I have a feeling this guy was devastated when he found out spiders are not actually insects.

For those interested, ancient machinery drove cruelty at the Colosseum

Yeah, I do too. Isn't that great?

I know! This is one of the things that bugged me about the article. It's as though the author attempted to be tongue in cheek, but just came off as somewhat confusing and somewhat annoying. The information itself, though, is great.

One part of the article that I thought was really muddy was the abrupt transition to a discussion of the whole "thumbs up/thumbs down" question, literally in a paragraph about something entirely different.

Yeah aspectre, I followed that link too. Pretty fascinating stuff, eh?

Interestingly enough, only soldiers on military maneuvers were allowed to eat peas. Hence the famous saying.

Isn't anyone going to ask "What famous saying?"

What famous saying, Dobbie?

I'm glad you asked.

If you want peas you must prepare for war.

maybe the reason all those gladiators died is because they were vegitarians.

Posted by Snarky (Member # 4406) on :

Or maybe 'cause they all got SWORDED.

Did you hear about the cannibal gladiator who ate his own wife and enjoyed it?

Posted by MEC (Member # 2968) on :

..because the ones who SWORDED them ate meat.

Come on, don't make me waste a perfectly good setup.

Posted by Snarky (Member # 4406) on :

No, Dobbie, I haven't heard that one. How's it go?

he was glad-he-ate-her?
