what sort of prize?

Posted by Pat (Member # 879) on :

Yes. I want to know about this 'prize' too Trogdor!

And how does one 'play' mafia. I don't get it.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Oh, man. Pat is talking to himself again! *sigh*

Whose job is it to deal with that? Pop's? Bob's? Jon Boy's? [Confused]

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I'm betting the prize is Respect.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

I think it's called B-U-R-N-I-N-A-T-I-O-N.

I'm glad you asked, Pat. Let me illuminate you, sans burnination.

Mafia is forum-based game based on a pretty fun party game. Anywhere from 12 to 20 people are needed and are split into three teams.

Team one is the largest, consisting mainly of the TOWNSPEOPLE. These are the good guys. They try and figure out who among them are the bad guys.

The bad guys are the MAFIA. They comprise a fourth to a fifth of the total population. In the MAFIA ranks there is a leader, who we lovingly refer to as the GODFATHER. The GODFATHER has a neat little trick that we'll talk about later.

So, the game begins with a dawn of the new day. At the dawn, the townies who comprise the good guys as well as the concealed bad guys in their midst, learn of the most recent mafia hit. They then, based on the clues provided in the written kill by the moderators, must come to a conclusion of who they are going to lynch. The hope is that the townies lynch a mafia member. The mafia's quest is to sway public opinion in the townspeople's ranks in an effort to kill all the townies off before their true identities are found out.

Of course, the mafia also gets to kill townies once a day, too.

But the townies get two people to help them swing the game back into their favor. They are:

The SHERIFF: Before the townies go to sleep, the Sheriff is allowed to know if someone in the townie membership pool is in fact a member of the mafia. All mafia members then are subject to the sheriff's gaze except THE GODFATHER, who retains special special powers of deception.

THE DOCTOR: Before the Mafia chooses to kill someone, The Doctor can choose to save someone. Anyone. If the doctor chooses the same person the mafia kills, that person lives.

And remember that third team I mentioned earlier? It's a one-man show. He's called the SERIAL KILLER. The SERIAL KILLER'S quest is simple. He gets to kill one person a day, in an effort to win the game for himself, or herself.

When there are more mafia members than townspeople, then, the mafia wins. When all the mafia is dead, then the townies win. If the serial killer is the last man standing, then he/she wins.

So, there you have it. The internet's funnest game by far.

Now, I'll turn the time over to you, the Hatrack audience, for testimonials.

[Smile]

Don't look at me, Rivka. I'm not going near that psychological trainwreck.

But I AM going to sign up for mafia! Who else is going to follow my stellar example? Anyone? Anyone? Rivka?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Well, I just figured that you had experience in the whole talking-to-yourself(ves) department . . .

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

Rivka, Pat and I think you should sign up for mafia.

Please?

Could you at least sign up, create a profile, and then let the mafia kill you first?

Please?

[Frown]

*cringe*

Now they're using GUILT! That is just not FAIR!

Sorry, but still no. But now I feel guilty about saying no . . . I hope you're happy! [Razz]

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

BUT WHY?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

You want a list? [Grumble]

IOW, I should be finding ways to cut back on Hatrack, but have yet to successfully manage that. (I have cut back on some of the other online stuff I do.) Signing up for something new, OTOH . . . [No No]

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

To be honest, I'm just messing with you. It would be fun with you, but we'll be okay without you.

[Smile]

And it sounds like you've got a lot on your plate. Can I do anything to help?

hugs?

Concerning the Prize --

Any suggestions? I'm open to suggestions.

Oh, and the budget is $5 and under.

I am still baffled as to the appeal of Mafia.

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

It's because you've NEVER played.

Duh....

[Roll Eyes]

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Couldn't the "winner" be a group of over 5 people, conceivably?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Point of clarification, please.

quote:
It's because you've NEVER played.

Does that mean that Slash doesn't understand the appeal, since he has never played? Or is the appeal to others that Slash has never played?

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

Yes.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Ahhh. Thanks. [Smile]

Yes, wednesday is bump day.

Hang on to yer' britches, Pat, I'm playing.

I'm signing up, even though I am not more than a lowly n00b.

**takes pooka's offense again**

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

And Welcome, HRE. We're glad you're playing.

Have I really missed it?

I think you'll be fine so long as you post a profile before Friday. [Smile]

Now I just need to write my own profile...

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

Only a few more days to get your profiles in. Up and at em.

Posted by hansenj (Member # 4034) on :

I thought you were sending out roles tomorrow...doesn't that mean that we need to get our profiles up before then?

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

But people aren't signing up in the droves that I want them to, so roles may go out on Saturday.

Posted by hansenj (Member # 4034) on :

Oh ok then...well, I just posted my profile. [Big Grin]

Come on guys! How can you pass up an opportunity like this one? I mean, it's Little House on the Prairie! And with moderators like Pat and Hobbes...honestly! You just can't pass it up!

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

Thank you, Hansenj.

We're still missing profiles from jeniwren, Nathan, Brinestone, Zan, fugu, saxon, and several others.

Ten are signed up right now. It would be good to get twice as many, but we could probably pull it off with fifteen or sixteen.

And I've settled on prizes. I'm going to start grabbing books, cds and videos off the Deseret News's freebie table and will post a separate thread of available prizes which I will ship out to the winners. There is some good stuff there sometimes. Sometimes there isn't.
But it's free, and it's for the winners.

How bout that?

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

I signed up for it?

Posted by Trogdor the Burninator (Member # 4894) on :

No, but I thought I'd throw your name out in an attempt to get you to sign up.

[Smile]

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Do you have to have special stuff on your PC, Trog, like IM? Cause I can't make that work. I do have e-mail. And I think I'd like to be a serial killer and blow off some steam . . . (a pun, people, a pun)

Posted by cochick (Member # 6167) on :

I'd love to join in but won't be being on a completely different time zone (i.e. GMT - 5 hours ahead of Eastern) make it impossible to play along? [Frown]

Though I do tend to turn into a Nightowl at weekends - kills me for the following week - but I'm hooked on Hatrack [Smile]

It's always a pleasure to play in Pat's games.

I hope I'm a mafia member because Pat favors the mafia, except when they are winning in which case he favors the townies.

Oh, and his clues are all LIES in a pitiful attempt to convince the townies to lynch whoever is on Pat's blacklist at the moment.

So anyway, sign me up.

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

BTW Pat, have I mentioned lately that I think you're the ultimate male here at Hatrack?

Oh, and Jacare said you smelled bad, but I didn't believe it for a second.

Okay, I've never done this before, but I'll give it a go.

Please note that it took me 3 months to figure out how to work a DVD player, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Posted by peterh (Member # 5208) on :

Alright, I caved in and posted my profile. I just better not be the second person dead again... [Grumble]

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

In the Martian colony mafia, which was my only experience, it was a bad idea to jabber too much (which I was doing). I was really excited to play and was trying to interact with people a lot, but the serial killer was merciful enough to take me out right before I got lynched. :sigh: Wasn't I the only member of the mafia that was dead at the end?

So it shouldn't be really time consuming. But it may be totally different if you are not a mafia member. Though I'll be voting for whoever has said the least. Pretty much. Unless it doesn't seem to be working.

Posted by Brinestone (Member # 5755) on :

I will post a profile as soon as I get home from work today. Sorry, Pat, I've been ridiculously busy this week.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

:bump: Come on, folks, my chances of survival depend on more people signing up [Cool]

Posted by Psycho Triad (Member # 3331) on :

I'm attempting to wrangle as many people as I can over to Grenme to join up.

Under the pretense of "its not so bad! Try it. Please? For me?"

i count 15, and if the people who said they will end up actually doing it, we could very well reach 20.

Come on you procrastinators! Procrastinate something else, and go write a mafia profile!

And to answer some peoples questions:
You need nothing more than the ability to read a forum and post, and since you're at hatrack, i think you can do it.
AIM is not needed, although some people like it. There have been games where AIM has been severely discouraged, and other games where its great to have. MEANING: you don't need it!

<--- Has never had AIM, yet managed to singlehandedly route the townies in the previous game -- with help from evilcelia.

Just use GMS. You can set it up to notify you via email every time you get a message. It's all the correspondence you need.

I'll play but let me go back and figure out what it means to "post a profile".

We only need 3 more people for a game of 20!!!

Where are you all? come post your characters!

Let me just point out that there is now a sexy, eligible 17-year-old bachelorette in the town now, and she's looking for a man. [Big Grin]
