I WAS trying to figure it out from the context of the threads. I for some reason thought it was a forum-specific word, like "dobie."

1) It is an abbreviation for that, but I have a hard time believing that was a shot in the dark guess.

This is directed at me? If it is, it wasn't a shot in the dark guess. If you write Holy Roman Empire too many times your arms fall off. I got used to reading Holy Roman Empire wherever HRE is.
