I'm seeing so many newbies everyday these last couple of weeks.

Get in here and state your name and why you're here, before I get too confused. I don't want to be saying hi to oldbies in disguise.

And Welcome to Hatrack! [Wave]

PSI how do you define newbie? Am I still a newbie? I've been here since December of last year.

You did enough to express your disapproval.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

People who have joined during this influx...like in the last week or two.

(The definition of newbie is more complicated than that...I'm using it for my own devices here.)

And Derrell....no one with a landmard thread is a newbie for this purpose. [Razz]

Phanto of the opera? [Smile]

I guess newbies includes me.
ok, Name: Nathan Stanislawski
Now I hope you can see where the first part of my displayed name came from. Due to the fact that I am really really good at my workplace as one of the training petty officers, they often add the last part. That and it rhymes. Sometimes things happen by PFM (Pure F'n Magic), and I will incriminate myself no further.

yes...I am new here, one of those people who start at pweb and begin to move to hatrack...

as for my name, may as well call it Rei because that's what everybody calls me anyway...

why I'm here...*thinks*...*ponders* ...I'll get back to you on that...if ever I figure it out

I think I'm a newbie.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

OK, I guess I qualify.

I have been registered for over a year, but participated solely on the other side until a week or two ago.

I am a big fan both of OSC's novels as well as his reviews and political commentaries, which is pretty much why I got involved at all.

My wife (screen name beverly) and I enjoy discussing OSC's articles. After the one on gay marriage, somebody on the other side pointed out the bruhaha that it caused over here. I wasn't that interested in what was going on here -- I've never really been much a part of an online community before. I've tried, but always got fed up and left.

My wife was interested, so I pointed her towards that thread. She got interested, signed up, and started posting on this side. After about a week, I decided to try it out. I must say that I've really enjoyed it. One thing that I really like about here is that while I absolutely, completely disagree with on very important topics with certain people, I still respect them because they act respectful.

I work out of my home, and all of my good friends left the state when they graduated from the local university (BYU), so I haven't really had anybody to discuss politics with for a long time. It's great to hear different views besides the party lines, the media line, and NPR.

Anything else you want to know?

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

I don't know, Porteiro. It seems like you've been here a while to me. Oh well.

But then, I'll take it as a compliment that you don't think I belong on this thread.

Probably, but the first time I got an advancement in rank (to E-5) and a bonus (which I so quickly spent!). I don't care for where I am at right now, but I transfer next year so I'll deal with it.

I am sort of a newbie, I guess. I don't feel like an oldie, anyway. Except in real life.

Actually, I found an old name for myself, "E," which is One thousand something, so I guess I am , officially, not a newbie. I used to be on the writer's forum a lot. I tend to come and go depending on what I am up to with work and other life things, so I never get quite established here.

Hi, my name is Rachel. My SN is delicate flower because that's what I am. Sometimes it's true, sometimes it's a lucas non lucento (sp? don't really know Latin, that's the only phrase I've got).

I started reading OSC about a year ago (on a recommendation from my doctor, no less) and have been enjoying him ever since. I found this web site just looking for more info on what books might be coming out soon, and soon became addicted.

Posted by Shepherdess (Member # 6115) on :

Definitely a newbie here! Give me a minute while I find the post where I introduced myself on "the other side" so I can be lazy and just paste it here...

I just discovered OSC's books a few months ago, and since then his books have been almost my sole source of entertainment. I've read all of the Ender books as well as the Shadow and Homecoming series, Treasure Box, Enchantment, Sarah, Rebekah, and Maps in a Mirror. I cried my eyes out at the end of Saints. I think my favorite was Speaker for the Dead (which I read before Ender's Game). I have a bad habit of reading my favorite authors out of order, because I'll go to the library and just take whatever's available!

Its been great to discover the Hatrack community, and I've enjoyed lurking for a while even though I haven't contributed all that much yet.

I'm a newbie.

I'm actually a fairly proficient lurker. I contemplated posting my 100th post landmark yesterday, but I accidentally posted too soon. Shucks, I'll have to wait until I get to another round number. [Smile]

I'm Catherine. Call me Nelle, if you want to shorten my nick. I realize shortening the first part might lead to undesirable results.

I'm a high school teacher and I enjoy hatrack. My claim to fame is that I know Kat in real life- she introduced me to this joint. I really enjoy reading here- thank you all for posting insightful and thought-provoking threads.

Hi, I'm Belle.

Everyone: Hello, Belle!

I'm a newbie. I know, I know, it doesn't look like it.

But let's face it, I am a nothing and a nobody compared to someone with 14,000 posts, and to someone who was registered "A long time ago"

So, I'll just continue to wallow in my obscurity, and hope one day I can escape my newbie status.

Oh,and to all you people even more insignificant than I - [Wave]

Zamphyr here, long-time lurker, first month poster.

I'd been lurking for about a year and a half before I finally registered. Forum really seemed to get on a roll after the New Year, lots of intelligent posts on a wide variety of topics. As newbies here seemed to be defined as someone around less than 2 years or people with less than 500 posts, its safe to say I probably won't become an oldie. Judging by my post count in other forums, it would take me at least 3 years to hit that mark, I'm just not that active.

That said, I am glad to be here and will chime in with snarky comments or pointed, on-topic questions every now and then...and as someone asked in another thread : my flute is doing just fine. I am a master of it, you know [Wink]

Because we have so many newbies lately, I think we need to set them up on a schedule of when they can post so we can keep them all straight.

Going by the first letter of thier username, I suggest the following:

A-E midnight-1am
F-J 1-2am
K-O 2-3am
P-T 3-4am
U-Y 4-5am
Z 5am-midnight

Newbie here. I'm either logged in as DocCoyote or CoyoteGirl. I made a SN for myself the same day my man made one for us. Since I usually log in on Internet Explorer, it defaults to Doc. Oh well. It's almost always me (Lisa) posting.

Why'd I join? I'm pretty sure it was the God posts. God especially enjoys people who find irreverent humor humorous. Found the site after becoming completely addicted to Alvin, Ender, and everything else. Also, I'm too lazy to post to the actual writing forums, so chat is the next best thing.

I'd say I qualify as a newbie, considering I joined about 10 minutes ago.

I've been posting at PWEB for over a year, but I've always been too scared to wander over to this side of the tracks. I finally got up the courage, and here I am, reporting for duty. The real reason I came here is because I got an inside tip on a Discworld Mafia game.

My name is Ethan (I'm wizzard on Pweb), but you can call me Eljin or Twitch.

I guess that's it for now. Bye, everybody

...okay.

My name is Karen. I'm sixteen years old (I'll turn seventeen on 04-04-04, which, I'm pretty sure, will be the highlight of my year; I like books and chocolate) and a junior in high school.

I think the most neat thing about me recently is my language-icity. I've taken five years of Spanish (...and still speak at a third-year high school level. yuck), one year of German (I'm rather good at that, so I'll be skipping to advanced 3 next year; go me!), and one year of French (which is so-so). I've also just started Russian lessons, which is very interesting. I want to start Hebrew lessons soon (weeee!) and I hope to at least minor in linguistics in college.

I'm also a HUGE grammar person. I tend to make mistakes (of course!) when typing, and I like to slang it up, but give me something to edit and watch me in ACTION! I'm hoping for an 800 verbal on my SATs this May 1 (I got a 790 on my PSATs, so it's a matter of sleep and a certain level of calm while taking the test). So, cross your fingers!

Why am I here? ... well, I love OSC. He's been my favorite writer since I first picked up Ender's Grade, almost exactly three years ago. I immediately went into his other work, devouring it, and I managed to convert several other friends to Card through EG. In fact, I saw a boy in my science class reading the book about two weeks ago, and I had a little fit of delight (also known as a geek attack).

I like to think that OSC actually sent me into scifi -- I was/am being raised by my grandparents, and my Bummy is absolutely against violence and science fiction (to her, they are interchangable) in all forms. I picked up EG, and not long after I was all over Heinlein and Bradbury. I especially enjoy Heinlein; I'm writing a research paper on him for my English class.

Card is also the only author that I can stand to read anything about religion from. I'm a very liberal person, raised in San Fransisco by pretty free people. I'm also Catholic ('nuff said). A lot of the Christian authors write about God in a way that makes me very uncomfortable, so I stop reading, or don't even pick it up. Card can make it feel real and true, which I love.

I joined the Young Writer's Workshop, and decided to hope on over here to. I like it here best -- the people are much more interesting and nifty! The YWW seems to be an area constructed entirely so that they can bash fanfiction. I'm big into ff (television nerd; [Roll Eyes] ), so I'm a bit like, "Hey! I have original ideas! I write them down, darn it! [insert lots of other pro-ff arguments]"

And, as you can see, I like to talk about myself. A lot.

--Karen

I'm a newbie. Sorta.

I tried the forum way back in the late 90's after reading about it in the old Hatrack River Newsletter (paper [Angst] ), but I got flamed for every post I wrote, so I said forget it. And it was too confusing and forums were too new.

I hardly ever post because I don't have time to read all of this stuff. Ok, I do other things. But there are some cool things here, so I stick around.

I'm not to be confused with "Human", who is a piggy and a forum vet. I'm "human_2.0", which means I'm the next version of a program/variable/function that is titled "human". Note the underscore, which is used to eliminate the white space because white space is used as a delimiter. So my name should not be interpreted as 2 seperate names, "human" or "2.0", but just "human_2.0". If that is too much to type, then I prefer h20 ("zero", not "oh", so that I am not confused with water).

Or just h2, which is how a *real* programmer would name the program/variable/function that I am suppose to be.

My most unique ability is being verbose for no reason, which I demonstrated in this post very well.

[Big Grin] I'm glad to be welcome!

Yeah, when I first typed "way back in the..." I put "mid 90's", which is more "way back". But then I remembered the internet didn't get big until 95, and I know it was at least 2 years after that that I found hatrack.com. So I guess late 90's isn't so way back... Just seems like it.

Yes, late 90s now qualifies as "way back". We youngsters just have to come to grip with the fact that the decade we grew up in is 4 years gone, and we're on our way towards getting old.

Hi Everyone, I'm came here cause I enjoy OSC. I got hooked cause Bob Scopatz had a pun smackdown thread going and I can see the folks on here have a very real sense of community.

I'm a 42 year old married male. I live in the midwest. I'm a self-employed house painter that enjoys, reading fiction, playing with Linux, evaluating and brewing homebrew, and making bad puns.

Punwit you're a real person? I always thought you were Bob's altered ego.

Your puns put me to shame but I'm glad to have ya. [Smile]

I'm new. I'm from Ontario, and ummm... *looks shiftily around* I've never read anything by OSC except his posts here. But no! Don't panic! Ender's Game has been added to the top of my list for this summer. There's too many intelligent people here who worship his writing for it not to be amazing. [Smile]

So how did I find this place, you ask? I'm here because Bob the Lawyer would always use my computer to check Hatrack at some point every time he came to my house to visit, and I eventually got curious, and decided it looked like fun.

I guess I qualify as a newbie. Well, I live in Sweden, 17 years old and a student. I have read as many books by OSC that I can get my hands on over here, but unfortunately that isn't very many [Grumble] I also have a twin brorther on this forum, but I won't tell you who [Big Grin]

I posted the following in the other forum about a week ago:
quote:

Hello,

I just registered here, although I've been visiting Hatrack for several years now, mainly to find out what new books are out and such. I think the primary reason that I became interested in registering here now is seeing how frequently OSC posts and is a regular member here, which I think is really cool.

Regarding myself, I'm 20 years old, have been married for a bit over a year, and work as a software developer for an AI based company. My wife and I spend a lot of our time working through our church with predominantly African American urban children from broken homes and families from our neighborhood in the city of Pittsburgh. She co-leads an after school program for elementary school students and I run the junior high youth group.

I've long been a fan of OSC's books, and since being married, one of our favorite pasttimes has been reading aloud books to each other, so I've hooked my wife onto OSC as well. Shadow of the Giant was the most recent book we read, of course.

Avin

Well, I'm a newbie, in that I signed on only in the last two weeks.

I've been an avid reader of Civ Watch/World Watch since OSC started writing them, and also have read Uncle Orson's reviews since back when he only reviewed "almost everything" [Wink] And, of course, I got introduced to OSC over 10 years ago, when I found "Ender's Game" in my 7th-grade social studies/language arts teacher's classroom library. I've been hooked since, reading anything and everything I can find with Mr. Card's name on it.

Strange, then, that I didn't even know these forums existed until I did a google search to find out more, if I could, about the upcoming E.G. movie. How incredible! Mr. Card communicates with his fans, plays games with them, enters into deep (and not so deep) discussions about his novels and about life, politics, religion, and the universe.

Besides, any opportunity to see more examples of this man's wit and intelligence is one that I will gladly take, particularly when I also have the good fortune to witness the wit and intelligence of all of you other fans of Mr. Card's work.

A little about me: I'm finishing up my last year of college work prior to becoming a band director. My nickname there originates from my high school years, when I was the student conductor for the local marching band. One of my classmates dubbed me "Mr. Zander the Band Commander" and the name stuck, but then morphed once I got to college into "Bando Commando."

Here's a big "thank you" to the Hatrack River community, for being so welcoming, so kind, so witty, and so intelligent. I've never seen an online community be so darn nice, and it is quite refreshing.

I'm new as well.
Names Evan, just started reading forums and getting into the whole message board thing and I stumbled onto hatrack while looking at the cool new dragon army clothing stuff.
Read OSC since I was little starting with Ender's Game. I'm a poly sci foreign relations major at the U of Minnesota and just reading and re-reading all of the shadow series and then looking at whats taking place has creeped me out a little as to how right he has been on a lot more of whats going on then I could have been ten years ago, so I've been very impressed with all of the foreign relations/earth war stuff OSC has been writing lately.
Thats about it for me!
