I went to the doctors on Monday because my bottom left wisdom tooth was swollen, very sore, and tasted funny (infection).

I was put onto Tylonal 3's and Amoxicillin (500mg, 3 times a day for 10 days).

I've gone through 9 pills now (the appointment was Monday morning) and I'm still suffering a lot. On two Tylonal 3's it still kills to eat oatmeal. It hurts to talk, it hurts to swallow, and I'm having problems getting to sleep.

Should my mouth still be hurting like this?
The swelling hasn't gone down at all.

Should I be taking time off of work tomorrow to go back to the doctors?
(I have a student job at school, I'd rather not- I don't get paid if I'm not there and working).

If it doesn't feel better in the morning go back. Demand they do something! They don't like to work on infected teeth, but sometimes it the only way to alleviate your pain.

I hope it gets better. I hate dentists and the nasty things they do to your mouth.

Oh Jaiden! *ouch*
(((Jaids)))

I know how much it sucks to take off work, especially when you need the money, but I would efinitely go back in. But maybe when CT shows up she will have some good news for you.

[Smile] Thank you everybody [Smile]

I've felt no relief at all so far. The infection tastes worse, it is as swollen if not more so, and is causing easily as much pain as it was before. And I know enough not to stop taking the antibiotic. so no worries about that!

I guess I'll call my doctors tomorrow and see what they say toward the Tylonal 3's and pain. This hurts much worse then getting out those silly top wisdom teeth did!

And I'd really like to eat again!

Jaiden, you can try 600mg of iburofen on top of the tylenol 3s, so long as you don't have any ulcers or known bleeding problems. Benedryl (an over-the-counter antihistamine) will likely help make you sleepy. 12.5mg or 25mg would be fine.

I think you really should make that phone call. Pain needs to be controlled, and you may just need more meds to get through it. Meanwhile, there are some old-fashioned remedies for dealing with tooth pain. Of the one I know, I would not recommend putting an aspirin tablet at the tooth site itself, as I've seen ulcers develop on mucus membranes after prolonged contact with aspirin.

However, you could try clove oil (available in many pharmacies and supermarkets), as I've seen dentists recommend this. It looks like whole cloves are a possible substitute, but clove oil is more effective. You could also try anbesol or orajel (over-the-counter anesthetics for mouth sores, as in teething), but I doubt they'd be very effective for long. Your pain is likely internal irritation of the nerve root, and that really needs either an injected nerve block or systemic pain meds.

Good luck! Tell us how it works out. I have my fingers crossed for you.

[Edit: just saw Speed's note. [Smile] ]
