Raia and I and maybe another friend or two might be going on a roadtrip to Mexico this summer!

*jumps up and down excitedly*

Anyone know a really cool city or place in Mexico that should be our final destination? Preferably a place not extremely deep in Mexico.

*jumps up and down, with jaw still open*

What places in Mexico are best to visit?

My brother and sis-in-law went to Tijuana on their wedding trip and they loved it. Everything was very inexpensive, they said, and the place was just lots of fun.

I've only been to Mexico City, which is a great city but probably not where you're wanting to go for this trip. It's deep inside Mexico, up in the mountains, far from beaches, and very crowded! But a really cool city, for sure!

We've been to Tiajuana a couple of times, but I understand that Tiajuana is not really representative of what Mexico really is. We sure enjoyed it though, brought back some nice souveniers too.

If I were you, I would pick a lovely beach-side location (sorry, don't know any.)

Oof. Tijuana is fun for shopping, but I wouldn't go there for a vacation. Especially if you are looking for the "real Mexico". It's rather dirty and smelly.

Cabo is very lovely...Rosarita is supposed to be fun and it's not too far in, plus it's 'beachy'...I would LOVE to go to the Yucatan Peninsula, but I think it's a bit farther 'down country' than you had planned to travel (you're in California, right?). My parents just went to San Felipe not too long ago (they live in San Diego, and they drove there for the weekend, so it can't be too far) and they had a LOT of fun.

Depends on what you are looking for in a vacation, I guess. Ruins? Food? Shopping? Historical buildings? Beaches?

What are you looking to do? According to the brochures I have read, Cancun is great for partying if you want to do that, but it seemed to lack opportunities for cultural enrichment.

As long as you are going, if anyone you are with happens to need dental work... [Wink]

Ah, see.... here is your problem. Mexico is unbelievably awesome; unfortunately, neither Americanish tourist towns (Cancun, PV, Acapulco) or border towns are very representative of what Mexico really is. The best places are down south. Villahermosa, Oaxaca, the interior of the Yucatan. Go the extra distance; it's worth it. 2nd class Mexican buses are a cheap way to get there, just don't tell your mom. [Smile] Have fun! My friend and I are currently cooking up a way to go to Mexico for a month this summer... mwa ha ha ha!

Dunno about final destination. But you will be stopping in Los Angeles along the way.

RIGHT?! *looks threatening*

Um, we're coming from Ohio and Washington D.C. California is not really on our way. ;-)

First of all, WRONG ANSWER! [No No]

Secondly, sure it is. At least, if you're heading to Tijuana or other places in Baja California.

Hmm... how about Monterrey? It's not too far south and it's the third largest city. I haven't been there, so I can't tell you how what it's like from experience, but I've heard good things.

If you're willing to go farther south, then I'd suggest some of the silver cities in north-central Mexico. Zacatecas is the farthest north and is absolutely gorgeous. There's also an abandoned mining town, Real de Catorce that's supposed to be spectacular.
