All, my life, I have believed this to be completely and utterly true. And now it is revealed as wrong.

[Confused]

I've known this for years. At least since i was in middle school.

The fact that china is only admitting this now, i guess is news though...

"Having this falsehood printed in our elementary school textbooks is probably the main cause of the misconception being so widely spread," the paper said.
Ya think? [Razz]

Why does the Chinese astronaut's spacesuit look so much like an American spacesuit. Is there only one way to build a spacesuit, and Americans happened to come up with it first?

Don't think of it as your world crumbling.

Think of it as no longer being walled in.

Think of it as a "not so great" revelation.

Fortunately, the Yangtze dam project really IS visible from space, so face was saved.

I was completely unaware that anyone believed that. [Blushing]

Am I really the only person who every believed this? Now I really feel bad. *sigh*

I believed it at one point, but now I am enlightened and don't really care either way.

In the beginning of "The Truman Show" they say their (pretend) studio is, along with the great wall of China, one of two man made structures visible from space.

I just feel, grossly misinformed. Supposedly they've been teaching this in text books, yet I didn't know about it, until now.
I geusse the cariculum(I don't know how to spell that) in my school was either, misinformed also. Or they knew the truth, and didn't want to fill our little brains with garbage.

My understanding has been that along with the great wall, you can see Utah's big strip mine.

Also, I've heard that before they were asked to turn down their spotlight, you could see the Luxor hotel in Vegas from space.

Why do you think the UFO's come to Earth?

They saw the Great Wall and mistook it for a landing strip.

It's definitely listed as visible from space in an answer in the original Trivial Pursuit game. That's where I learned it from.

Basically, when a piece of knowledge has zero chance of ever affecting the way I live my life, I don't spend a lot of effort confirming or denying it. [Smile]

From a low orbit of the earth, many artificial objects are visible on the earth, such as highways, ships in the sea, railroads, cities, fields of crops, and even some individual buildings. While at a low orbit, the Great Wall of China can be seen from space but it is not unique in that regard.

Furthermore, when leaving the earth's orbit and acquiring an altitude of more than a few thousand miles, no man-made objects are visible at all. NASA says, "The Great Wall can barely be seen from the Shuttle, so it would not be possible to see it from the Moon with the naked eye."
