which will give you the best exercise riding a certain distance or for a certain amount of time?

Posted by Miro (Member # 1178) on :

Well, if you run for twenty minutes one day and cover two miles, and the next day run two miles in twenty minutes, I'd say they're about the same.

Um, what are we talking about riding, here?

Posted by knightswhosayni! (Member # 4096) on :

Riding a horse, I would say a working trot, no stirrups, and posting for as long as your legs will make it. THe horse moves you too much in the canter, and not enough in the walk.

And now that I'm sure you were talking about biking, I'll shut up.

ok, but WHY are there no horsey people on hatrack? I don't get it.

You had my hopes up, there. How dare you.

When using equally good form, you burn the same amount of calories whether you ride/swim/run 10 miles in 1/2 hour or 5 hours. (It gets nonlinear at biking's higher speeds because so much of it becomes combatting drag, but the principle is sound.) Faster times provide better cardiovascular training.

*Points to double entendre in thread title*

So what would be a good time/distance for someone just starting to bike for exercise?

Posted by Wonko The Sane (Member # 2945) on :

Don't you just love double entendres? [Big Grin]

I'd say 20 minutes. Don't push yourself hard either, just ride at a comfortable pace, it's harder than you think it is. [Wink]

<Exempts thread from Out-of-context snippets. Too intentional.>

I totally didn't mean that post in any way that would make the out of context thread. And now that I re-read it again with Papa Moose's comment in mind I don't see how I could make it more appropriate for the OOC thread. [Embarrassed]

Depends on what you want to do with your run. If you are trying to burn fat the best is around 30-45 minutes. Right around 45 minutes you start burning muscle and you don't start to burn serious fat until you hit about 30 minutes of an elevated heart rate. Also its bad to run too slow as in my opinion it destroys your knees. The best long distances to do is around 4 miles. Just start running a mile then two then three. Just don't push yourself too hard as your muscles and lungs will develop faster than your bones. After an eight mile run or so its always my joints that hurt more than my muscles.

Well biking is a lot easier on your joints than running. But I stand by the 20 minutes. Watch out, it's very easy to overdo it in the first few minutes, and then you'll be surprised at the length of those remaing minutes.

See? This thread makes it too simple. Thank you for the examples, Black Fox. Edit -- and for yet another, Hobbes.

Is my thread the first to have this honor?
